The "War of the Romantics" is a term used by some music historians to describe the schism among prominent musicians in the second half of the 19th century. Musical structure, the limits of chromatic harmony, and program music versus absolute music were the principal areas of contention. The opposing parties crystallized during the 1850s. The first free skating of the competition was the men's free skating. The highly competitive segment of the competition saw as many as twelve of the skaters attempting or executing quadruple jumps. MUSIC, the first computer music program, was developed on the IBM 704 by Max Mathews. In 1962 physicist John Larry Kelly, Jr created one of the most famous moments in the history of Bell Labs by using an IBM 704 computer to synthesize speech. Kelly's voice recorder synthesizer vocoder recreated the song Daisy Bell, with musical accompaniment from Max Mathews.

Symphony No. 2 De fire Temperamenter, "The Four Temperaments", Op. 16, FS 29 is the second symphony by Danish composer Carl Nielsen, written in 1901–1902 and dedicated to Ferruccio Busoni. It was first performed on 1 December 1902 for the Danish Concert Association, with Nielsen himself conducting. As indicated in the subtitle, each of its four movements is a musical sketch of a humor of the four temperaments: choleric, phlegmatic, melancholic, and sanguine. Despite its apparent concept of program music, the work is a fully integrated symphony in traditional symphonic structure.

Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons) of 1723 is his most famous work. Part of Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione ("The Contest between Harmony and Invention"), it depicts moods and scenes from each of the four seasons. The "New Germans" thus were regarded as representatives of a misplaced traditionalism. Strauss’s Tone Poems, such as Also sprach Zarathustra, ten years earlier still regarded as avant-garde music, were now viewed as works of times of yore. His Sinfonia Domestica was old-fashioned and even scraping the borders of program music, which was no longer acceptable. His Elektra, premiered in 1909 and at that time attacked as ultra progressive, was old hat.

In 1982, CJOM and CKWW were acquired by Geoff Stirling's company, Stirling Communications International, which also owned CKGM radio in Montreal and CHOZ-FM in St. John's, Newfoundland. CJOM-FM made an abrupt switch to a CHR/Top 40 format. In the late 1980s, the station went by the moniker "Laser Rock," a reference to becoming one of the first radio stations in the Detroit area to program music solely from compact discs. CJOM ran afoul of the CRTC in the summer of 1983 for its format change to contemporary hits.

His first competition of the season was the 2019 CS Autumn Classic International, where he won the bronze medal with third place finishes in both segments. Messing held the Japanese flag in aid of the event's winner, Yuzuru Hanyu, during the medal ceremony, and was praised in the media for an example of good sportsmanship. The Mephisto Polka (S. 217) is a piece of program music written in folk-dance style for solo piano by Franz Liszt in 1882–83. The work's program is the same as that of the same composer's four Mephisto Waltzes, written respectively in 1859–60, 1880–81, 1882 and 1885 and based on the legend of Faust, not by Goethe but by Nikolaus Lenau (1802–50). According to YouTube, the M/V of "Glass Bead" ranked number nine in top ten "Most Viewed K-Pop Videos Around the World in January 2015". Music in High Places is a live album by the San Diego-based rock band Unwritten Law, released in 2003 by Earth Escapes. It was recorded live for the VH1 program Music in High Places and features the band performing acoustic renditions of their songs in various natural settings in Yellowstone National Park (with the exception of "Shallow," which was recorded acoustically in the studio). The version of "Rest of My Life" from this recording was released as a music video and reached #16 on US modern rock charts. The album peaked at #134 on the Billboard 200.

Coleman ultimately recovered sufficiently to resume his touring and recording activities, and remained an active member of Ween until their dissolution in May 2012, and has performed with Ween since their reunion in February 2016. In the late 80s, Kikuchi tried to shed the "idol" label and formed RA-MU a band featuring more original material and rock music, but the band failed to be recognised. Unwilling to return to perform as an idol singing mainstream bubblegum pop, Kikuchi shifted her focus to acting from there on, and has been successful as an actress. In 2011, Japanese music program Music Station held a special report counting down the Top 50 Idols of All-Time based on their singles' total sales. The list spans several decades, and Kikuchi was in the 42nd place, with a sales record of 4,110,000 copies.

