Walking into the park, you're likely to see many expensively dressed dogs and their leavings, trash scattered around the borders, rat traps, towering London planetrees, scattered arborvitae, and what look like winter hazel and roses, among other flora.

In late winter/early spring, with the traffic of Houston Street and the lack of native foliage, it wasn't surprising to find only the frustrated robin and a handful of rock doves sleeping high overhead in the branches of the planetrees.

Originally the central reservation contained three rows of London planetrees flanking a promenade for pedestrians. The central row of trees disappeared when the promenade was replaced by a tram line between 1938 and 1958.

Milecastle 26 (Planetrees) was a milecastle of the Roman Hadrian's Wall. Its position is slightly to the south of, but mostly covered by the B6318 Military Road., and it is located around east of the B6318 Military Road's junction with the A6079. No visible traces exist currently.

Measuring across, Milecastle 26 was a long-axis milecastle with unknown gateway type. Such milecastles were thought to have been constructed by the Legio VI Victrix who were based in Eboracum (York). A causeway over the wall ditch (not necessarily primary) may have existed at the location of the milecastle. The curtain wall is broad at this point, though changes to narrow gauge between here and Turret 26A, at an extant section of the curtain wall known as Planetrees.

The largest specimens were, among others, several English oaks with trunk circonference 390 to 400 cm and 50 giant Scots elm specimens. At this time, many species were growing in the park, including park include: elms, sessile oaks, pyramidal English oaks, ailanthi, horse-chestnuts, sugar maples, maple trees, birches, Siberian peashrubs, purple hazels, purple European beeches, Kentucky coffeetrees, grandiflora hortensias, kerrias, magnolias, American sycamores, peony bushes, black locusts, robinias, snowberry bushes, large-leaved lindens, small-leaved lindens, yews, pines, black pines, Caucasian walnuts, cypresses, London planetrees and other trees and shrubs. During the German occupation, a lot of trees were cut down to build shelters, mainly during 1944.

Finds, however, confirm that people were settling in what is now Nieder-Roden long before the Christian Era. In the Middle Ages, the surrounding woodlands belonged to the Wildbann Dreieich, a royal hunting forest, one of whose 30 Wildhuben (special estates whose owners were charged with guarding the hunting forest) was maintained in Nieder-Roden. Nieder-Roden had another documentary mention in 791 when the Frankish nobleman Erlulf donated all his holdings in Nieder-Roden (rotahen inferiore), Ober-Roden (rotahen superiore) and Bieber to the Lorsch Abbey. In 1346 the village became an independent parish, although in the years that followed it still remained in a certain dependency relationship with its former mother parish of Ober-Roden. Boules and chess under planetrees in Nieder-Roden Formerly an Eppstein holding, the place belonged from 1425 to 1803 to the Archbishopric of Mainz and enjoyed great importance as the centre of a tithing area and the seat of a tithe court.
