Davis then moved-up the organization, making stops at the Class-A Williamsport Grays (1959) and the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons (1960–1962) until he was called up to the major league Philadelphia Phillies in 1962.
He made his major league debut pinch-hitting for J. C. Romero against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but was optioned back to Triple-A on July 21. He was recalled to take Pedro Feliz' place on the roster on July 29, after Feliz sat out three straight games with a back injury. His first major league hit came on August 6, a single to left field against the Florida Marlins, which also notched his first RBI, driving in third baseman Eric Bruntlett.
Gedman made his debut for the Sox at the age of 20 in September 1980, pinch-hitting for Carl Yastrzemski. In 1981, regular Sox catcher Carlton Fisk was granted free-agency and signed with the Chicago White Sox, leaving the catcher position open. Gedman shared catching duties with Gary Allenson, and played well enough to be named The Sporting News Rookie of the Year. Following a poor 1982, Gedman's hitting improved the next two seasons under the instruction of Red Sox hitting coach Walt Hriniak.
Melhuse collected his first career hit on August 24, , in the 12th inning of an unusual game between the Rockies and Atlanta Braves. Out of pitchers, Rockies manager, Buddy Bell, asked injured catcher, Brent Mayne, who was unable to swing a bat due to a sprained left wrist, if he could pitch. Mayne pitched the 12th inning and held the Braves scoreless. The following inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Melhuse, pinch hitting for Mayne, singled over the shortstop's head to win the game.
Pinch-hitting for National League starting pitcher Bob Friend, he batted against Whitey Ford in the fourth inning and was retired on a foul pop fly to the catcher. At the end of the '56 season, he was sent to the Philadelphia Phillies in the same trade that brought Del Ennis to St. Louis. Repulski hit 20 home runs for the Phillies in 1957. A year later, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with two other players in exchange for second baseman Sparky Anderson.
Walls, pinch hitting for Larry Burright, made the final out, lining out to center fielder Willie Mays. The following year, Walls was a member of the world champion Dodgers, but did not appear in his club's four-game sweep of the New York Yankees in the 1963 World Series. In 902 total games played over ten National League seasons, Walls collected 670 hits, with 88 doubles, 31 triples and 66 homers. He matched Mathewson in the eighth and ninth, and the game went into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Fred Merkle got to Wood knocking in a run with a single. But in the bottom of the tenth, Clyde Engle, pinch-hitting for Wood, hit an easy fly ball to Fred Snodgrass in center field, and Snodgrass dropped the ball. Given new life, the "Snodgrass Muff" cost the Giants as Speaker and Larry Gardner each knocked in a run to overcome the 1-run deficit.

In Martin, as one of two backup catchers to Jerry Grote (the other was Duffy Dyer), played on a Mets team that shockingly won the National League East title (both leagues now had two divisions after expanding from 10 teams to 12) after trailing the Chicago Cubs by as many as 10 games in August. In Game One of the first-ever NLCS, which the Mets swept over the Atlanta Braves, Martin, pinch-hitting for Tom Seaver, drove in Weis and Ed Kranepool with a base-hit off Phil Niekro during a five-run eighth inning, the Mets winning the game 9–5. The Mets went on to win the World Series in equally surprising fashion, in five games over the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. In Game Four of that Series, his Mets leading two games to one, Martin was involved in a controversial play. With the game tied 1–1 in the bottom of the 10th and pinch-runner Rod Gaspar on second, Martin, again pinch-hitting for Seaver, bunted to the mound and, while running to first, was hit on the arm by Pete Richert’s errant throw, the error allowing Gaspar to score the winning run.
The Braves would retake the lead on a Donaldson hit by pitch, a Nick Markakis double, and Tyler Webb intentionally walked Adam Duvall, who was pinch hitting for Matt Joyce. One out later, Swanson singled in two runs on a ground ball to shortstop Paul DeJong that was deflected by Edman's glove. Chris Martin came out the bullpen, but did not throw a pitch as he left with an oblique injury, and was replaced by Luke Jackson. Jackson allowed a solo home run to Goldschmidt to cut the lead to one.

