Coves in the area vary by elevation and topography, with second-growth oak and hickory more common in lower-lying areas. Forests surrounding the lake contain rich, high-altitude flora including rare wildflowers and ferns, such as Painted Trillium, which grows near Rhododrendron.

The northern riverine forest is a type of forest ecology most dominant along waterways in the northeastern and north-central United States and bordering areas of Canada. Key species include willow, elm, American sycamore, painted trillium, goldthread, common wood-sorrel, pink lady's-slipper, wild sarsaparilla, and cottonwood. One of the distinct ecosystems is the Riverine Forest. These are found on the lower flood plains along the rivers edge.

The Harvey Butler Memorial Rhododendron Sanctuary 30 acres (121,000 m²) is a nature reserve located on Route 11A, Springvale, Maine, United States. The sanctuary is open to the public, and is owned by the New England Wild Flower Society, which also maintains the Garden in the Woods. The sanctuary contains a 5.3 acre (21,000 m²) stand of Great Laurel (Rhododendron maximum), Spice Bush, Clintonia, Painted trillium, and at least 39 species of wildflowers.

Laurel Lake is home to large mouth bass, rainbow trout, brook trout, yellow perch, pickerel, eel, and blue gill, snapping and painted turtles, heron, beaver, eastern newt, bullfrog, and leopard frog. The forest itself is home to many animals including black bear, white tail deer, porcupine, coyote, fox, raccoon, and ground squirrel. Aside from the mountain laurel, other common flowers in Erving State Forest include pitcher plants, the daylily variety Hemerocallis fulva (orange daylily), and painted trillium.

In March 2011, the band released their first full length studio album, Metal Renaissance. The album included an instrumental intro by local folk group Painted Trillium, and was recorded on tape in an attempt to capture a classic analog sound. Bassists Ben Washburn and Jesse Keen both perform on the album. The band continued to play local shows, but also traveled to Chicago for Dame-Nation, a female fronted metal festival similar to Flight of the Valkyries.

Trillium undulatum, the painted trillium, is a species of flowering plant in the family Melanthiaceae. It is also known as painted lady (not to be confused with a painted lady butterfly), smiling wake robin, or trille ondulé in French. The plant is found from Ontario in the north to northern Georgia in the south and from Michigan in the west to Nova Scotia in the east. It demands strongly acidic, humus-rich soils and tends to be found in the shade of acid- loving trees such as eastern white pine, red maple, red spruce and balsam fir.
