Spillers published her critical article, "Interstices: A Small Drama of Words" wherein she critiques Judy Chicago and The Dinner Party, asserting that, as a White woman, Chicago recreates the erasure of the Black feminine sexual self. Spillers calls to her defense the place setting of Sojourner Truth, the only Black woman. While living in Philadelphia after college, Marsh was well-known as a local performance artist, hosting a weekly cabaret at L'Etage produced by Robert Drake of WXPN public radio. Marsh's show, An Evening With Jeffrey Marsh, was one of the founding performances of the Philadelphia Gay & Lesbian Theater Festival. The Philadelphia City Paper described a performance at World Café Live where Marsh "proceeded to move from table to table, flinging people's silverware across the room, rearranging place settings," as "uproarious." "This is Marsh's appeal, crystallized," the review continued.

KPM Rococo-inspired porcelain vase and plinth Among the manufactory's most important clients was Frederick the Great, who sometimes jokingly referred to himself as his “best customer”. From 1765 to his death in 1786, Frederick II placed orders with KPM for porcelain to the value of 200,000 thaler. For his palaces alone, he ordered 21 dinner services, each of them with 36 place settings and up to 500 separate parts, complemented by elaborate table centrepieces. The services’ design and colouring was meticulously created to match the interior decoration of the rooms in which they were to be used.

The Reagan state china service The Reagan state china service was modeled on Woodrow Wilson's china and features the seal of the president of the United States in burnished gold on an ivory background with a border of scarlet. The china was manufactured in the United States by Lenox, and selected by First Lady Nancy Reagan. State dinners had become so large by the Reagan presidency that none of the china could accommodate the number of guests. First Lady Nancy Reagan ordered 4,370 pieces of Lenox china, enough place settings of 19 pieces for 220 people.

In the 1960s, the washing range was introduced with the production of the first Smeg dishwashers, which soon led to a world premiere in 1970: the first 60 cm wide dishwashers with capacity for 14 place settings. Hobs and ovens were then designed and produced from the mid 1970s and, during the 1990s, Smeg completed its product range with the introduction of sinks and hoods after buying Apell, an Italian manufacturer of extractor hoods, sinks and taps based in Ancona. In 1900, Russell built a two-story clapboard house near the Trigg home, and in 1903 built a log cabin studio on an empty lot between the two houses. Durlin Brayton, a graduate of the Chicago Art Institute and self-employed carpenter, bought a kiln and built a small ceramics workshop out of his home in Laguna Beach, California around 1927. Alongside his wife, he produced a small set of dinnerware – place settings, teapots, pitchers and bowls – notable not only for the hand-pressed mold technique used in production, but for the wide range of innovative glaze colors. Brayton’s color palette included rose, strawberry pink, eggplant, jade green, lettuce green, chartreuse, old gold, burnt orange, lemon yellow, silky black, and white. Brayton Laguna is considered to be one of the first California potteries to produce the solid color dinnerware lines later popularized by J.A. Bauer Pottery, Pacific Clay Products and others.
