The concept of burning coal that has been pulverized into a fine powder stems from the belief that if the coal is made fine enough, it will burn almost as easily and efficiently as a gas. The feeding rate of coal according to the boiler demand and the amount of air available for drying and transporting the pulverized coal fuel is controlled by computers. Pieces of coal are crushed between balls or cylindrical rollers that move between two tracks or "races." The raw coal is then fed into the pulverizer along with air heated to about 650°F / 340°C from the boiler.

As the coal gets crushed by the rolling action, the hot air dries it and blows the usable fine coal powder out to be used as fuel. The powdered coal from the pulverizer is directly blown to a burner in the boiler. It was not until 1994 when Matrise took over that the band got serious and started to take off. The band refined their style and released their second demo Skin The Living in 1995, which is the year Matrise acknowledges the band began. After their first two demos, the band was signed to the American independent label Pure Death Records, owned at the time by Jamey Jasta of Hatebreed, where they released their first album, a repackaging of their second demo Skin the Living, in 1996. In late 1997, their second album, Slaughter the Weak was released on independent label Pulverizer Records. The EP Darkness Foretold was released in 1998 by the small label S.O.D. Records, which was spearheaded by the creator of the underground music magazine Sounds of Death, and featured covers of Slayer's "Fight Til Death" and Carnivore's "Jesus Hitler".

Hāshim ibn ‘Abd Manāf (; ), born ‘Amr al-ʿUlā (), was the great-grandfather of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the progenitor of the ruling Banu Hashim clan of the Quraysh tribe in Mecca. At some point in his life before his father's death, ‘Amr chose for himself the name Hāshim, as it was the name God used for Abraham (‘Amr was a Hanif, follower of the "religion of Abraham"). The narrations from Islamic hagiographists to explain this name change are varied: A narration suggests that `Amr was called Hashim because Hashim translates as pulverizer in Arabic-- As a generous man, he initiated the practice of providing crumbled bread in broth that was later adapted for the pilgrims to the Ka'aba in Mecca. In January 1877, Mr. Dunn secured employment in the first stamp mill erected and placed in operation in the Black Hills, the same being owned by M. E. The plant's final years under Horsehead were marked by several major accidents, including the failure of both units' main turbine-generator bearings during a loss of auxiliary power, the explosion of one of the plant's two 138,000 volt substations, the rupture of a high pressure auxiliary steam line, several coal pulverizer explosions, and a large electrical explosion resulting from a no-load electrical disconnect mistakenly being opened under full load. Generating capacity of the plant had been reduced to approximately 50% by 2011, due to the company's lack of funding for routine plant outages and maintenance, as well as the low energy content, high moisture coal which had been used at the facility since 2010. On June 30, 2011, Horsehead announced that operations at the George F. Weaton station would be idled indefinitely, citing the rising costs of producing power at the facility and a new deal to purchase power for its zinc smelting operation from FirstEnergy. Unit 1 and Unit 2 were shut down on September 10, 2011 and September 11, 2011 respectively, and most of the hourly workforce was laid off or transferred on September 14, 2011.
