Those aboard the train thought nothing was amiss but there was no-one manning the locomotive. When the rail staff realised what was happening they unsuccessfully attempted to board the train in motion but being on a slope it quickly accelerated away from the station. Eight miles down the line at Cuesta de Gualliguaica the line makes a sharp bend next to the Elqui River. At this point the train derailed plunging into the ravine.
After the tunnel the lines runs over the 786 metre-long Pünderich Hangviadukt (a viaduct built on a slope with its supports much longer on the downhill side), the longest in Germany. During the 1982 expedition, Wickwire formed a relationship with female climber, Marty Hoey. While ascending Everest, one day Wickwire and Hoey were taking a brief rest on a slope within a steep and icy couloir at . When the two climbers above needed more rope Hoey got up to allow Wickwire to move into position to ascend.
There are numerous remnants of the C. K. G. Billings estate. The Fort Tryon Cottage, located on a slope just northwest of Corbin Circle, was originally a gatehouse for the estate. The structure is made of frame and stucco and contains three floors with a dining room and kitchen, as well as a patio. Building for storing charcoal, built on a slope. There were two buildings for the storage of charcoal, but they also contained room for the storage of other products. The bark of felled trees was sold in turn to tanneries. The storehouses were dug into a bank, so that material could be brought in at the back of the building, at the top of the slope, and removed at a lower level at the front.
The breeching strap would allow the horse to hold or brake the load as horse harnesses were previously attached to vehicles by straps around their necks as previously designed harnesses would constrict the horses neck preventing the horse from pulling heavier loads. The breeching strap acted as a brake when a cart tries to run forward when moving downwards on a slope and also make it possible to maneuver the cart in the reverse direction.
The loggia linking the former palace to the cathedral was built into an adjoining wing. Waterloo Park officially opened on August 7, 1893, then called West Side Park, following the purchase of Jacob Eby's 25 hectare farm in 1890. Situated on a slope near Silver Lake, the land was acquired from Eby's widow the Village of Waterloo for $74/acre. The land included Eby's farmhouse and existing orchards. It was purchased following a review by Waterloo to create more green space for the growing number of residents transitioning from rural to urban living.

There are a number of arable farms in the area and many smallholders still grow grapes, often to make their own wine. St Michael's Flags and Angel Meadow Park is a public park in Manchester, England, to the immediate northeast of the city centre, on a slope between the River Irk and Rochdale Road. It occupies an area of acres (3 ha), and was once an affluent suburb, until the 19th-century Industrial Revolution altered the social standing of the area and introduced poverty and disease. Regeneration of the park in the 2000s has created a gateway into the Irk Valley.

The Montefiore Windmill is a landmark windmill in Jerusalem, Israel. Designed as a flour mill, it was built in 1857 on a slope opposite the western city walls of Jerusalem, where three years later the new Jewish neighbourhood of Mishkenot Sha'ananim was erected, both by the efforts of British Jewish banker and philanthropist Moses Montefiore. Jerusalem at the time was part of Ottoman-ruled Palestine. Today the windmill serves as a small museum dedicated to the achievements of Montefiore.
In 1885, Královo Pole was connected to the railway. In 1905 the settlement became a town (city). Soon after the World War I it became a part of Brno. While the oldest part of Královo Pole down at the Ponávka brook retained its village look, the newly built-up area on a slope ascending westwards developed a cohesive urbanistic structure centered in the Slovanské náměstí ("The Slavic Square"), with Art Nouveau city blocks and functionalistic family houses.

Dwinelle is frequently referred to as the "Freshman Maze" because of its confusing architecture. Soon after the building's construction, according to author William Rodarmor, students would "enter Dwinelle in their freshman year and emerge, blinking in the sunshine, just in time for graduation." Bojanja Vas is a clustered village on a slope on heavily karstified terrain. There are small fields on poor-quality soil to the south, vineyards to the east and south, and woods to the north and west. Just to the northwest of there, off the modern road, is where Evans chose to have Villa Ariadne built as his home away from home and an administrative center. The villa is on a slope overlooking the ruins. At the edge of the property, on the road, is a pre-excavation house renovated many times as a residence for the official keeper, called the Taverna.

The Butte is a mound about high, on a slope near the Gird trenches (). In the Franco- Prussian War the mound had been tunnelled and during the Battle of the Somme the Germans fortified the Butte with machine-gun posts and encircled by many belts of barbed wire. From the mound, Pozières to the south-west; La Barque and Bapaume to the north-east are easily visible. Many German artillery positions had been established on the ground east of the Butte.
Shelsley means "clearing on a slope" from Old English scelf "shelf (of land)" and leāh "wood, clearing". The name was recorded as Scillislege in 948. Charles Nott, the Parson of Shelsley, was a leader of the Clubmen who in 1645 drew up the Woodbury Declaration, which listed the grievances that local people had at the behaviour of Royalist forces in the area. Following the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 the Shelsleys Parish ceased to be responsible for maintaining the poor in its parish.
The fort is on a peninsula about 2.5 km long and is a registered historical site, consisting of several ruins. There is a breeding colony of brown pelicans, of up to 60 nests, on the west side of the point, on a slope below the fort. The 278 ha site has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The vegetation is characterized by thorny scrubland of Acacia macracantha and A. tortuosa, reaching over 2 m in height.
Columbia station was built horizontally on a slope, so that the inbound platform in the north is underground, while the outbound platform in the south is predominantly at grade. Bear Valley Mass Grave Vincarje is the site of two known mass graves from the period immediately after the Second World War. They are part of the mass graves associated with the nearby former Loka Castle prison. The Castle Wall 1 Mass Grave () is located in a meadow on a slope about outside the wall of Loka Castle. It contains the remains of an unknown number of Home Guard prisoners of war and Slovene civilians, and possibly victims of other nationalities.
The Auditorium Niccolo Paganini is a concert hall constructed inside a former sugar mill in the historic center of the city of Parma, Italy. The theater has 780 seats placed on a slope for maximum visibility of the stage. Piano retained the original exterior walls of the main building, but removed the transversal interior walls and replaced them with glass walls, so the entire interior is visible from the outside, and those inside can see the park outside the theater.
