The Appreciation, which had originally been intended for distribution around the Royal Navy, was deemed so full of "far- reaching and astringent criticism of Jellicoe" and of new and therefore irrelevant tactical theory that Beatty and his Board of Admiralty were compelled to decide against its publication. Indeed, Admirals Roger Keyes and Ernle Chatfield were moved to write to Beatty that if published the Appreciation "would rend the service to its foundations".

Many European psychiatrists had concluded that Africans were destined to be less intelligent and less emotionally stable than Europeans, and this approach tainted their professional practice. Written while Fanon was still studying to become a psychiatrist, he constructs the imagined, stereotypical Arab in the minds of the French doctors, who would have considered themselves more civilized: "Who are they, those creatures starving for humanity who stand buttressed against the frontiers (though I know them from experience to be terribly distinct) of complete recognition?" This is one of Fanon's early works, and it represents some of his original thinking on the institutional and societal nature of colonialism that was most dangerous to Africans, as well as a blend of the political thought and psychological expertise that he would blend throughout his life.

He took his inspiration from the classics of modern painting, mainly the work of František Kupka. From 1960 he produced non–figurative paintings, in the beginning with quite a variable artistic form, which later became stabilized in two main lines, antipodal in a certain way and built on common aesthetic principle. It was based on the expression of the dynamism of life, sensualistic relation to reality and a harmosation principle dominating the whole of the painting. Vašíček reacted to the topical incentives of world art, for instance by increased interest in the expression value of the surface structure of the painting matter, by return to the principles of geometric abstraction, the Freedom of Tashist painting and spontaneity of gestic art, transforming all of these incentives into his own individual version rooted in the world of the artist's original thinking.

Highlighting the social structure that discourages replication in psychology, Brian D. Earp and Jim A. C. Everett enumerated five points as to why replication attempts are uncommon: # "Independent, direct replications of others' findings can be time-consuming for the replicating researcher" # "[Replications] are likely to take energy and resources directly away from other projects that reflect one's own original thinking" # "[Replications] are generally harder to publish (in large part because they are viewed as being unoriginal)" # "Even if [replications] are published, they are likely to be seen as 'bricklaying' exercises, rather than as major contributions to the field" # "[Replications] bring less recognition and reward, and even basic career security, to their authors" For these reasons the authors advocated that psychology is facing a disciplinary social dilemma, where the interests of the discipline are at odds with the interests of the individual researcher.

In 2002 Siegel received the National Magazine Award in the category "Reviews and Criticism". Jeff Bercovici, writing in Media Life Magazine, quoted the award citation, which called the essays "models of original thinking and passionate writing... tough-minded yet generous criticism is prose of uncommon power—work that dazzles readers by drawing them into the play of ideas and the enjoyment of lively, committed debate". In 2007 Caryn James, commenting on Not Remotely Controlled in the New York Times, said that "at their best, Siegel’s scattershot observations offer a kind of drive-by brilliance," but that he often "wildly overstates his case or ignores inconvenient evidence." Siegel's 2008 critique of Web culture, Against the Machine: Being Human in the Age of the Electronic Mob, was called by Janet Maslin in the New York Times "rigorously sane, fair, and illuminating".

The Psychology of Dementia Praecox (1909) Psychogenesis of Mental Disease, volume 3 in The Collected Works, shows the development of Jung's thoughts about the nature of mental illness, and established him as a pioneer and scientific contributor to psychiatry. It contains "On the Psychology of Dementia Praecox" (1907), which Abraham Brill described as "indispensable for every student of psychiatry;" as well as nine other papers in psychiatry, all of which demonstrating Jung's original thinking about the origins of mental illness and give insight into the development of his later concepts such as the archetypes and the collective unconscious. Among the latter nine works, "The Content of the Psychoses" (1908) and two papers from 1956 and 1958, respectively, discuss Jung's conclusions after long experience in the psychotherapy of schizophrenia. This volume was edited and translated from German by Read, Hull, and Adler.

Design of a balanced scorecard is about the identification of a small number of financial and non-financial measures and attaching targets to them, so that when they are reviewed it is possible to determine whether current performance 'meets expectations'. By alerting managers to areas where performance deviates from expectations, they can be encouraged to focus their attention on these areas, and hopefully as a result trigger improved performance within the part of the organization they lead. The original thinking behind a balanced scorecard was for it to be focused on information relating to the implementation of a strategy, and over time there has been a blurring of the boundaries between conventional strategic planning and control activities and those required to design a balanced scorecard. This is illustrated well by the four steps required to design a balanced scorecard included in Kaplan & Norton's writing on the subject in the late 1990s: # Translating the vision into operational goals; # Communicating the vision and link it to individual performance; # Business planning; index setting # Feedback and learning, and adjusting the strategy accordingly.