He was pinch-hitting for Francisco Cabrera after a Minnesota pitching change with Mark Lemke on third Base. Facing top reliever Steve Bedrosian with one out, Willard lofted a high fly out to right fielder Shane Mack that proved to be deep enough to score Lemke with the winning run. Willard's catching career came to an abrupt end on May 10, 1994 when a foul tip off the bat of Julio Franco struck his right shoulder, causing a fracture and damaged cartilage. He was catching for the Seattle Mariners versus the Chicago White Sox.
The Giants continued to hit Perranoski in the top of the eighth, with singles by Davenport and Mays to open the inning. Jack Smith entered in relief but allowed a single to Ed Bailey pinch hitting for Larsen which scored Davenport to cut the Dodgers' lead to 7–6. Mays attempted to advance to third on the play but was called out. The play drew arguments from Mays, Alvin Dark, and third base coach Whitey Lockman as third base umpire Jocko Conlan appeared to call Mays safe before changing it to out.
His first hit came in his next at-bat on September 28 in a 9–1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco's Candlestick Park. Pinch- hitting for Baseball Hall of Famer Warren Spahn in the ninth inning, he singled off Larry Jaster. As he rounded third base, Garvey, who after the game would be compared by teammates to fictional baseball hero Roy Hobbs, was met by fellow Padres who later carried him off the field in celebration. Following the 7–5 Padres victory, grateful fans thronged against stadium barricades chanting Garvey's name. Garvey, about to play in his fifth World Series, called the experience "the greatest playoffs I've ever seen." Garvey made his final appearance in a game on May 23, 1987, pinch-hitting for Lance McCullers in the ninth inning.

In that game he came to bat after another rookie, Nino Escalera, an Afro-Latin American from Puerto Rico who pinch hit immediately before Harmon to become the first black player to appear for the Cincinnati franchise. Harmon got his first hit on April 25, 1954.

The Royals mounted a threat in their half of the eighth. Torrez walked both Amos Otis and Pete LaCock with two outs, but relief ace Sparky Lyle came in and struck out Cookie Rojas, the Royals' DH playing in what would be his last major-league game. With apparently very little confidence in regular closer Mark Littell, who struggled in 1977, Royals manager Whitey Herzog sent Game 3 stopper Dennis Leonard out to preserve the lead in the ninth. Leonard, unaccustomed to short relief, yielded a bloop single to Paul Blair and walked Roy White (pinch hitting for Bucky Dent) with no outs.
Six runs were scored in the final inning, three by each team, for an exciting ending as the American League eked out a 6-5 victory. The game's scoring began in the second inning with a Mickey Mantle single, Ted Williams walk and Vic Wertz base hit, followed by walks to Yogi Berra and Harvey Kuenn that put the AL on top, 2-0. The score remained that way until the sixth, when a Moose Skowron double and Berra single made it 3-0. Scoring twice in the seventh, the NL closed the gap with a two-run double by Gus Bell, pinch-hitting for Frank Robinson.
Near the end of the 1956 season, the Brooklyn Dodgers purchased Mitchell's contract from Cleveland. Mitchell is perhaps best remembered, however unfairly, for making the final out in Don Larsen's perfect game during Game 5 of the 1956 World Series for the New York Yankees against Mitchell's new team, the Dodgers. Mitchell, pinch-hitting for Brooklyn pitcher Sal Maglie, took a called third strike to end the only perfect game in Series history. Mitchell, who is tied for seventh place as one of the all-time toughest hitters to strike out (34-1 ratio), always maintained that the third strike he took was really a ball.
O'Brien was born in Compton, California graduated from Millikan High School in Long Beach, California. He then attended Long Beach City College and was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1964, but was drafted out of the minors by the Kansas City Athletics in November 1964, only to be traded back to Boston two years later. At the age of 25, O'Brien made his major league debut for Boston in 1969, pinch hitting for Fred Wenz in the bottom of the eighth inning in a game against the Baltimore Orioles. He finished the season with five triples, ranked ninth in the American League.
