According to the chronicler Al Wazir Al Sarraj, Mohamed Bey El Mouradi ordered the construction of the souk in 1691-1692, following the great push that Moorish migrant artisans gave to chachia production and trading at the beginning of the 17th century. The chachia artisans, called chaouachis, were mainly of Andalusian origins, and initiated from the start one of the most important artisan guilds in the country. Shahrazuri is credited with establishing the Khalidi, a new branch of the Naqshbandi order. Much of his significance lies in his giving renewed emphasis to traditional tenets and practices of the Naqshbandi, notably adherence to the sharia and sunnah and avoidance of vocal dhikr in preference of silent performance. This unique form of embroidery utilizes a wide variety of stitching techniques such as cross-stitch, chain- stitch, running-stitch, and satin-stitch and often features applique, reverse- applique, and batik elements in the design. Aesthetically, traditional Paj Ntaub is composed of highly stylized, non-representational geometric motifs that are developed both collectively and individually and vary according to region and tribe. These designs are often used to decorate traditional Hmong clothing including skirts, head dresses, shirt collars, and sashes worn by both men and women and other textiles such as baby carriers, pillows, and funerary textiles.
