Lying approximately northeast of the harbor of St. James on Beaver Island, Pismire Island is a tiny triangle of glacial gravel. It contains almost no permanent vegetation and is best known as a breeding place for Lake Michigan birds. The island was preserved for public use as part of the creation of the Michigan Islands NWR in 1943, and was designated as wilderness in 1970. The word pismire means ant,Entry for pismire.

Pismire Island and Shoe Island are located in the Beaver Island archipelago in far northern Lake Michigan. Pismire Island is located approximately 3.5 miles (5.5 km) northeast of St. James, a harbor on the northern end of Beaver Island, while the secluded Shoe Island is located approximately 14 miles (22.5 km) west of Waugoshance Point.

The headwaters of Tomhicken Creek are inside a deep mine. Tomhicken Creek begins in southwestern Hazle Township, Luzerne County immediately west of an area of strip mines and north of Pismire Ridge. It flows west-southwest, roughly paralleling Pennsylvania Route 924 and shortly leaves Hazle Township and Luzerne County. Upon leaving Luzerne County, the creek enters East Union Township, in Schuylkill County.

The Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge is a designation for eight Michigan islands in the North American Great Lakes. Owned by the United States federal government, they were set aside for ecosystem protection purposes by President Franklin D. Roosevelt 1943. Charity, Little Charity, Scarecrow, and Thunder Bay islands form the Lake Huron division of the refuge. Gull, Hat, Pismire, and Shoe islands, which are part of the Beaver Island archipelago, form the Lake Michigan division.

Lake Charlevoix, with surface area and of shoreline, is a very prominent feature of the county. Red beryl Red beryl (formerly known as "bixbite" and marketed as "red emerald" or "scarlet emerald" but note that both latter terms involving "Emerald" terminology are now prohibited in the United States under Federal Trade Commission Regulations) is a red variety of beryl. It was first described in 1904 for an occurrence, its type locality, at Maynard's Claim (Pismire Knolls), Thomas Range, Juab County, Utah. The old synonym "bixbite" is deprecated from the CIBJO, because of the risk of confusion with the mineral bixbyite (both were named after the mineralogist Maynard Bixby). The dark red color is attributed to Mn3+ ions.

Michigan Islands Wilderness Area, a relatively small wilderness area of 12.5 acres (0.05 km2.), consists of Pismire Island, Scarecrow Island, and Shoe Island within the Michigan Islands National Wildlife Refuge. These three islands, which constitute part of the group of islands that make up the larger refuge, were elevated to the rank of a United States wilderness area in 1970. All three islands are noted for their infrequent human visitation and their roles as breeding grounds for freshwater wading birds, such as the great blue heron. The three islands that make up this Wilderness Area are widely separated from each other.

Tresckow is located in the western corner of Carbon County at (40.915631, -75.963881), at an elevation of on a hill lying between Spring Mountain to the south and Pismire Ridge to the north. The city of Hazleton is to the north in Luzerne County, and the borough of Beaver Meadows is to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all of it land. While Tresckow has its own box post office with the ZIP code of 18254, surrounding areas use the Beaver Meadows ZIP code of 18216.