Williams's 1940 Play Ball baseball card In the second week of spring training in 1941, Williams broke a bone in his right ankle, limiting him to pinch hitting for the first two weeks of the season.Williams & Underwood, p. 84 Bobby Doerr later claimed that the injury would be the foundation of Williams's season, as it forced him to put less pressure on his right foot for the rest of the season. Against the Chicago White Sox on May 7, in extra innings, Williams told the Red Sox pitcher, Charlie Wagner, to hold the White Sox, since he was going to hit a home run.
Wainwright cruised through the remainder of the third inning and all the way through the next four innings as well, allowing only a single by Taylor in the fifth inning and a single by shortstop Trea Turner in the sixth. The score was still 1–0 when Wainwright finally ran into trouble in the eighth inning. He struck out Taylor to begin the inning, but Matt Adams, pinch-hitting for Scherzer, hit a deep one-out single, then advanced to second on a Trea Turner single. On a full count, right fielder Adam Eaton then hit a double down the right field line that scored Adams and Turner to give the Nationals a 3–0 lead.
Cimoli returned to the bench in Game 7 when Skinner returned. In the eighth inning, with the Pirates trailing 7–4, Cimoli, pinch-hitting for pitcher Roy Face, led off with a single off Bobby Shantz, advanced to second on Virdon's bad-hop grounder, which struck Yankee shortstop Tony Kubek in the throat, then scored on Dick Groat's single, the first run in a five-run inning to give the Pirates a 9–7 lead. The Pirates gave the lead away in the ninth before finally winning the game in the bottom half on Bill Mazeroski's lead-off home run. On June 15, 1961, the Pirates traded Cimoli to the Milwaukee Braves for Johnny Logan.
Campbell was promoted to the Mets from Las Vegas on May 10, 2014, in what his father Hugh described as a "glorious weekend". He made his debut batting against the Philadelphia Phillies in the bottom of the sixth inning pinch-hitting for Lucas Duda with the bases loaded, hitting a sac-fly to right fielder Marlon Byrd on a 1-0 count driving in Daniel Murphy for his first major league RBI off pitcher Jake Diekman. On May 11, Campbell got his first major league hit, a single in the bottom of the fourth inning off pitcher Cole Hamels. On May 21, he hit his first major league homerun, a two run home run off Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher Hyun-jin Ryu.
The Nationals scored five runs in the sixth inning to salt the game away, with Cabrera pinch-hitting for Voth and driving in two with a double. By losing the game, the Indians were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since the 2015 season. Washington quickly jumped out ahead on September 28 with a nine-run second inning, punctuated by a Parra grand slam to straightaway center. The big inning gave the Nationals enough room to work around one of Corbin's worst starts of the year, as the southpaw was chased from the mound in the fifth inning after allowing six earned runs in his last start of the regular season. The Nationals won 10–7, ensuring home field advantage in the Wild Card Game.
Stengel's use of platooning meant more players saw more use, and he was generally more prone to put in a pinch hitter or replace his pitcher than other managers. Although only once in Stengel's time (1954) did the Yankees lead the league in number of pinch hitters, Stengel was known for using them in odd situations, once pinch-hitting for Moose Skowron in the first inning after a change of pitcher. Additionally, according to James, Stengel "rotated lineups with mad abandon, using perhaps 70 to 100 different lineups in a 154 game season". Although Stengel was not the first Yankee manager to use a regular relief pitcher—Harris had seen success with Joe Page in 1947—his adoption of the concept did much to promote it.
Carl Yastrzemski Jim Lonborg enjoyed his best season as a professional in 1967 capturing the Cy Young Award with an A.L. best 22 wins (against nine losses), was tops with 246 strikeouts, and had an impressive earned run average of 3.16. Lonborg continued his superb pitching starting Game 2 for the Red Sox and for innings, the Cardinals could only manage one baserunner, a seventh inning walk by Curt Flood. After Tim McCarver and Mike Shannon led off the eighth with groundouts, Julián Javier turned a Lonborg fastball around, lining a double into the left- field corner breaking up his no-hitter. Bobby Tolan, pinch-hitting for weak- hitting Dal Maxvill, ended the inning by grounding out to second-base.
