The menu, too, was simple — with a twist: The chef Lori Stern piled Astier de Villatte platters high with farmers' market crudités, served with emerald-green herb dip; added touches like fresh lychees and edible dried hibiscus flowers (the national flower of South Korea) to the cheese board; and served trench-coat-shape cookies, hand-painted with cocoa and accented with a dark cacao collar.

Warm platters of sangaak, a large seeded flatbread cooked over pebbles, is eagerly torn apart by guests who use the bread as a vessel to scoop up morsels of kask o' bademjan, a dish of egglplant cooked over almond wood and finished with whey, burnt garlic, and mint; mohst o' mouseer, a thick yogurt with cucumber and za'atar; and a black garbanzo bean purée with tomato marmalade, savory, and Tellicherry peppercorn.

Small and pumpkin-shaped, like miniature bell peppers, they can be found in deli cases stuffed with cubes of provolone and wisps of prosciutto, on antipasto platters at weddings and funerals or suspended in vinegar in big jars at the sub shop, hot and sweet at once, with a zing of sour acidity that makes them an ideal topping for a sandwich of cured meats and salty cheese.

And the steam table is loaded three rows deep, with more platters crowded on top: whole fish bronzed with turmeric, under kinked ribbons of caramelized onions; small curls of shrimp peeking from a dark thicket of spinach; shutki, sun-dried fish hardly the length of a finger, broken down in a pan with eggplant just enough that you can still taste the eggplant's meatiness and feel the crunch of tiny bones.

And now for "27 ways to feel bad about yourself while the last piece of Christmas pudding you've ‘indulged’ in is still making its way through your intestinal tract…" As the new year dawns, you'll notice that without ANY space to breathe whatsoever, what was once a newsfeed saturated with sequins, pints and party platters becomes one bursting at the seams with resistance bands, Nutri Bullets and all manner of "New Year, New You" rhetoric.

But for many in the crowd, happily lining up at the buffet station or waving down waiters as they walked by with platters of pigs-in-a-blanket, the absence of Bruce as a fellow party guest (as well as most of the opening-night notables, including Tina Fey, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Jon Stewart and David Geffen) didn't seem to take away from the thrill of what they had just witnessed on that Broadway stage a few blocks away.

And nowhere more than in New York, where he lived ever after coming to work on the Herald Tribune in 1962, wallowing too in the city of unbridled appetites and ambition, of overbuilt ugliness, shoving oneupmanship…his favourite that party in 1970 at the Park Avenue duplex of Lenny Bernstein, in the days when status required nostalgie de la boue, real revolutionaries at your soirée, hence Black Panthers in leather pieces and wild Afros gobbling tiny morsels of Roquefort rolled in crushed nuts on gadrooned silver platters…Frisson of bomb-throwing danger!!!

I can see from my own 2001 article about Chincoteague that oysters were $6.95 a dozen back then, and I can think about all the platters of Wellfleet oysters we've been consuming this summer at around $2 an oyster (that article also reminds me to give full credit to the battered early paperback edition of "Roadfood" by Jane and Michael Stern which guided us to most of these restaurants, and in fact got us to Chincoteague in the first place, chasing Crab Norfolk, and, of course, those oysters).