Malipiero was strongly critical of sonata form and, in general, of standard thematic development in composition. He declared: Malipiero's musical language is characterized by an extreme formal freedom; he always renounced the academic discipline of variation, preferring the more anarchic expression of song, and he avoided falling into program music descriptivism. Until the first half of the 1950s, Malipiero remained tied to diatonism, maintaining a connection with the pre-19th-century Italian instrumental music and Gregorian chant, moving then slowly to increasingly eerie and tense territories that put him closer to total chromaticism. He did not abandon his previous style but he reinvented it.

Musicologist John Warrack suggests that, of all Tchaikovsky's major neglected works, Manfred may be the one which least deserves this fate. While Tchaikovsky had his doubts about program music, he was actually better able to handle large forms when there was the impulse of an emotional idea behind the music. He apparently felt such an impulse—if not from Byron's poem, then from the program Balakirev gave him—and that impulse brought forth a work of great originality and power. While he did not follow Berlioz in how he might have handled the program, Tchaikovsky did make use of an idée fixe recurring in all four movements.

He was born in San Juan Hill, Manhattan in New York City, to parents from St. Kitts and Trinidad, and grew up in Harlem. During much of his career, he took work as a Dixieland musician while working on the more adventurous kind of jazz he preferred. Each show opens with the Kyle O'Door composition "The Clockwork Cabaret" as the theme song, which was written specifically for the program. Music is the main focus of the program; the show is a significant outlet for music of many genres, especially steampunk music, folk and dark cabaret. There have been several notable guests and interviews on the program - Eli August, Curtis Eller, Jay Cartwright of Lemming Malloy, Melora Creager of Rasputina, Dexter Romweber & the New Romans, Andrew Benjamin of The Hellblinki Sextet and The Slow Poisoner. On May 9, 2008, Yesung was sent to the hospital after he injured his leg during the 70 km 24-Hour Marathon of Hope in which he and bandmates Shindong, Sungmin, Leeteuk, Eunhyuk and Kangin participated. The event was in collaboration with the SBS charity program "Hope TV 24" and the money raised was donated to a Mongolian school in South Korea which was at risk of closing down. Due to the injury, Yesung was unable to complete the marathon, but appeared on stage on crutches with his fellow members. On August 8, Yesung was sent to the hospital after falling from a 1.5m stage while rehearsing at the KBS music program, Music Bank.

Strauss wrote on a wide range of subjects, some of which had been previously considered unsuitable to be set to music, including literature, legend, philosophy and autobiography. In doing so, he elevated orchestral technique to a new level of complexity, taking realism in orchestral depiction to unprecedented lengths, widening the expressive functions of program music as well as extending its boundaries. Because of his virtuoso use of orchestration, the descriptive power and vividness of these works is extremely marked. He usually employs a large orchestra, often with extra instruments, and he often uses instrumental effects for sharp characterization, such as portraying the bleating of sheep with cuivré brass as well as fluttertongued reeds in Don Quixote.

From 1995-2003 she earned her master's degree and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology at Indiana University. Dr. Maxwell taught ethnomusicology at the University of Virginia. She also toured and recorded with jazz drummer Robert Jospé and with her own group Afrika Soul Maxwell interviewing a musical group from Benin on Voice of America In 2011 Heather returned to Mali as a Fulbright Scholar for a teaching stint in Bamako at the National Conservatory of Music. The coup d'état on March 22, 2012 cut that short and she returned to the US. Later that year Heather joined the Voice of America in Washington, D.C. as host and producer of the worldwide radio program Music Time in Africa.

These works helped establish the genre of orchestral program music-- compositions written to illustrate an extra-musical plan derived from a play, poem, painting or work of nature. They inspired the symphonic poems of Bedřich Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, Richard Strauss and others. Liszt's intent, according to musicologist Hugh MacDonald, was for these single-movement works "to display the traditional logic of symphonic thought." In other words, Liszt wanted these works to display a complexity in their interplay of themes similar to that usually reserved for the opening movement of the Classical symphony; this principal self-contained section was normally considered the most important in the larger whole of the symphony in terms of academic achievement and musical architecture.

