A tort is an action taken by a party who claims to have been wronged, to recover the damages sustained from the party who did the alleged wrongdoing. The tort of misfeasance in public office is based in the idea that those who hold public office and exercise public functions are subject to the law and must not abuse their powers to the detriment of the ordinary citizen. In this matter's hearing before two courts, a preliminary question was at issue: is it reasonable to think that the Office of the President of a University might be a public office within the meaning of this particular tort? La Perdida is centered on the life of a young Mexican-American woman, Carla Olivares, raised by her Anglo mother, who moves on a whim to Mexico City to search for her identity. (Although Abel herself lived in Mexico City for two years [1998–2000] with her (now) husband Matt Madden, the story is not autobiographical.) La Perdida is an expressively illustrated, emotional/relationship-based comic with strong cultural overtones. During her stay in Mexico City as an American expatriate attempting to gain a greater knowledge of her Mexican heritage, Carla encounters a variety of people, eventually rejecting her role within the expatriate social hierarchy and attempting to achieve a more authentic experience of life as an "ordinary" citizen of Mexico. Her encounters prove time and time again, however, that the dismissal of her background is not easily achieved and she eventually reconciles with the universality of human nature (in controversion to her initial notions of authenticity).

Paris By Night 90: Chân Dung Người Phụ Nữ Việt Nam (The Portrait of a Vietnamese Woman) is a Paris By Night program produced by Thúy Nga that was filmed at the Terrace Theater at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center on September 15, 2007 and September 16, 2007. The program was inspired by the conceptual idea of To Van Lai and Nguyễn Ngọc Ngạn to honor the sacrifice and endurance that Vietnamese women experience being a mother and a wife of the family as well as an ordinary citizen in times of war (Vietnam War) and peace. The program features songs, musicals, as well as skits that poignantly portray the significant role that Vietnamese women holds in all aspects of life throughout the years. From songs such as “Bốn Mắt Anh Yêu” and “Cô Bắc Kì Nho Nhỏ” that lively evoke the teenage pureness & innocence during high school years to more mature songs like “Mười Thương” that describes the softness and inner beauty of the Vietnamese woman.
