Africa has the world's highest incidence rates of child labour. A report by the United Nations' International Labour Organization reveals that in 2016 nearly 1 out of every 5 children partakes in child labor. The problem is severe in sub-saharan Africa where more than 40% of all children aged 5–14 labour for survival, or about 48 million children. Although poverty is generally considered as the primary cause of child labour in Africa, recent studies show that the relationship between child labour and poverty is not as simple as a downward linear relationship.

Bertrand Labévue is another of Gaston's friends/sidekicks and also his cousin. As his name indicates (bévue means "blunder"), he shares his cousin's tendency to goof up. Bertrand suffers from acute depression, mirroring Franquin's own problems with the illness, and Gaston and Jules do their best to cheer him up with food, country drives and other things (all of which backfire comically). Manu is another friend, who regularly turns up in different jobs (like Bert in Mary Poppins): chimney sweep, sewer worker, installer of street signage... Sugimoto in a performance Taku Sugimoto is a Japanese guitarist. He initially gained attention in the late 1990s for his restrained, melodic playing, unusual in the world of free improvisation. Critic Bruce Russell describes this era of Sugimoto's music by writing: "Sugimoto is perhaps the pre-eminent stylist on the guitar ... He brings a golden glow to every session he partakes in, having abandoned amped up noise in favour of a much more introspective and calligraphic style of play." Mon Mon Mon Monsters is a 2017 Taiwanese horror-comedy film written, directed and co-produced by Giddens Ko. It premiered as the closing film for the 41st Hong Kong International Film Festival in April 2017, and was released in theaters on July 28, 2017. Unjustly accused of stealing money, Lin Shuwei is assigned to do community service alongside the bullies from class. As the gang of bullies progressively accept him as one of their own, Lin partakes in their misdeeds to seek their approval. During a night out, the group stumble upon a pair of flesh-eating female ghouls and capture one of them; they begin a sadistic game, which ultimately leads to disastrous consequences.

As one of the oldest institutions at the university, the band partakes in many of the gameday traditions.