In the Swiss town of Vevey the machine was loaded with 700 pounds of stone and wood, together with four men, and ran for 26 meters on a slope of about 9% at a speed of 3 km/h. Birseck Castle () is located in the municipality of Arlesheim in the canton of Basel-Country. Birseck Castle is also called "Untere Burg Birseck" or "Vordere Burg Birseck" and is one of four castles on a slope called Birseck that confines the plain of the Birs river. The Eremitage building group that includes the castle is listed as a heritage site of national significance. Burg Reichenstein is the sister castle to Birseck and sits on a higher slope to the north.

The boulder is approximately 6 meters high and 5 meters wide and weighs around 250 tons. It seems to float and barely stand on a slope on top of high plinth which is a naturally eroded hill, and is said to have been at the same place for 1200 years. A part of the boulder on top back has eroded away, making it look like a half-spherical rock from the back, while it looks round shaped from other three sides.

They contain the remains of an unknown number of Croatian soldiers and civilians that were disarmed and then murdered at the end of the war. Most of the victims were murdered in the mine, but a smaller group was murdered at the tailings dump. The Polajna Mine Mass Grave (), also known as the Hasenbichl Mine Mass Grave (), is located on a slope north of the houses at Polajna no. 10.
Model of Kowloon Walled City located at the entrance of Kowloon Walled City Park The walled city was located in what became known as the Kowloon City area of Kowloon. In spite of its transformation from a fort into an urban enclave, the walled city retained the same basic layout. The original fort was built on a slope and consisted of a plot measuring about . The stone wall surrounding it had four entrances and measured tall and thick before it was dismantled in 1943.
Frajhajm is the site of six known mass graves from the period immediately after the Second World War. They all contain the remains of civilian victims and prisoners of war that were brought from Maribor and the surrounding region and murdered in May and June 1945. The Ruše Lodge at Areh 1 Mass Grave () is located east of Saint Henry's Church. The Jure Saddle 1–3 mass graves () are clustered together in the northeast part of the settlement on a slope below the Zarja Hotel.
The church stands on the site of a small Roman camp, "which most probably has been for a Centurion's guard to protect the herds of cattle when grazing during summer, in the rich pastures on the banks of the river Aln, above Whittingham." The Transitional-style church is situated in a pastoral district near the source of the Aln. Nearby are the remains of a castle, and a pele tower that was later used as the vicarage house. The church is sited on a slope.
Encapsulated soil lifts are a technique that "encapsulates" soil in a biodegradable blanket and organized on a slope in such a way that creates the desired stream bank slope. The layers of soil, or lifts, are used to stabilize the banks of moderate to high level energy shorelines. Once constructed, the lifts are planted with the seeds of native flowers, shrubs and grasses. In addition to reducing soil erosion in the body of water, soil lifts protect water quality and the encompassed riparian habitats.
At the end of the cave is a water tank, which is fed from rain water. To get to the cave, one needs to turn right behind the gate of the southern wall of the monastery in an easterly direction on a slope that runs parallel to the monastery wall. Tsul`kälû' Tsunegûñ'yï is a patch on a slope of the mountain Tanasee Bald in Jackson County, North Carolina, on the ridge upon which the boundary of Haywood, Jackson, and Transylvania Counties converge. It is believed Tsul 'Kalu was responsible for clearing the spot for his residence.
The local church was a chapel of ease dedicated to Saint Ulrich (). The church stood on a slope above the village and was surrounded by a walled cemetery. The polygonal chancel was walled on three sides and probably rib-vaulted; it was oriented toward the northeast, continuing into a rectangular nave with a wide portico. The church was first mentioned in written sources by Johann Weikhard von Valvasor in 1689, but its architectural features indicate that it dated to at least the beginning of the 17th century.
At the north end of the divided section, it has an intersection with East Main Street, the main east-west business route through the city. About north of East Main Street, US 5 has an interchange with I-691 (at exit 8). At the intersection with Brittania Street, the road becomes North Broad Street, which climbs up on a slope as it meets with the north end of the Wilbur Cross Parkway. The northbound roadway overpasses the Parkway and then merges onto it from the right.
Guilian Verplanck II, a merchant from New York City, received 2,880 acres, 400 of which were on a slope overlooking the Hudson River. He named his estate Mount Gulian, in honor of his grandfather and had the first house on the site built between 1730 and 1740. The building was a small structure with an A-roof. Archaeological evidence suggests it was probably enlarged around 1767 and the characteristic gambrel roof as well as two porches were added between this year and the American Revolutionary War.
The School House is a three-storeyed, Gothic-influenced painted brick building, sited on a slope to the west of the Main Building. It has a red terracotta tiled roof, consisting of a central, low pitched hipped portion and more steeply pitched edges intersected by gables. A 1972 boarding house directly adjoins the School House to the north. The building has a rectangular plan, and is entered from the west on the ground floor, and the north, south and east on the first floor.
A section of four soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, coming from Crossmaglen, mounted an observation post at 2AM on 21 November 1975. The OP was on a slope at Drummuckavall behind bushes overlooking a small stream that ran along the border. Unknown to them, locals had spotted their position and informed the IRA. At 16:20 the next day, an IRA unit of up to 12 members attacked the OP. Heavy gunfire killed three of the Fusiliers and disabled their communications equipment.
The design of the building with its interplay of horizontal and vertical elements and curved balcony has aesthetic value. The place has a special association with the life or work of a particular person, group or organisation of importance in Queensland's history. The Fulton Residence is intimately associated with the esteemed architect Charles Fulton as the house he designed for his family.
This tree—a Douglas fir, not a redwood—was said to be Kent's favorite. Due to its height of and location on a slope, the tree leaned towards the valley for more than 100 years. Storms in El Niño years of 1981 and 1982 caused the tree to tilt even more and took out the top of the tree. During the winter of 2002–03, many storms brought high winds to Muir Woods causing the tree to lean so much that a fissure developed in January 2003.

Purtell Park had the abnormality of being on a slope, with the southern end being higher, although this is not noticeable on television. Since their merger with Hills District, they have been playing out of the Kev McKell Oval at Arana Hills.