Seth Smith, pinch hitting for the pitcher in the bottom of the sixth, hit a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Matsui to give the Rockies a 6–5 lead. The Rockies' Garrett Atkins appeared to homer in the bottom of the seventh, extending the Rockies lead, but umpires ruled that the ball hit padding on the outfield wall, which was still in play, and awarded Atkins a double. Jamey Carroll pinch ran for Atkins, but no runs scored in the inning. The Rockies brought in closer Brian Fuentes in the top of the 8th, but the Padres re-tied the game when Geoff Blum singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Brian Giles.

Belloir received his first call to the majors when a broken thumb sidelined Braves second baseman Marty Perez. A shortstop by trade, Belloir filled in at short while regular Braves shortstop Larvell Blanks filled in at second. He made his major-league debut on August 2 and fouled out pinch hitting for pitcher Max León in his only at- bat.
In spring camp, Fukuda was once again invited to train with the first team but injured his calf in practice where he was then demoted to the farm team to recover. He was the Western League monthly MVP in June and in July he was brought up to the first team. On 7 July 2009, Fukuda made his debut against the Tokyo Yakult Swallows pinch hitting for Kenichi Nakata at Meiji Jingu Stadium and became the 49th player in NPB history to hit a home-run in his first at-bat. He made his first field appearance as a substitute for an injured Tony Blanco at first base on 31 July however poor hitting as a pinch-hitter thereafter led to his demotion to the farm in August.
Giants outfielder Dusty Rhodes, pinch hitting for Monte Irvin, hit a three-run walk-off homer that won Game 1 of the 1954 World Series over the heavily favored Cleveland Indians in the 10th inning. Because the homer had barely cleared the right-field fence in the Polo Grounds, the shortest in baseball at that time, it was called a "Chinese home run", implying that it hadn't required much effort to hit. Many New York sportswriters riffed on this idea in the coverage. Young began his piece: In reaction to Young's use of so many Chinese stereotypes, Shavey Lee, a Chinatown restaurateur considered the unofficial "mayor" of the Chinese American population in the city, collected signatures from his community on a Chinese-language petition to the Giants' secretary, demanding that all sportswriters stop using the term.
After hitting .309 with nine home runs during a year spent at the Rookie and Class A levels of the Dodgers' farm system, he entered the Rule 5 draft that fall, and the Angels acquired him. He remained on the Halos' 28-man, early-season roster when the 1967 American League season began and made his debut April 12 against Mickey Lolich of the Detroit Tigers, making a ground ball out to the second baseman in the ninth inning, pinch-hitting for veteran relief pitcher Jim Coates to make the final out in the Tigers' 6–3 win at Anaheim Stadium.Retrosheet box score: 1967-04-12 In his other two plate appearances, Hibbs struck out against Darold Knowles of the Washington Senators on May 6,Retrosheet box score: 1967-05-06 and fanned against Jim O'Toole of the Chicago White Sox on May 13.
Maddon countered by pinch-hitting for Schwarber, bringing right-hander Albert Almora Jr. to the plate. Solis, although he had posted a 5.88 ERA during the season, actually had fared better against right-handed batters than left-handers, but on Solis's seventh pitch, Almora singled – his first career postseason hit in 15 at-bats – to score Zobrist and tie the game at 1–1. Solis then gave up a single to right fielder Jason Heyward that advanced Almora to second before Brandon Kintzler relieved Solis and got shortstop Addison Russell to line out to Taylor in center field. Heyward made a rare baserunning mistake by attempting to advance to second on Russell's liner, allowing Taylor to double him off at first base to end the inning. On August 5, the Cardinals took a 4-0 lead into the top of ninth inning, only to have Villone, Isringhausen and Franklin combine to give up four runs to the Dodgers. It was the 27th blown save of the season for the Cardinal bullpen, worst in MLB. (The Cardinals eventually salvaged a 6-4 win when Ryan Ludwick hit a walk-off homer in extra innings.) After the game, the Cardinals announced that Isringhausen was again being removed from the closer's role.Closer-by committee likely in the Cards: Isringhausen loses stopper job after Tuesday's four-run ninth Chris Perez returned from the minor leagues and got the first save of his career; a five- out save as the Cardinals beat L.A. 9-6 on August 6.Cards 9, Dodgers 6 Rick Ankiel was limited to pinch-hitting for 14 games at the end of July and the beginning of August due to an abdominal strain.
