The Indians finished the year 4th in the AL Central with 65–97 record. Hernández improved dramatically from 2009 and was honored with his 1st All Star selection. He had a 13–14 record with a 3.77 ERA, while striking out 124 batters in 210.1 innings. On February 28, 2011, Indians Manager Manny Acta announced that Hernández had been selected as his starter for Cleveland's season opener against the Chicago White Sox. The April 1 start would be his first on opening day. In front of a sellout crowd of 41,721 fans at Cleveland's ballpark Progressive Field, Hernández started the 2011 season for the Indians. Hernández posted the worst opening day start in Major League history, as he became the first starting pitcher in 60 years to allow 10 runs in a team's first game. Hernández was the losing pitcher as he threw 88 pitches over 3.0 innings, allowed 11 hits, surrendered 2 home runs, walked 1, had 10 earned runs and left the game with an earned run average of 30.00.

Scherzer started on May 11 and struck out 11 Diamondbacks on 99 pitches over seven innings while driving in the deciding run on a ground-rule double in the fourth inning, as the Nationals won, 3–1, for the 11th time in 13 games and moved to 1 games out of first place in the National League East. After suffering a back injury in a game during the previous homestand, first baseman Ryan Zimmerman landed on the 10-day disabled list on May 12 with what the Nationals described as a right oblique strain, retroactive to May 10, as he was held out of several games on the roadtrip. The same day, they called up first baseman Mark Reynolds from Class-AAA Syracuse and moved right-handed pitcher Joaquín Benoit from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Reynolds. Reynolds did not play as the Nationals topped Arizona again on May 12 behind starter Jeremy Hellickson's bid for a perfect game, which he carried into the seventh inning while extending a scoreless streak to 12 innings.

Records show that rugby football was being played in the City of Sheffield as long ago as the early 1860s indeed four Sheffield players represented Yorkshire in the first ever recorded county match against Lancashire in 1869. Officially Sheffield Rugby Union Football Club was founded in 1902 and subsequently found a permanent home at Abbeydale Park, Dore in 1920 where it has three senior pitches. Over the years Sheffield RUFC has enjoyed mixed fortunes, existing as it does, in a city focussed primarily upon soccer, but arguably its most successful seasons were in the late 1970s into the early years of the centennial that heralded the advent of the professional era. During this time the club was proud to be numbered within the vanguard of senior clubs playing at the highest level, initially as a member of the Northern Merit Tables and ultimately the National Leagues. Sheffield RUFC has a tremendous historical record and Corinthian tradition in promoting the sport of rugby union at all levels establishing a thriving youth section following the Second World War and is able to boast one of the first ‘colts’ teams in Yorkshire.

The Cubs then returned Zambrano to the rotation for the second time where he did not give up more than two runs in any start since his return from the bullpen on August 9. Over that time, he allowed only 11 total runs (9 earned) in 50 innings, and pulled his ERA down to 3.75. On August 30, 2010 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Zambrano improved to 3–0 since his return to the pitching rotation, striking out seven. Additionally, he recorded his 21st career home run with a two run shot, increasing his club record for home runs by a pitcher. On September 15 at Busch Stadium, he once again faced Cardinal's ace Chris Carpenter and out-dueled him throwing 104 pitches over six innings giving up just 2 runs (1 earned). He has now won 5 consecutive starts and 6 decisions overall since returning to the rotation. Zambrano pitched for the first time with his mother present against the San Diego Padres at San Diego on Monday, September 27, 2010. He gave up no runs over 7 innings and won the game. His record now sits at 10–6 with a 3.36 ERA.