An example of this is walking on a slope. The body must resist gravity while moving in a direction, and balancing itself on uneven ground. This forces the body to align the bones in a way that balances the body while at the same time achieving momentum through pushing against the ground in the opposite direction of the desired movement. Initially, it may seem that the legs are the prime movers of this action, but without balance, the legs will only cause the person to fall over.

Ithaca Gun Co. - Annie Oakley gun, 1916 In the late 19th century, more industry developed in Ithaca. In 1883 William Henry Baker and his partners started the Ithaca Gun Company, making shotguns. The original factory was located in the Fall Creek neighborhood of the city, on a slope later known as Gun Hill, where the nearby waterfall supplied the main source of energy for the plant. The company became an icon in the hunting and shooting world, its shotguns famous for their fine decorative work.

The initiative to build the monument commemorating the Polish cavalry started in 1978, and in 1981 a committee was formed to organize the construction of the monument. The monument had to stand on a slope of the Łazienkowska Thoroughfare (Trasa Łazienkowska) at the entrance to Jazdów Street, where the cornerstone was laid in 1983. In 1984, there was a design competition for the monument and from 13 entries, the design by sculptor and designer Mieczysław Naruszewicz was chosen. The statue was cast in 1987 at the Warsaw cooperative, Brąz Dekoracyjny.

Kalec Castle (, originally Kalc or Kauc) is a partially ruined castle in Bač in Slovenia. The castle, of which only a single tower and some sections of wall survive intact, stands on a slope known as Breg, near the source of the Pivka River, at an elevation of 618 m. Illustrated in Valvasor's 1689 Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, it was built in the mid-17th century by the noble house of Steinberg. Its later owners included the Auersperg family and the Slovene composer Miroslav Vilhar, who also died in it.
The spring itself became a reference point , chosen for the geographic attachment in honor of St. Dmitry Rostovsky to the river bank. Soldiers, officers, inhabitants of the fortress and inhabitants of the nearest settlement Poludenka used the well water. The spring was on a slope near the artillery pier; from it people made underground passage in the central part of the fortress, from which the water barrels were delivered. The Rich Well Then, the spring, which called Bogatuanovsky spring, supplied water to the city's quarters in 19 and 20 centuries.
An unincorporated hiking area just north of Santee is popular for mountain bikers. It has entrances at Prince Valiant Drive and Princess Joann Drive and includes many trails that extend to Poway and Santee Lakes, as well as a boot-shaped rock on a slope, unsurprisingly nicknamed “Boot Rock”. In flatter terrain, the intensity of the sunlight is diluted as it spreads out across a wider surface area. Pod was a prehistoric settlement and hill fort located on a plateau on a slope of Mt Koprivnica near Bugojno in the upper valley of the river Vrbas in modern Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fortified site was first inhabited in the early Bronze Age and even eneolithic (2500 to 1700 BCE). After the Bronze Age it was uninhabited for four centuries, until repopulated in the early Iron Age (~700 BCE) till the turn of the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. Stratified materials from Pod defined Central Bosnian cultural group of the late Bronze Age.
A Reuters journalist travelling on the train reported a loud noise and smoke as several of the carriages derailed around midday local time (11:00 GMT) in Eséka, about west of the capital. Victims were transported to a local hospital in Eséka, as well as to facilities in Douala. Social media images showed several carriages overturned on a slope beside the rail line, as hundreds of passengers looked on. Because of the accident and the earlier bridge collapse, Cameroon's main transportation axis was effectively cut for the time being.
Coca Castle is located on the outskirts of the town of Coca, about 45 kilometers (30 miles) to the north of Segovia, on a slope. It overlooks the meander of the River Voltoya, a tributary of River Eresma. It is one of the few Spanish castles that have not been constructed on hilltops; rather it has been constructed on a steep esplanade. Coca is the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. The site has been inhabited since the second century BC when the Arevaci arrived and settled here.
The roots make the palm more stable and therefore allow it to grow taller and more quickly than if they did not possess them. They also allow the palm to invest less biomass in underground roots than other palms, therefore leaving more energy to be used in growing above ground. It was also thought that the roots may confer an advantage when the palm is growing on a slope, but no evidence has been found that this is the case. Iriartea ventricosa has similar roots to S. exorrhiza.
Golf players use the clock system to study the course of the ball in putting situations. The Ohio Company Office as seen in 1903 on Washington Street between Front Street and Second Street The building is a simple log structure with a gabled roof, pierced by a single chimney; one window is set into the side, and the front has space for just one window and the main entrance. Its location on a slope permits the slight exposure of the foundation on one side. Smaller elements include shutters for the windows and a pair of steps that provide access to the main entrance.
Kyelang faces the famous Kardang Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Lahaul, of the Drukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which is on a slope across the river from Keylong. Sights near Kyelang include the Kardang, Shasur, and Tayul monasteries, all within a few kilometres of Kyelang. The residence, located on a slope in the resort community of Whistler, British Columbia, is a modern take on the timber chalets local to the area. The design captures the "essential" qualities of a ski lodge, such as exposed timber beams, while dispensing with the formal and stylistic constraints associated with this typology. The visual mass of the building is broken up by the illusion that a significant section of it is below grade. This effect was achieved by carefully blasting away at the bedrock to create a sort of basin around the building.
The fountains and canal system were built so well that they would, after a few minor repairs, still work today. To go along with the Incas' advanced water supply system, an equally impressive drainage system was built as well. Machu Picchu contains nearly 130 outlets in the center that moved the water out of the city through walls and other structures. The agriculture terraces are a feature of the complicated drainage system; the steppes helped avoid erosion and were built on a slope to aimed excess water into channels that ran alongside the stairways.
Collins Place, 2009 Collins Place is a two-and-a-half storeyed rendered brick building with pitched corrugated iron roofs situated on a slope which falls away from the adjacent Southbank railway station (formerly Vulture Street railway station). Fronting Grey Street at its south- eastern end, Collins Place currently stands without immediate neighbours on either side. The building is L-shaped, with a service wing to the rear, and has verandahs on three sides to two levels. It has a hipped roof linking to a gabled roof running over the service wing.
St Mary the Virgin is a 13th-century Anglican parish church in Northolt, Middlesex. It is on a slope shared with Belvue Park, the site of a 15th- century manor house -- both overlooked the old village of Northolt. It is one of Middlesex's smallest churches, its nave measuring by . The church was built around 1290 and was expanded over the centuries, with the chancel being added in 1521, the spired bell tower in the 16th century, and a gallery at the west end of the church in 1703.