On November 19, 2010, she performed the song on the Japanese program Music Station. "Mine" is the second song on the set for the Speak Now World Tour. "Thanks in large part to Nadezhda von Meck", Wiley writes, "he became the first full-time professional Russian composer". This, Wiley adds, allowed him the time and freedom to consolidate the Western compositional practices he had learned at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Russian folk song and other native musical elements to fulfill his own expressive goals and forge an original, deeply personal style. He made an impact in not only absolute works such as the symphony but also program music and, as Wiley phrases it, "transformed Liszt's and Berlioz's achievements ... into matters of Shakespearean elevation and psychological import".

The choir is one of the most famous choirs in the world. It first performed for a U.S. President in 1911, and has performed at the inaugurations of presidents Lyndon B. Johnson (1965), Richard Nixon (1971), Ronald Reagan (1981), George H. W. Bush (1989), George W. Bush (2001), and Donald Trump (2017). The choir's weekly devotional program, Music & the Spoken Word, is one of the longest-running radio programs in the world, and has aired every week since July 15, 1929.

A part of the School of Contemporary Media, Fanshawe's Music Industry Arts (MIA) program was founded as Creative Electronics in 1973 by British disc jockey Tom Lodge formerly of Radio Caroline. With six professors and 35 students in its inaugural year, courses in the three-year program centered on electronics and music synthesizers. When the college demanded that Creative Electronics become a career program, he had the students build a recording studio, gathered music industry executives for an advisory group and in 1975 renamed the program Music Industry Arts (MIA). Along with the change in name, course offerings were expanded to include music recording and engineering, music production, artist development, live performance, music writing and audio post-production.

The sights and sounds of the new American frontier inspired some of the most original, if not strange, program music of the nineteenth century. A theme from the 15th Century Hussite song "Ye Warriors of God and his Law" is laced into the music, one symbolic of resistance and hope - the theme is common enough that any Czech would know the melody and its significance. [The same theme appears (with the same significance) in Smetana's "Má Vlast" cycle, in both the Blaník and Tabor movements, as well as in Josef Suk's symphonic Poem Praga.] The sound of bells are heard throughout the music, as Prague is also known as "City of a Hundred Spires".

Insights gained from these associations were significant in that much of what Excell would later publish targeted Sunday school and youth program music needs. The Methodist Episcopal church of Excell's day was still divided into northern and southern denominations created by an antebellum split. Excell and Vincent were affiliated with the northern branch known as the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1885 he met Sam P. Sept haï-kaïs (, "Seven haikais") is a song cycle of mélodies by the French composer Maurice Delage for soprano and chamber ensemble of flute, oboe, B♭ clarinet, piano, and string quartet. Delage composed the work in 1924 based on classical Japanese tanka and haiku poems he translated into French. The work was first performed on 16 February 1925 by the mezzo-soprano Jane Bathori at a concert conducted by Darius Milhaud at the Société musicale indépendante (SMI). The SMI was a concert society founded in 1909 by Maurice Ravel and others friends of Delage's to free themselves of the restrictions of the program music of the Société Nationale de Musique (SNM).

This kind of program music or sound painting of scenarios such as love scenes, tempests, or battles complete with cannonades and the cries of the wounded, conveyed by a lone violin, was by that time nearly forgotten. Saint-Georges must have had fun inventing it as he went along. Louise places his improvisational style on a par with her subsequent musical idol, Hector Berlioz: "We did not know then this expressive ...depiction a dramatic scene, which Mr. Berlioz later revealed to us... making us feel an emotion that identifies us with the subject." Curiously, some of Saint-Georges's biographers are still looking for its score, but Louise's account leaves no doubt that it belonged to the lost art of spontaneous improvisation.

In the philosophy of music, scholars have argued whether instrumental music such as symphonies are simply abstract arrangements and patterns of musical pitches ("absolute music"), or whether instrumental music depicts emotional tableaux and moods ("program music"). Despite the assertions of philosophers advocating the "absolute music" argument, the typical symphony-goer does interpret the notes and chords of the orchestra emotionally; the opening of a Romantic-era symphony, in which minor chords thunder over low bass notes is often interpreted by layman listeners as an expression of sadness in music. Also called "abstract music", absolute music is music that is not explicitly "about" anything, non-representational or non- objective. Absolute music has no references to stories or images or any other kind of extramusical idea.

