At Apex 2012, Mango fell short of people's expectations and placed 3rd after losing 0-3 to Armada in Winners' Finals and 1-3 to Hungrybox in Losers' Finals. After Apex 2012, Mango began to regain the dominant lead he held back in 2008.

At Apex 2014, Mango beat Fiction 2–0 in Winners' Quarterfinals but was defeated 1-3 by Dr. PeePee in Winners' Semifinals. Kevin Nanney (born September 25, 1990), also known by his gamer tag of PPMD and formerly known as Dr. PeePee, is an inactive American professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player who plays for Evil Geniuses. Nanney has been historically considered one of the dominant "Five Gods" of Melee, alongside Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman, Joseph "Mango" Marquez, Adam "Armada" Lindgren, and Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma. He is a two-time champion of the Apex tournament series and was ranked as one of the top six players in the world from 2013-2015, after which he was removed from rankings due to inactivity.

The PooPoo PeePee Tour was a concert tour by rock band Blink-182, Launched in support of the group's 1997 album Dude Ranch, the tour visited clubs and theaters in the summer/fall of 1998. It was the first major tour with drummer Travis Barker, who replaced original drummer Scott Raynor midway through a summer tour. Supporting acts included Unwritten Law and Home Grown. In a highly anticipated match, Mango defeated Armada 2-0 to reach Losers' Finals against Hungrybox. After defeating Hungrybox 2–0, Mango reached Grand Finals against Wobbles. Mango then defeated Wobbles in 2 sets, 3-0 and 3-1 to become the champion of EVO 2013. Following his EVO victory, he was considered to be the best player in the game.

At Vindication, Mango defeated Mew2King in Winners' Finals 3–0, but lost the first set of Grand Finals 1–3. However, he managed to win the second set 3–1, winning the tournament. Zenith 2013 was a significant tournament, with all 4 top players in the United States present for the first time since Apex 2013 as well as being a road to EVO qualifier. Mango was sent to the Losers' Bracket by Mew2King after losing Winners' Semifinals 1–3. He defeated DaShizWiz 2–0 in Losers' Quarterfinals, Dr. PeePee 3–1 in Losers' Semifinals, and Mew2King 3–1 in Losers' Finals before reaching Grand Finals against Hungrybox.

There was a small revival for Apex 2016, but on a much smaller scale with almost nobody outside of regional attendance. Currently, the biggest Melee events in the United States are Community Effort Orlando (CEO), DreamHack, Evolution Championship Series (EVO), GENESIS, The Big House, Shine, and Super Smash Con (SSC). Currently – the Platinum Era – the best players of Melee, colloquially known as the "Five Gods", are Mew2King, Joseph "Mango" Marquez, Kevin "PPMD" Nanney (formerly known as Dr. PeePee), Adam "Armada" Lindgren, and Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma. However, William "Leffen" Hjelte broke through the barrier of the Five Gods, after defeating Mew2King at Apex 2015, that stood for many years, and is universally agreed to be at a comparable skill level; he is known to be a God slayer and the top 6 were collectively known as the "Big 6" and he was the only Smash player to have beaten all Five Gods.