The entrance to the Memorial Mound The Memorial Mound is on a slope and was erected in 1925 to commemorate Danish immigration to America. In the 1920s, Danish-Americans in the United States conceived the idea to erect a memorial in Copenhagen as a counterpoint to the traditions surrounding Rebild Hills celebrations in Jutland. A committee of Danish-Americans was set up which charged the sculptor Anders Bundgaard with the commission. After prolonged discussions, it was ultimately decided that the monument should be a mound, with an embellished inner chamber, placed in Søndermarken.
The McMillan Plan has since been instrumental in the further development of Washington, D.C. (See: History of Washington, D.C. in the 20th century). At the instigation of a French ambassador to the United States, Jean Jules Jusserand, L'Enfant's adopted nation then recognized his contributions. In 1909, L'Enfant's remains were exhumed from their burial site at Green Hill and placed in a metal-lined casket. After lying in state at the Capitol rotunda, L'Enfant was re-interred in front of Arlington House on a slope in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
The house was once described as "a small neo-baroque castle and one of the most beautiful monuments of this type in Serbia." It sits on a slope, with a base of 30 metres, with the street side of the building on high ground, and the back of the house is two floors, with the access to the garden. The courtyard facade was accentuated by a curved double flight of stairs descending from a semi-circular terrace. Based on the architectural composition, internal disposition, artistic shape and craftsmanship, it is among Ilkić's best works.
Cory Hall, the electrical engineering building, was the site of two attacks by the Unabomber in 1982 and 1985. Its neighbor, Soda Hall (computer science), is one of the few classroom buildings on campus with showers. It was completed in August 1994 at the cost of $35.5 million, raised entirely from private gifts. Dwinelle Hall is another large building on campus; its rooms are strangely numbered both because Dwinelle Hall was built with entrances on different levels on a slope and because its expansions were numbered differently from the original building.
Wanne is a residential area in the northern outskirts of the city of Tübingen, Germany. Beyond Wanne extends the vast state nature protection area of the Schönbuch. It is situated on a slope facing south and is very popular with people working at the Morgenstelle, a large complex of university buildings on the opposite slope, or at the cluster of university hospitals that extend further south of these buildings. Wanne is popular as a residential area because of its vicinity to the nature reserve, its elevation and southern exposure.
The two were permanently re-merged in 1878, together with part of the Magdalen trust, to form the Hastings Grammar School Foundation. A Victorian Gothic Revival building was constructed by John Howell & Son to the design of Jeffery & Skiller on a slope overlooking Hastings, at Standen's High Field which became Nelson road, and occupied in July 1883. The school was originally designed as a central tower with wings either side. Owing to lack of funds, the wing intended as accommodation for the headmaster and boarders was never built.
Located north of Kinnaird in the centre of the parish, Pitmiddle "was once a thriving hilltop community and home to several hundred people",The Courier, 11 April 2020, pp. 22 & 23 but its remote location eventually led to its abandonment. The hills referenced are the Braes of the Carse, which reach heights of around ."Pitmiddle Village and Elcho Nunnery - Research and Excavation on Tayside" - Perthshire Society of Natural Science (1988) The location is on a slope overlooking the River Tay, but sheltered from the south by Guardswell Hill and to the north by Pitmiddle Hill, which rises to over .
This olive tree on the Greek island of Ithaca is believed to be more than 1500 years old. On a slope of Mount Maenalus in Arcadia is an olive grove that grows around a marble tomb and the ruin of an old villa. There, one gigantic tree resembles a frighteningly distorted man, and the roots of the tree have shifted the blocks of the tomb. The narrator explains that the beekeeper who lives next door told him a story about the tree: Two renowned sculptors, Kalos and Musides, lived in the colonnaded villa, which was "resplendent" in its day.
The Markham House stands in a rural setting west of the village center of Dublin, on the west side of Snow Hill Road a short way south of its junction with Main Street (New Hampshire Route 101). It is set in a small clearing on a slope with west-facing views of nearby Dublin Pond. It is a three story frame structure, with a gambrel roof and shingled exterior. The roof hangs over a recessed porch on the ground floor, and its steep west face has a long shed-roof dormer whose windows are topped by shallow gables.
The first mention of the Saxon noble Adalbert of Haimar, Count of Wernigerode, in an 1121 deed is also the first documentation of the settlement, which had been founded about a century earlier in connection with the deforestation of the area. The counts built the castle on a slope south of the town as their residence; it was first mentioned as a castrum in 1213. When the line became extinct in 1429, the Wernigerode lands were inherited by the neighbouring County of Stolberg. The castle became the seat of the subordinate Amt administration and was put in pledge several times.
An inclined elevator consists of one or two inclined tracks on a slope with a single car on each carrying payload. In the case of a two-track configuration each car operates in a shuttle principle: it moves up and down on its own track independently of the other car. A car is either winched up to the station on the top of the incline where the cable is collected on a winch drum. Alternatively a car is balanced by a counterweight moving along the track in the opposite direction, quite similar to an ordinary lift.
Although not apparent today, Beeley Wood was once an area of industry with mining and quarrying taking place. Ganister was the material that was mined; this is a type of hard sandstone used in the manufacture of silica bricks used to line industrial furnaces. The Drift mining method was used because of the slope of the land in Beeley Wood and the mines went into the hillside for a long way and to a great depth. The fact that the wood is on a slope enabled gravity trackways to be used to transport the Ganister down to the valley bottom.
Jalan Bukit Tujuh (Seven Hill Road) is an infamous short strip of road along the route from Merapoh in the state of Pahang to Gua Musang in the state of Kelantan. The strip which is in the state of Pahang, lies on a slope with a very high inclination angle. It is on this strip that two saddening incidents happened in the 1980s; the road laden with travelers returning for the festive season collapsed suddenly, taking along a few vehicles. Rescue was difficult since the strip is secluded, the nearest residential area were very far away.

The race itself involves a team of five: Emma and four "mourners", all costumed, who have to push their coffin 195 yards to the finish.
