Incarcerated for smuggling drug money for her ex-girlfriend, Piper ends up in prison with said ex while her male fiance pines away for her.

There is one serious subplot: the ill-starred romance between the alcoholic but romantic rake Captain Devereux and the virtuous Lily Walsingham. Their romance is scuppered when he is accused of "ruining" a young girl and having promised to marry her (he denies the latter, at least). Lily turns down Devereux's offer of marriage, and eventually pines away and dies. Devereux makes attempts to reform himself, but it is too late.

In the film, Ginny (another singer) pines away for Louis, who is too infatuated with May Daly to notice, and it is only at the end that he realizes that Ginny loves him. The dream sequence purposely was delayed by 58 minutes, with vaudeville-type acts performed as a floor show before the sequence got underway. The Louis XV/Mme. DuBarry scenes, unlike the play, featured very little singing.

Security lights flash and papers begin to fly around the bank, while the customers and staff begin to dance. The police arrive and they too join the dance before escorting Mraz out in handcuffs, slamming him against the hood of the police car. The teller comes running out of the bank and watches him being taken away. Now sharing a jail cell, a bereft Mraz doodles on the walls and pines away the hours.

The deal soon sours as he struggles to keep his cattle and prize horses from the network of rustlers about the wild country of Arizona, not sure who he can trust and who he can't. Hettie Ide pines away for the missing Nevada, meanwhile fending off a horde of suitors.

One day, as he is leaving the apartment, he realizes that he has left his purse behind; but when he returns and inquires about it, Adélaïde brazenly insists that no such purse has been left in their apartment. The young man suspects he has been robbed by the women and he stops visiting them. Over the following week he pines away.
