Grimes spoils the ball in defense in round 13, 2017 For the first time in his career, 2017 saw Grimes enter the season injury-free after also having a full and uninterrupted pre-season. He played a key role in the club's round 2 win over Collingwood, blanketing small forward opponent Alex Fasolo and keeping him goalless. Grimes was one of the club's best in round 5 too, recording an equal team-high seven tackles along with six intercepts and eight one percenters and earning himself two votes in the Coaches Association's Player of the Year award. Between rounds 10 and 15 he did not concede a single goal on his direct opponent, a figure that helped contribute to Champion Data ranking Richmond's defence as the fourth best in the competition after 14 rounds.

At the conclusion of the regular season Richmond had broken the league record for intercept marks in a season, with Astbury ranked third at Richmond in that statistic. In the club's qualifying final win over , Astbury recorded eight one percenters and was labelled "almost impassable" by AFL Media despite recording a season-low six disposals. He was the subject of significant media attention in the lead-up to the preliminary final two weeks later, after reports emerged that he contracted the common cold and was admitted to hospital for an intravenous drip just two days before that match. He was ultimately ruled fit to play in that match against and did so primarily in defence with a later stint in the forward line when Richmond faced a significant half time scoring deficit.

The Bandidos were founded by 36-year-old dockworker Donald Eugene Chambers on March 6, 1966, in San Leon, Texas.Texas Monthly: "The Gang’s All Here" by Skip Hollansworth APRIL 2007 He named the club in honor of the Mexican bandits who lived by their own rules and he recruited members from biker bars locally in Houston as well as in Corpus Christi, Galveston, and San Antonio. Like other outlaw motorcycle clubs (The Outlaws, the Mongols, and the Hells Angels), they call themselves "One Percenters", a phrase coined by the former president of the American Motorcyclist Association who once stated that 99 percent of motorcyclists were law-abiding citizens and 1 percent "outlaws." By the early 1970s, the club had over one hundred members, including many Vietnam War veterans.

In round 11 Rance attracted significant media and public criticism for a 'diving' incident during the Dreamtime at the 'G match in which he exaggerated contact in a marking contest with forward Shaun McKernan and drew a free kick as a result. He accepted a $1,000 fine after the incident was classified by the AFL's match review officer as staging. At the half-way point of the season Rance was named in Fox Footy's mid-year All Australian squad while also being named in the Herald Sun and AFL Media teams of 22 players. To the end of round 13 Rance was ranked number one in the league for intercepts as well as fourth for one percenters and ninth for total marks recorded that season. He continued to hold the league's number one rank for intercepts through round 16 and also improved to second for intercept marks and fifth for spoils.

In Round 4 on ANZAC Day against Essendon he had 23 touches and 10 marks, and in the following week he won an AFL Rising Star nomination. Shaw had 16 games with 18 or more disposals during the season, which showed his consistency. He somewhat tailed off at the end of the season, but still was effective with his one percenters. Shaws ended up having 448 disposals (313 kicks, 135 handballs) at an average of more than 20 touches a game. His best game being against Port Adelaide where he had 27 kicks, six handballs, 11 marks and kicked a fantastic goal in a thriller at AAMI Stadium. Heath also had 160 marks and accumulated 2210 Champion Data ranking points at an average of 100, and was ranked inside the top 10 in a game on 13 occasions, including two no.1 game rankings. Shaw played in his first final against the Western Bulldogs, but Collingwood lost.