The part of the tail closest to the body was kept off the ground, whereas the end further away from the body made contact with the ground. The fact that the animal rested on a slope is what enabled it to bring both hands to the ground close to the feet. After resting, the dinosaur shuffled forwards, and left new impressions with its feet, metatarsals, and ischium, but not the hands. The right foot now stepped on the print of the right hand, and the second claw of the left foot made a drag mark from the first resting position to the next.
Then the market square was planned on a slope and the town hall was constructed. Most of the Gothic architecture was preserved and the town is now considered one of the classical examples of mediaeval architecture. Fradique The sarcophagus of Esteves da Gata The monastery is located in an urban square, on a slope, but outside the medieval burg, alongside the Cross of São Francisco. The long rectangular plan, includes a transept in the form of a Latin cross with the remains of the primitive church framed in polygonal apses in the south. Not only are the rear arches, nor the tops, are sculpted, suggesting that the areas were covered in Arcosolium. Its square front is divided in two flights, topped by undulating triangular frontispiece of cornices.
Despite the land being on a slope, and quite restricted in dimensions (there is a railway line on the northern boundary), 50 Squadron moved in entirely on 8 February 1918, and soon standardised on the S.E.5A fighter. With the creation of the Royal Air Force on 1 April, the Squadron's duties expanded at what was now RAF Bekesbourne, and it upgraded its tents and temporary buildings. The S.E.5A aircraft were found to take too long to warm up, and during August were replaced by 24 Sopwith Camels. By September 1918 two Belfast Truss hangars hade been completed, along with other buildings.
There are natural obstacles on both sides that narrow down towards the English. The battle (like Crècy) takes place on a slope going to the English. Before the battle Henry under the guise of 'John Swan' speaks with the men, Hook realises that it is indeed the king after noticing his distinctive scar and tells 'John Swan' that the king claims to be a religious man but is a sinner for killing an innocent man, Michael. In the right-hand ground floor of the building were waiting rooms I, II. and III. class. There were also water cranes that took water directly from the Jihlava river or a depot for the locomotives and wagons owned by the Austrian Northwest Railroad. In the adjoining buildings of the waterworks there was an office of a track officer, a smith, a trackside workers' shelter and an oil store. Jihlava railway station was erected on a slope north of the city center from the ÖNWB's decision, this distant location was then widely criticized by residents and representatives of the town hall.
145 It was occupied between the 1st and 4th centuries AD, and Roman artefacts were also found there. It was badly mutilated in the early 20th century by British Israelites searching for the Ark of the Covenant. The other round enclosures are Ráth Laoghaire (Laoghaire's Fort, where the eponymous king is said to have been buried) at the southern edge of the hill, and the Claonfhearta (Sloping Trenches or Sloping Graves) at the northwestern edge, which includes Ráth Gráinne and Ráth Chaelchon. The Claonfhearta are burial mounds with ring ditches around them which sit on a slope.
The original factory was located in the Fall Creek neighborhood of the city, on a slope later known as Gun Hill, where the nearby waterfall supplied the main source of energy for the plant. In later years, the company came under criticism regarding environmental pollution of Fall Creek, especially by lead, which led to a Superfund remediation effort. Various plans to demolish the derelict plant and to redevelop the land failed over the years due to the cost of remediation and community objection to construction proposals. The factory was condemned in March 2006 and only the smokestack remains.
In the 1960s, the property, which had been vacant for decades, was made into a city park first called Bayview Terrace Park, then Parque Culiacan; in 2006, the Manhattan Beach City Council decided to rename the park, "commemorating our community's understanding that friendship, goodwill and respect for all begins within our own boundaries and extends to the world community. All are welcome." It was ceremoniously renamed in March 2007 during an event exhibiting "a deep tide of goodwill." The park is on a slope overlooking the ocean and includes rolling grassy terraces with benches and small trees.
More recently slope stability radar technology has been employed, particularly in the mining industry, to gather real time data and assist in determining the likelihood of slope failure. Figure 2: Real life landslide on a slope Real life failures in naturally deposited mixed soils are not necessarily circular, but prior to computers, it was far easier to analyse such a simplified geometry. Nevertheless, failures in 'pure' clay can be quite close to circular. Such slips often occur after a period of heavy rain, when the pore water pressure at the slip surface increases, reducing the effective normal stress and thus diminishing the restraining friction along the slip line.
The site of Novae is situated on the southern bank of the Danube at Pametnicite near Svishtov (a memorial site where the Russian army entered Bulgaria during the Turkish- Russian war in 1877) or Stǎklen (a place rich in glass – Bulg. stǎklo), as many ancient glass fragments are visible on the site (the production of glass is attested in late Roman Novae). The castrum legionis covering an area of 18 hectares is situated on a slope with its lowest point at the river-bank and its highest point 30m higher in the southern part of the site. Its topography resulted in terraced levels within the defensive walls.

Long Meg and Her Daughters, the largest example of Alexander Thom's Type B Flattened Circle The archaeologist and stone circle specialist Aubrey Burl noted that the stone circle builders would have had to undertake "careful planning" before they erected these monuments. There was much that they had to take into consideration: the choice of location, the size of the ring, the transport of the heavy stones, the laying out of the circle or ellipse, and the preparation of stone holes. They may have also had to plot astronomical alignments, making the task more difficult. Most stone circles were constructed upon flat ground, although some were instead built on a slope.
Some of the facades of the houses were retained and form an interesting part of the centre's atrium. The centre is laid out across two levels, with escalators connecting them at the North West entrance and escalators and glass lifts connecting them in the atrium, at the South of the centre. Unlike most of its contemporaries, the Marlands Shopping Centre does not contain a car park of any kind – the designated car park for the centre is accessed by going through Southampton's unusual ASDA supermarket which is on a slope – you go in on the ground floor and come out on the tenth floor – and across a bridge.
A gravity railroad (American English) or gravity railway (British English) is a railroad on a slope that allows cars carrying minerals or passengers to coast down the slope by the force of gravity alone. The speed of the cars is controlled by a braking mechanism on one or more cars on the train. The cars are then hauled back up the slope using animal power, a locomotive or a stationary engine and a cable, a chain or one or more wide, flat iron bands. A much later example in California used steam engines to pull gravity cars back to the summit of Mt. Tamalpais.