Castro with Chia-Jen Lo for the Houston Astros in 2013 On June 20, 2010, the Astros promoted Castro to the MLB from the Class AAA Round Rock Express. He made his MLB debut on June 22, 2010, at Minute Maid Park against the San Francisco Giants. He singled off Tim Lincecum in his first career at-bat. Castro hit his first major league home run on June 24, 2010, against Matt Cain. On March 2, 2011, while playing in a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers, Castro suffered a knee injury while running to first base. He underwent surgery two days later on March 4 to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament and a damaged meniscus. As a result, he missed the entire 2011 season. On June 13, 2012, while pinch-hitting for Xavier Cedeño, Castro grounded out to Joaquin Arias to record the last out for Matt Cain's perfect game. He played 87 games in the 2012 season, finishing the year with a .
He was 4th in the Serie Nacional in slugging and third in homers behind Alexei Bell and Yohenis Céspedes. He also ranked among the leaders in total bases (tied with Joan Carlos Pedroso for 9th with 180), RBI (5th) and walks (tied with Yoandy Garlobo for 8th with 60). His 37 intentional walks were 14 more than runner-up Garlobo as he led the circuit. Peraza was named to the Serie Nacional All-Star team at DH. Peraza backed up Michel Enríquez at DH for Cuba in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and batted cleanup twice. He was 4 for 9 with a homer and 3 runs in the event, putting him third on the Cuban squad in average, slugging, OBP and OPS behind Frederich Cepeda and Yoenis Céspedes. Peraza powered Cuba to a 5-4 win over Australia; pinch-hitting for Joan Carlos Pedroso with a 4-3 deficit, 2 outs and one on in the bottom of the 8th against Rich Thompson, Peraza smacked a game-winning 2-run homer.
In a near- clone of the game the Nationals lost to the Giants on June 10, Scherzer surrendered a two-run home run to Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis and received no run support as Toronto cruised from there to a 2–0 finish. It was the first time since August 2015 that Scherzer received losing decisions in back-to-back starts. The Blue Jays went on to sweep the series on June 17, 8–6, scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on the first home run reliever Ryan Madson had allowed since June 2017, off the bat of Toronto left fielder Teoscar Hernández, which was immediately followed by another solo shot by the third baseman Solarte. Resuming the suspended game against the Yankees at Nationals Park from May 15, the Nationals scored the eventual winning run on a statistical oddity, as Soto—pinch-hitting for left fielder Matt Adams—hit a two-run home run in a game that technically started five days before he made his major league debut.
It included 210 of his 241 career at-bats, as McAnany, a contact hitter with little power, batted .276 for the White Sox with no home runs but just 26 strikeouts. A native of Los Angeles, he attended Loyola High School and the University of Southern California there. He made his professional debut in 1955 with the Waterloo White Hawks. Called up to the majors in late 1958, McAnany made his MLB debut on September 19, 1958 in Kansas City, pinch-hitting for White Sox pitcher Early Wynn in the fifth inning. He struck out against Ralph Terry and ended up a hitless 0-for-13 for the '58 season. He then had his breakout season in 1959, becoming an integral part of a Sox team that captured the American League pennant for the first time since 1919. After the Sox won Game 1 of the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-0, McAnany started in right field for Game 2 against Dodger left-handed pitcher Johnny Podres. He went 0-for-3 as the Sox, after taking a 2-0 lead, lost the game 4-3.