The Visual Effects Society Award for Outstanding Animated Character in an Episode or Real-Time Project is one of the annual awards given by the Visual Effects Society, starting from 2002. Since its inception, the award's title has gone through several title changes, and one major category shift. First awarded in 2002, the award was titled "Best Character Animation in a Live Action Televised Program, Music Video or Commercial" and given to the best character animation in a televised program, with no specific character cited. This would change in 2004, when the category was re-titled "Outstanding Performance by an Animated Character in a Live Action Broadcast Program", and given to visual effects artists for work on a specified character.

Schumann's fusion of literary ideas with musical ones—known as program music—may have first taken shape in Papillons, Op. 2 (Butterflies), a musical portrayal of events in Jean Paul's novel Flegeljahre. In a letter from Leipzig dated April 1832, Schumann bids his brothers, "Read the last scene in Jean Paul's Flegeljahre as soon as possible, because the Papillons are intended as a musical representation of that masquerade." This inspiration is foreshadowed to some extent in his first written criticism—an 1831 essay on Frédéric Chopin's variations on a theme from Mozart's Don Giovanni, published in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung. In it, Schumann creates imaginary characters who discuss Chopin's work: Florestan (the embodiment of Schumann's passionate, voluble side) and Eusebius (his dreamy, introspective side)—the counterparts of Vult and Walt in Flegeljahre.

The music was commissioned by the Admiral Danish Fleet (Royal Danish Navy Operational Command) for the 200th anniversary of the battle in 2001. The Hope also commemorates Olfert Fischer (Commander of the Danish fleet in 1801) who lies buried in the Reformed Church, Copenhagen, where the first performance of the work took place on April 1, 2001, with the Royal Danish Navy Band, the choir of the Reformed church, and Frederik Magle himself on organ. The Hope is not pure program music, but includes highly visual elements in the description of the battle. The percussion is placed both in front and behind the audience, creating a special effect when the bass drum, sounding from behind the audience, is answered by cymbals in front - and the other way round - backwards and forwards above the audience, »as if cannon balls are flying over their heads«.

Classical music host Peter Greenquist's "Morning Show" of classical music and news is much of the heart of the Ann Arbor community, and sportscaster Tom Hemmingway could be heard across the city on football Saturdays, often telling stories about the history of the game that only such local "townies" would be able to remember. In the 1980s, the station added a nationally syndicated New Age music program, Music from the Hearts of Space, as well as an hour of more eclectic music before the midnight sign-off, featuring the University of Michigan Men's Glee Club. WUOM's popularity gradually decreased from the height of the 1960s, though it still retained enough prestige to become a charter member of NPR in 1971. It was one of the approximately 90 stations that aired the inaugural broadcast of All Things Considered.

Excerpt from the beginning of the Mephisto Waltz No. 1 Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is the best-known of the series and, together with No. 3, the most praised musically. Mephisto Waltz No. 1, Der Tanz in der Dorfschenke (The Dance in the Village Inn) is the second of two short works he wrote for orchestra. While the work preceding it, "Midnight Procession" ("Der nächtliche Zug"), is rarely given (though both works have been recorded together), the waltz has been a concert favorite, with its passion, sensuality and dramatics generating an emotional impact. James Huneker described the work's "langourous syncopated melody" as "one of the most voluptuous episodes outside of the Tristan score". The Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is a typical example of program music, taking for its program an episode from Nikolaus Lenau's 1836 verse drama (not from Goethe's Faust).

There is some debate as to whether the four concertos were written to accompany four sonnets or vice versa. Though it is not known who wrote the accompanying sonnets, the theory that Vivaldi wrote them is supported by the fact that each sonnet is broken into three sections, each neatly corresponding to a movement in the concerto. Regardless of the sonnets' authorship, The Four Seasons can be classified as program music, instrumental music intended to evoke something extra-musical, and an art form which Vivaldi was determined to prove sophisticated enough to be taken seriously. In addition to these sonnets, Vivaldi provided instructions such as "The barking dog" (in the second movement of "Spring"), "Languor caused by the heat" (in the first movement of "Summer"), and "the drunkards have fallen asleep" (in the second movement of "Autumn").