Runder Berg is a mountain of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The round mountain in Bad Urach is an oval hill (711 m above sea level) in the Swabian Alb, which is up stands about 250 meters above the valley and through a narrow saddle with the Alb plateau. On about 0.45 hectare plateau several prehistoric and hilltop settlements in particular the castle a small Alemanni king in the 4th and 5th centuries were, (see Alamannic hillfort). After numerous stray finds were made famous by the Round Mountain since 1932, extensive excavations were carried out on the entire mountain and on a terrace on a slope 1967–1984.
In the civil war it sided with Pompey and consequently lost its privileges and autonomy in 47 B.C. when it was reduced to the rank of an oppidum civium Romanorum and was dependent on the newly founded colony at Salona. As a polis Issa minted its own money, and these coins of many types had wide circulation. The town, situated on a slope on the W side of a large bay, was defended by strong Hellenistic walls, still visible in an irregular quadrangle (265 x 360 m) that enclosed an area of 9.8 ha. The street grid and foundations of houses have been found.
The attractively laid-out castle gardens have been continuously planted and tended since 1985. Below the castle is found a nature play area on both sides of a brook. A ford with stepping stones, a forumlike playing and gathering place on a slope, made out of mighty stone blocks, wooden footbridges over wetlands left in their natural state, playing houses, a suspension bridge and a monorail are the great attractions not only for children, but also for adults. Haus des wild- und rheingräflichen Verwalters der Burg Dhronecken The “House of the Wild- and Rhine-Comital Administrator of Castle Dhronecken” was, as shown by dendrological analysis, built in the Baroque style.
Grobišče talcev v Dragi, Partizanski spomeniki, Geopedia. Immediately after the Second World War, six known mass graves were created as a result of executions by the communists. The Krpin Gravel Pit 1 and 2 mass graves () are located north of the settlement; the first is in the bushes a few meters above the paved road, between a gravel pit and a dirt road, and the second is a few dozen meters higher, on a slope to the left of the path. The graves contain the remains of at least 20 Russian Liberation Army prisoners of war and civilians that were murdered at the end of June or beginning of July 1945.
Instrumentation for this spacecraft was similar to that of the previous Surveyors and included landing legs, a Vernier propulsion system, and numerous engineering sensors. An alpha-scattering instrument was installed in place of the surface sampler, and a small bar magnet attached to one footpad was included to detect the presence of magnetic material in the lunar soil. The spacecraft landed at 00:46:44 UT on September 11, 1967 (7:46 p.m. EST September 10) in Mare Tranquillitatis, at 1.41° N latitude and 23.18° E longitude (selenographic coordinates), within the rimless edge of a small crater on a slope of about 20 deg.
To the left of the central block is the former refectory and accommodation block which is a three storey building of five bays including an attic story with gabled dormer windows. A basement level was below as the building stands on a slope. The former chapel block forms the other wing and was also of two storeys and five bays with buttressed walls, the chapel was on the upper floor with the library and the warden's office on the ground floor. Both the chapel range and the accommodation range have wings going off them to form the overall U-shape in the same style.
The addorsed archway between tower and buildings The tower is situated in middle of the city, implanted on a slope. The principal facade is oriented to the Largo D. Pedro V', laterally to the access ramp of Terreiro da Sé. Perpendicular to the northern facade of the tower is a residential building, addorsed to it on the other side is the Arco de São Sebastião (St. Sebastian Arch), consisting of two arches with central column. To the north and west are residential and commercial buildings of three- to four-storeys, and to the east the group that includes the Sé Cathedral and Episcopal Palace.
"Canopy Tourism", page 37Jacques Marais, Lisa De Speville, Adventure Racing, Publisher Human Kinetics, 2004, , 9780736059114, 160 pages, page 156 is a pulley suspended on a cable, usually made of stainless steel, mounted on a slope. It is designed to enable cargo or a person propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable by holding on to or being attached to the freely moving pulley. It has been described as essentially a Tyrolean traverse that engages gravity to assist its speed of movement. Its use is not confined to adventure sport, recreation, or tourism although modern-day usage tends to favor those meanings.
The size of the site, and the fact that it was built on a slope which needed to be partially leveled, indicates that it required a great amount of labor to construct, and that its construction took a long period of time. In addition to the stone circles, the site includes pit dwellings, and middens . More than 100 earth pit tombs (both burrows and burial burial tombs) containing pottery coffins and grave goods with strong religious connections, such as miniature pottery and clay animal and human- shaped figures have been found on the gentle slope on the east side adjacent to the ring-shaped stones.
South-west of the "Agios Herakleidios" monastery, a tomb belonging to the Middle Bronze era was dug up in 1963. Yet another tomb from the latter part of the Bronze Age was excavated south-east of the monastery, in the region between the present-day nunnery and the Lambertes barrow. The Archaic era cemetery is located south-west of the village, between the region's two rivers, of which one is the torrential Pediaios, which waters most of Nicosia District and particularly the fertile (and now North Cyprus) area of Mesaoria. The Hellenistic/Roman cemetery is found on a slope north-west of Politiko, where the "Agios Mnason" monastery once existed.
So Mark assembled a committee of the VCA to locate a new material. Loffelstein, or Loffel Block, was identified by a VCA site committee member Andy Shores as possibly meeting those goals. It allowed plants to grow inside the material, could be placed on a slope to allow birds and wildlife to climb out of the canals, was safe for small children as it allowed them to hold on to the sides, and or climb out of the Canals, and was lower cost than the Armorflex. Mark obtain the services of a local architect to help present an artist rendering of the Loffel Block plan.
Old Jack, too weak by now, remains attached, and Maya stays to try and free him while the others chase the flock of gulls that have landed nearby. Maya realizes Old Jack has given up, and she reluctantly leaves him behind when he shows no sign of wanting to leave the base. Maya joins up with the other dogs, and they all work together to attack the gulls and manage to kill a few, getting their first food in two weeks. After nearly two months on their own, having kept their strength up and still traveling, the dogs rest on a slope one night under the southern lights.
