Lucius and Gaius were among his first victims. According to Livy, their heads were displayed on pikes on the speaker's platform (the Rostra) in the Forum.

Their heads were afterwards set on pikes on either side of the town gate. This image is still the coat of arms of Athenry. Due to a falling-out with King Fedlim, Muirchertach O Brian, Prince of Thomond, defected at some point and aided de Bermingham and de Burgh in defending the town. He became undisputed king of Thomond in 1318.

Smith's troops proceeded to Redoubt No. 2, which was quickly captured. Col. Sylvester Hill was killed by Confederate artillery fire from Redoubt No. 2, just as his men overran Confederate Redoubt No. 3 on the Confederate left flank. In the meantime, the IV Corps had been tasked with making a frontal assault from Granny White and Hillsboro Pikes on the left end of the Confederate line. The assault was to begin once Smith's troops began their assault on the left flank redoubts.

All of the officers in that tower were killed, and the ranks were decimated. The remainder of the men from the first tower, along with the soldiers in the other were deported to Barbados. The heads of 16 Royalist officers were cut off and sent to Dublin, where they were stuck on pikes on the approach roads. Any Catholic clergy found within the town were clubbed to death or "knocked on the head" as Cromwell put it including two who were executed the following day.

The Roman military readily adopted types of arms and armor that were effectively used against them by their enemies. Initially, Roman troops were armed after Greek and Etruscan models, using large oval shields and long pikes. On encountering the Celts they adopted much Celtic equipment and again later adopted items such as the "gladius" from Iberian peoples. Later in Rome's history, it adopted practices such as arming its cavalry with bows in the Parthian style and even experimented briefly with niche weaponry such as elephants and camel-troops.

In 1659 Solomon Richards was appointed Governor, but he was dismissed and imprisoned following the Restoration the next year. County Wexford was the centre of the 1798 rebellion against British rule. Wexford town was held by the rebels throughout the Wexford Rebellion and was the scene of a notorious massacre of local loyalists by the United Irishmen, who executed them with pikes on Wexford bridge. Two of these men died mysteriously, two asked for leave and never returned, and one inexplicably disappeared. On 13 January 1841, Sher Singh led a coup against empress Chand Kaur, and after two days of siege and battle, Dhian negotiated a ceasefire, which led to empress Chand's abdication, and Sher succeeding to the throne as emperor. Later, Dhian had the deposed empress's servants changed, who then assassinated Chand in her palace by smashing her head with wooden pikes on 11 June 1842. Dhian and emperor Sher were both assassinated on 15 September 1843, in a plot led by Ajit Singh Sandhawalia.

During the French Revolution, he refused to take the oath demanded by the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, and "swear to be faithful to the nation and to maintain liberty and equality or die defending it".Bluche, F. Held with other "refractory priests" in Carmes Prison, an improvised prison inside the closed priory of the Carmelite Friars in central Paris, he was given a second chance to take the oath, and again refused. He was among the 191 clergy who were either bayoneted or impaled on pikes on the threshold of the monastery on 2 September 1792.