Milošević was the Dean of the Faculty of Music from 1960-67. His overall engagement in the music life of Belgrade and Serbia was also fulfilled by his position of the Head of the Radio Belgrade Second Program music section (1950–51), director and conductor of the Serbian National Theatre in Novi Sad (1955–57), and President of the Association of Music Artists of Serbia (1951–53) and Composers’ Association of Serbia (1958–60). Milošević was also active as a music writer (in journals The Sound (Zvuk) and The Music herald (Muzički glasnik in Serbian)) and as a translator – with Mihailo Vukdragović he co-translated K B. Jirak's The Study of musical forms, as well as numerous opera and operetta librettos and songs. Predrag Milošević is recipient of the Yugoslav Order of Labour with the Red Flag, and a music school in his birth town, Knjaževac is named after him.

This reflects the distinction that Bruegel creates between foreground (time passing) and background (time permanent). The first type of documentation of this composition can be found in a sketchbook titled Modual Book, The Triumph of Time, dated 2 April, 1970, where the composer included several ideas that were related to An Imaginary Landscape, Prologue and a preliminary abandoned version of The Triumph of Time, all composed between 1970 and 1971. Unlike most pieces that are contemporary to the Triumph, this is a fine example (and one of the few ones) of program music in the 70s. Even though The Triumph of Time was created as a standalone composition, Birtwistle said on one occasion that this work, Earth Dances and Deep Time could be viewed as a triptych, even though they were not initially planned as such and the composer never made such a connection present in his work.

A group of five musicians performed eight of his songs, interspersed with performances by Ito and discussions about his music between himself and Masahiro Sakurai. The event began as a concert due to Ito's wish to host one based on his music, but after the space the organizing company, Harmonics International, rented turned out to be run by a high school classmate of Ito, at the classmate's insistence the discussions of Ito's music were added to the program. Music from the original soundtracks of Dawn of Mana and Sword of Mana has been arranged for the piano and published by DOREMI Music Publishing. Two compilation books of music from the series as a whole have also been published as Seiken Densetsu Best Collection Piano Solo Sheet Music first and second editions, with the first edition including tracks by Ito from Final Fantasy Adventure while the second added tracks he composed from Dawn of Mana.

A friend is claimed to have given Bernstein the idea to write music based on The Age of Anxiety in a letter: ::What do you think of the 'Anxiety' idea? There is so much musical- subtlety in it, and those various metres brought about by the different roads the couples take and their differing means of transportation, to say nothing of the moods, and the separateness that becomes Oneness under alcohol and/or libidinal urges. You mentioned it being good ballet material, yes, but I think, first, it should be composed as music by itself and therefore protect it from being too obvious program music, and then if some clever choreographer can put the musical composition to work, with what added quality good music may give to the themes and material, well and good. I would rather have 'it' in the concert hall, where it can be less 'handled' than in the ballet school where many different talents brush it up.

The inspiration for the concertos is not the countryside around Mantua, as initially supposed, where Vivaldi was living at the time, since according to Karl Heller they could have been written as early as 1716–1717, while Vivaldi was engaged with the court of Mantua only in 1718. They were a revolution in musical conception: in them Vivaldi represented flowing creeks, singing birds (of different species, each specifically characterized), a shepherd and his barking dog, buzzing flies, storms, drunken dancers, hunting parties from both the hunters' and the prey's point of view, frozen landscapes, and warm winter fires. Unusually for the period, Vivaldi published the concerti with accompanying sonnets (possibly written by the composer himself) that elucidated what it was in the spirit of each season that his music was intended to evoke. The concerti therefore stand as one of the earliest and most detailed examples of what would come to be called program music—i.e.

The series made Bruno Gerussi a highly visible star on Canadian TV, and between 1975 and 1984 he hosted a second series, Celebrity Cooks which aired initially on the CBC and later the rival Global network. The series' title was shortened to Beachcombers in 1988 (with the CBC announcing that the intent was to give the aging show a new look), coinciding with the replacement of the show's original theme music with a new composition. Subsequent funding cutbacks at the government-supported CBC, however, led to Beachcombers being cancelled even though it was still popular in its homeland and syndicated around the world, though attempts to revamp the series by giving it more suspenseful storylines and making it more action-oriented met with fan criticism. Tennell during her short program at the 2019 Grand Prix final Tennell worked with Alexei Mishin in Courchevel in the French Alps during the summer of 2019; she worked on her choreography, body movements, gestures, and artistry, which according to figure skating reporter Jean-Christophe Berlot, "deeply modified her style on the ice" throughout the season, especially her two appearances during the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix final. She also worked on including a triple Axel into her routines, which was ready at the beginning of the season, but a stress fracture in her foot in July 2019 prevented her from using it. Benoit Richaud, who choreographed her programs again for the 2019–2020 season predicted that Tennell would be proficient in the jump by the following season and the 2022 Olympics. Tennell's short program music included "a fast-paced medley of [Russian musician] Kirrill Richter’s staccato piano compositions", which demonstrated a lighter, more "fun-loving" side of her personality.