The hamlet of Nemci In addition to the village center, Orehek contains the hamlets and isolated farmsteads of Gradež, Nemci, Zabrežnica, Mlinar, Abram, and Androjne. Orehek lies on a slope below Mount Kojca and Jesenica Creek flows through the village. The soil is sandy and marly, and there are tilled fields on very steep slopes, which traditionally necessitated carrying the soil from the last plowed furrow to the top of the field. Below the village there are tilled fields and meadows in the area known as Dovšca, and above the road there are low-quality hay fields in the area known as Pod Kojca (literally, 'below Mount Kojca').
246x246px Regents Hill features the university's only Japanese- influenced garden. Tucked behind McGregor Hall on a slope, a small, informal landscape of trees, shrubs, moss, stone pathways, and a small pond suggests the architect's travels to Asia in 1934 and his awareness of the Japanese work of Czech-American architect Antonin Raymond. An open, metal sculpture, built with the original design, still stands and adds to the overall effect. Several large rocks are scattered loosely about the landscape, yet their seemingly random placement might have been intentional to reveal the connections between eastern and western cultures; broadly suggestive of Washington state's geography on the Pacific Rim.
Immediately after the station, the line runs over the long and high Wiesen Viaduct, which is Rhaetian Railway's largest stone bridge. The line then traverses the remaining section to the Filisur station, far above the deep Landwasser gorge on a slope. A total of 14 tunnels with a total length of 4,200 metres and 28 bridges are passed between Davos Platz and Filisur, which makes the line technically extremely interesting, not least because of the famous Wiesen Viaduct. Immediately south of the Wiesen Viaduct there is also a Hipp turning disk (Wendescheibe) at the edge of the track, which, however, is no longer used as a railway signal for rail operations.
However, there are safe zones above sandstone beds, most notably the Connelsville Sandstone that outcrops high on the hillsides. The old Athens Mental Hospital grounds (now part of the university) was built on the top of a hillside in the late 1860s, and is completely stable due to its position atop the hill rather than on a slope. The recent University Courtyard Apartments is also built on similar underlying geology across a small valley, but the hilltop was extensively removed in order to create a stable base. The city receives all its water supply from wells in unconsolidated river aquifers, and is reputed to be the largest city in the United States to do so.
The museum, designed by Alvar Aalto and completed in 1973, is located on a slope which lies next to Lake Jyväsjärvi. Together with the Museum of Central Finland (Alvar Aalto, 1961), these buildings form a cultural centre in the immediate vicinity of the University of Jyväskylä (Alvar Aalto, 1951–71). Both museums represent Aalto's "white period". The ten years' difference in the design of the buildings can be seen especially in the façades — the façade of the Museum of Central Finland, rising from a slope of a hill, shows the geometric practicality of early functionalism, whereas the Aalto Museum is more closed in, but at the same time more free in its form.
The club was located on Crown Street in Bolton and was on the top floors of an old mill warehouse building. From the street front, the building had three floors but the warehouse was built on a slope so the rear had eight floors looking out on to the River Croal which at this point ran in a brick-lined channel. The club was opened in December 1960 by Stanley Wilcock, who rented the building, using the lower floors for his business, making kitchen furniture. In March 1961, Wilcock sold his interest in the nightclub which occupied the top two floors of the warehouse to two Manchester businessmen; Denis Wilson and Richard Sorrensen.
Richard Perez-Pena, "Highway Plan for West Side Appears Dead," The New York Times, July 26, 1995. Nevertheless, planning proceeded, albeit in fits and starts. Approved by the Federal Highway Administration in 2001, the highway plan called for relocating the elevated highway to the grade of the rail yard east of the present alignment, constructing supports for Riverside Boulevard in the form of a tunnel that would enclose the highway's northbound lanes, with the future park beginning above an adjacent tunnel enclosing the southbound lanes and continuing on a slope down to the waterfront. The exit ramp was subsequently closed and, in June 2006, the developer began construction of the northbound tunnel between 61st and 65th Streets.
In addition, six electromagnetic track brakes are provided; on the Muni cars, the track brakes are controlled independently to hold the car in place when starting on a slope, and on the MBTA cars, the track brakes are blended into the main brakes. Dynamic braking was enabled by using a separate power source to energize the field coils on the traction motors; Boeing stated that regenerative braking was possible. Although regenerative braking was not implemented on the SLRV, it was enabled on the similar CLRV. MBTA #3424 at Seashore Trolley Museum (2017), as rebuilt in 1997 to add roof-mounted air conditioning units on each end and bifold doors (3 per side).
Rendering of a drum brake Drum brakes are typically described as either leading/trailing (also called "single leading") or twin leading. Rear drum brakes are typically of a leading/trailing design (for non-servo systems), or primary/secondary (for duo servo systems), the shoes being moved by a single double-acting hydraulic cylinder and hinged at the same point. In this design, one of the brake shoes always experiences the self-applying effect, irrespective of whether the vehicle is moving forwards or backwards. This is particularly useful on the rear brakes, where the parking brake (handbrake or footbrake) must exert enough force to stop the vehicle from traveling backwards and hold it on a slope.
The Reverberatory Incinerator was an Australian patent which achieved a much higher efficiency than its imported competitors by preheating and partly drying the refuse while it moved down a sloping, vibrating grate in the combustion chamber which itself was designed to reflect (reverberate) heat on to the incoming refuse. The function of the building dictates the location on a slope or embankment as it is an in-line, vertical "top gravity feed" process. The gravitation of the raw refuse from storage hoppers down to the combustion chamber, the ash pit, and the ash delivery hoppers required truck access on at least two levels, presenting problems of siting and the design of site works, at which Griffin was most adept.
East of the town, within the Drava Valley lies the village of Molzbichl, which is home to the remains of Carinthia's first monastery, established about 780 by Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria and abandoned in the 10th century. A small museum nearby shows several artifacts of Carolingian origin. The foundation of the monastery church is visible south of the present parish church Saint Tiburtius, which itself has an altar including a Roman tombstone of an Early Christian deacon Nonnosus, who died here in 532. On a slope above the valley, northeast of Molzbichl is Schloss Rothenthurn, in the 11th century called "Red Tower" (Roter Turm), a fiefdom of the Counts of Ortenburg.
