In response, Collias launched "Round About the Boise Valley," a hand- drawn and hand-lettered local news feature that ran in 50 installments from October 1950 through September 1951. In the 2010 book John Collias: Round About the Boise Valley, author Nick Collias describes the feature thusly: The "artist-reporter" covered boxing matches, beauty pageants and cattle brandings. He relayed personal anecdotes about random meetings on the street, dutifully acknowledged holidays like Flag Day and Dairy Month, and relayed seemingly every joke he overheard and ironic window-sign he spotted along his daily route. Each installment was capped off with a large and unapologetically accurate portrait of a local citizen, creating an overall impression somewhere between a yearbook and a phonebook.

The following series of events is an excellent example of black humor within this film. As Sergei lays bleeding on the couch approaching death and lamenting it was the only time he forgot his folder, Simon is lazily and slowly searching through his phonebook and eventually calls a friend who is a medical student (since they can't go to a hospital with a gunshot wound and several pounds of heroin). The friend, clad in punk attire and a colored mohawk, comes over and, after spending an ample amount of time chatting with Simon, takes a hit of cocaine, and pulls out a medical textbook. As his operation begins, it is clear that he has never done this sort of procedure before as he is forced to use the textbook as a guide.

An Asia-Pacific only version, known as the Nokia 3350, was in essence an improved 3330 with WAP, rhythmic backlight alert, animated screensavers, two-way Navi-Key, dedicated call and hang buttons, Chinese lunar calendar and a 96×65-pixel screen. Some 3350s have back covers that feature a photo-insert window, allowing users to put personal pictures from photographs, magazine cut-outs, etc.

When Gustloff, who was in the adjoining room, entered his office where Frankfurter was sitting opposite a picture of Hitler, Frankfurter introduced himself as a Jew and then shot him five times in the head, neck and chest; he left the premises (according to Heinz Schön, while hearing Hedwig Gustloff's cries), went into the next house and asked to use the telephone.

Few survivors living in 2108 have even seen a Crossed person, to the point that many younger people mockingly imitate the Crossed with face paint, and chasing each other pretending to be Crossed is a childhood game. In 2108, a group of survivors from the rebuilt settlement at Chattanooga, Tennessee (called "Chooga") make a horrifying discovery through the diary entries of Beauregard Salt, an infamous serial killer (known as the "Phonebook Killer") who was infected on C-Day. Because Salt was already homicidally insane and had no restrictions on his impulses, the Crossed virus did not significantly change him (perhaps because his psychopathic brain structure was already significantly altered from normal). Salt considered the new world of the Crossed to be a paradise, but he also had the foresight to realize that it would be difficult to sustain indefinitely – given that many Crossed will rape and eat their own small children.