Hanyu and fellow Japanese figure skater Shoma Uno at the 2017 World Championships In the 2016–17 season, Hanyu succeeded in being the first skater in history to land a quadruple loop, defending his Grand Prix Final title, and recapturing his World title while breaking the world record for the free skating score. For the 2016–17 Grand Prix, Hanyu's assignments were Skate Canada International and NHK Trophy. His short program music was "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince and the free skating music was from "Asian Dream Song" & "View of Silence" by Joe Hisaishi, while the program's title (given by Hanyu) was "Hope and Legacy". Hanyu competed at the Autumn Classic International, where he won the gold medal and became the first skater in history to successfully land a quadruple Loop in competition. At the 2016 Skate Canada International, he placed fourth in the short program, after landing his first jump on one knee, nearly putting his hand on the ice on the second and failing to perform a jump combination.

KCON 2015 in Los Angeles Red Velvet made their official debut stage on August 1, 2014 on the program Music Bank. Their debut single, "Happiness", was released digitally on August 4. The song, an urban Europop song with "strong synth sound" and "African tribal beat", was penned by Yoo Young-jin and composed by Will Simms, Chad Hugo (The Neptunes), Chris Holsten, and Anne Judith Wik (Dsign Music). The original music video for "Happiness" gained more than 2 million views on YouTube in its first 24 hours of release before being removed due to controversy over problematic background images and replaced with an edited version. "Happiness" was the second-most viewed K-pop music video worldwide for the month of August in 2014. Red Velvet became the first K-pop girl group to chart their debut single to the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, where it peaked at number 4. The group released their second digital single "Be Natural" on October 13, 2014. The song, which includes a rap verse by then-SR14B member Taeyong, was a remake of the 2000 same-name single by S.E.S., SM Entertainment's first girl group.

Without any real formal constraints, this genre usually consists of a single movement, alternating different sections with clearly contrasted characters, sometimes melancholy, sometimes turbulent, but always of a basically lyrical nature (even sentimental at times). Combining aesthetic considerations and virtuosity, Ysaÿe's poems become a special place for the evocation of different images and emotions, without ever turning into program music. Ysaÿe had always been attracted to the 'poem' form and states himself that "it is more receptive to emotion and is not constrained by the restrictions imposed by the hallowed form of the concerto; it can be dramatic and lyrical; it is essentially romantic and impressionistic..." He continues by explaining that "(the poem) weeps and sings, it is shadow and light and has a changing prism; it is free and needs only its title to guide the composer and make him paint feelings, images, abstractions without a literary canvas; in a word, it is a picture painted without a model." To Ysaÿe, the poem is a progression in his musical writing and an experiment to associate musical interest with that of true and great virtuosity, which he felt had been neglected by instrumental players.

Igor Stravinsky, one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century Neoclassicism in music was a twentieth-century trend, particularly current in the interwar period, in which composers sought to return to aesthetic precepts associated with the broadly defined concept of "classicism", namely order, balance, clarity, economy, and emotional restraint. As such, neoclassicism was a reaction against the unrestrained emotionalism and perceived formlessness of late Romanticism, as well as a "call to order" after the experimental ferment of the first two decades of the twentieth century. The neoclassical impulse found its expression in such features as the use of pared-down performing forces, an emphasis on rhythm and on contrapuntal texture, an updated or expanded tonal harmony, and a concentration on absolute music as opposed to Romantic program music. In form and thematic technique, neoclassical music often drew inspiration from music of the 18th century, though the inspiring canon belonged as frequently to the Baroque and even earlier periods as to the Classical period—for this reason, music which draws inspiration specifically from the Baroque is sometimes termed neo-Baroque music.
