Maybe it doesn't matter much when that same room contains the kitschy spectacles of Thomas Kinkade alongside Beatrix Potter drawings and Henry Moore's monumental "Reclining Figure: Bunched" (1973/74) tapestry — complete with a preliminary drawing by Moore himself.

As he was creating the painting, the artist used a complex painting technique, including a preliminary drawing with an undercoat graphite pencil, a few paint coats of various textures and directions, scumble, and overtone, strokes of various shape, thickness, and length, and diverse textured compactions. The painting was made in several stages. The principal outline is made in large strokes of medium thickness. Then finer details are portrayed over the layer slightly touched by fading.

Throughout 1929 and 1930 Knight went on a tour of British towns with the combined Bertram Mills and Great Carmo's Circus. Painting within a working circus forced Knight to paint at great speed, as the performers rarely had much time to pose. Knight responded by painting directly onto the canvas without any preliminary drawing. Whilst this led to some of her circus scenes appearing 'flat', her paintings of small groups of clowns, such as The Three Clowns (1930) and Old Time Clowns (1957), were much more successful.

The Doni Tondo was influenced by an early version of Leonardo da Vinci's The Virgin and Child with St. Anne. This is the completed version, painted in 1510. The composition is, most likely, partially influenced by the cartoon (a term referring to a detailed later-stage preliminary drawing) for Leonardo da Vinci’s The Virgin and Child with St. Anne. Michelangelo's Holy Family forms a tight, separated group in the centre foreground of the image, with the Virgin's figure constructing a typical Renaissance pyramid or triangle.

Arikha painted directly from the subject in natural light only, using no preliminary drawing, finishing a painting, pastel, print, ink, or drawing in one session. His profound knowledge of art techniques and masterly draughtsmanship enabled him to abide by this principle of immediacy, partly inspired by Chinese brush painting. It was a principle he shared with his close friend Henri Cartier- Bresson, to whose "instant décisif" it was analogous. He never drew from memory or photographs, aiming to depict the truth of what lay before his eyes at that moment.

Bacchus and Ariadne (1522–1523) is an oil painting by Titian. It is one of a cycle of paintings on mythological subjects produced for Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, for the Camerino d'Alabastro – a private room in his palazzo in Ferrara decorated with paintings based on classical texts. An advance payment was given to Raphael, who originally held the commission for the subject of a Triumph of Bacchus. At the time of Raphael's death in 1520, only a preliminary drawing was completed and the commission was then handed to Titian.

Hind-head Hill c1808. Between 1807 and 1809 the painter Turner created a collection of 71 Mezzotints under the title Liber Studiorum. These were published in 1811. In 1936, when the university was still located at South Main Baptist Church, Houston philanthropists Julius Settegast and Ben Taub donated conjoining pieces of land totaling 110 acres (45 hectares) to the university. This land was to be used as a permanent campus for the University of Houston. Although land had been donated to the university, it was not until two years later that the university was able to build on the location.

Vasquez was born on September 1, 1974, in San Jose, California. He grew up in East San Jose and attended Mt. Pleasant High School, where he often spent much of his class time drawing in sketchbooks and took part in a contest to design a new look for his school's mascot. He earned no prizes, but on the back of a preliminary drawing for the contest, he drew his first sketch of the character who would later become Johnny C. His high school's student newspaper published a number of his comic strips featuring this character, titled Johnny the Little Homicidal Maniac. He also created Happy Noodle Boy while attending Mt. Pleasant.

Horsley's paintings were largely of historical subjects set in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, influenced by the Dutch masters Pieter de Hooch and Vermeer. Examples are "Malvolio", "L'Allegro and il Penseroso" (painted for the Prince Consort), "Le Jour des Morts" and "A Scene from Don Quixote". As a young artist Horsley was patronised buy the collector John Sheepshanks, who bought two of Horsley's paintings: ''The Rival Performers (1839), and ''Youth and Age (1839); both of which are now part of the V&A; collection. In 1843 his cartoon (preliminary drawing) of "St Augustine Preaching" won a prize in the competition to provide interior decorations for Palace of Westminster.

Their friendship and shared aesthetics gave rise, in the 1870s, to a revolutionary style in the visual arts, known as Scapigliatura, a movement rightly considered the first Italian avant-garde in the visual art. In fact Ranzoni is the inventor of the technique through which shape delineation is replaced by a building of forms through nuances of colors. Vibrant splashes of color are applied directly on the canvas, without preliminary drawing, in a cursory brushwork that emphasizes tonal nuances, and suggests volumes and contrasts of light. The revolutionary manner initiated by Ranzoni and Cremona in the 1870s is similar to what the Impressionist group achieved in Paris in the same decade.

The palace building where the ball takes place has been identified by one scholar as the Neuveste at the north-east corner of the Munich Residenz, later replaced by the existing mainly Baroque buildings. Harriet Shorr is mainly considered as a realist artist, however during life her work has transitioned from observation of everyday objects and domestic items painted when she was at Swarthmore, to the objects placed on scarves that she painted after she came to New York, and to objects that are carefully chosen for literary, mythological, or metaphorical possibilities. While selecting objects for the painting Shorr consciously tried not to look for them with a specific agenda in mind, nor questioned what makes them click together. When all the objects were gathered, she arranged the items on a table in her studio trying to vary the spaces between them. Shorr didn’t believe in a necessary connection between drawing and painting and did no preliminary drawing for her still life works.