Wind throw is the toppling of a tree due to the force of the wind, this exposes the root plate and adjacent soil beneath the tree and influences slope stability. The Courtyard Shopping Centre has an entrance close to the midpoint of Letterkenny's Main Street. Located in central Letterkenny, close to the Library and Arts Centre on the Lower Main Street side and the Bank of Ireland on the Upper Main Street side, it also overlooks Pearse Street and Oliver Plunkett Street. The structure is built spirally on a slope so, if approached from the Main Street entrance, the visitor, when making their way through the complex, descends into the ground via a series of escalators. Letterkenny's oldest Eason's bookstore and Heatons, the department store in which billionaire retail entrepreneur and Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has a 50% stake, are among the outlets to be found inside.
The Jammu region, one of the two regions of UT of Jammu and Kashmir (the other being the Kashmir Valley), is bound on the north by the Pir Panjal Range of the middle Himalayas, in the south by Punjab, to the east by Ladakh, and close to the west by Pakistan. The lower Himalayan ranges begin behind the town of Jammu, which rests on a slope over above sea level, overlooking and commanding the plain watered by the Chenab, Ravi, Tawi and Ujh rivers. The Jammu region consists of ten districts: Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Poonch, Kishtwar, Reasi, Samba, Ramban and Rajouri. The city of Jammu is the winter capital of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
In 1913 a Brisbane Courier report gave details of the camp, then named Tambourine Camp, describing its location, "The site of the camp is practically the same as in former years, namely, on a slope overlooking the Albert River and Mundoolun Homestead,". The report notes the suitability of the site due to the quality of water from the Albert River at Mundoolun for drinking, washing, and swimming. One member of the Collins family, Douglas Martin Fraser (1888–1968), served with the 5th Light Horse Regiment in Palestine during 1918. Fraser had married Marion Dorothea Jane, daughter of Robert Collins, in 1915 and it was on the Collins's property at Mundoolun where their first home was built.
At 10:20 a.m. on 7 October 1942, two Royal Marines named William Moore and Geoffrey Cooke, patrolling a section of Hankley Common known as Houndown Wood on a routine military exercise, passed a high mound of earth which had been purposely bulldozed to simulate training upon rough terrain for tank crews. Protruding through the soil of a freshly dug patch of earth on a slope, Moore observed what appeared to be an exposed human arm. Looking closer at the hand of this exposed limb, he further noted that the flesh upon two of the fingers and the thumb had been gnawed away by rats or other vermin, and that a foot also protruded from the earth.
Optical superposition eyes are constrained to a spherical shape, but other forms of compound eyes may deform to a shape where more ommatidia are aligned to, say, the horizon, without altering the size or density of individual ommatidia. Eyes of horizon-scanning organisms have stalks so they can be easily aligned to the horizon when this is inclined, for example, if the animal is on a slope. An extension of this concept is that the eyes of predators typically have a zone of very acute vision at their centre, to assist in the identification of prey. In deep water organisms, it may not be the centre of the eye that is enlarged.
The construction for the 5,960 square meter (64,153 square feet), four-story building began the summer of 2009. The building officially opened on November 1, 2011. The “stacked box” design building is built on a slope on the outer campus Drive Ring. The building was originally planned to have a steel structural framing but because of rising steel prices the structural framing had to be switched to concrete for the final design development. The lower cost of concrete framing meant that the custom stainless steel “skin” could be developed within the University of Toronto's budget requirements. The building's exterior had two “skins,” the main “skin” is insulated and waterproof while the separate exterior steel panel “skin” reflected heat.
A typical residence, emphasis on the stepped Bermudian roof, used for rainwater collection The archetypical Bermuda house is a low, squared building with a stepped, white roof and pastel-painted walls, both of which are made out of stone. Between roof and wall are a series of eaves painted a third colour, which is also used on the wooden shutters of relatively small windows. Often built on a slope, there is a set of stairs, wider at the base than at the top, leading up to a porch or veranda around the front door. Rare embellishments include a brick pattern down the corners of the building, and narrow moulding to highlight features such as windows.

Augustus, too, ordered the building of a temple, dedicated to Mars. On a slope of the Quirinal were the extensive gardens of Sallust.
The site slopes downward to the south, with the Wall Street side being slightly lower than the northern portion of the lot. As such, the Wall Street side is at the same elevation as the lobby on the 1st floor (which was designed like a basement), while the banking room on the second floor is slightly higher than William Street. This positioning probably reflected bank architect Alfred Hopkins's advice that a bank on a slope allowed "a better view of the bank's interior" and that a partially-above- ground basement provided better ventilation for the departments housed there. Immediately outside the building's southeastern corner is the entrance for the Wall Street station on the New York City Subway's Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line (served by the ).
Based on public meetings and city polling it was clear that the Armorflex plan would not be approved by the property owners and the project would fail again. Mark Galanty assembled a committee of the VCA to locate a compromise design and material. Loffelstein, or Loffel Block, was identified by a VCA committee member Andy Shores as possibly meeting those goals. It allowed plants to grow inside the material, could be placed on a slope to allow birds and wildlife to climb out of the canals, was safe for small children as it allowed them to hold on to the sides, and or climb out of the Canals, was lower cost project over the Armorflex design, and was aesthetically pleasing to the property owners.
In 1875 a "Gentlemen's" waiting room was provided and a general waiting room was built next to the "Ladies" waiting room on the Manchester platform. Work costing £17,000 to rebuild the station began in March 1896 and was expected to be finished in summer 1897 but the station was not officially reopened until 1 April 1898. The booking and parcels offices were built at the top of a new approach road on a slope up from the junction of Princess Street and East Bond Street. From the booking office at the top of the slope, covered walkway ramps accessed the platforms which were widened and provided with an ironwork canopy over both platforms and four waiting rooms on each side.

Ribnjak is situated on the slope hills between the Mišeluk and Trandžament neighborhoods in the east, the river Danube in the west, Sremska Kamenica in the south, and the Petrovaradin fortress in the north. Because the neighborhood is located on a slope, this area is subject to landslides, but they are not severe and are very slow in progress. There are two main roads in the neighborhood, the Lower and Upper Ribnjak Roads.
Designed by the English architect Sir Reginald Blomfield and administered by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension is on a slope to the northeast of Abbeville, at the end of Allée Du Souvenir Francais. The Abbeville Communal Cemetery is on the same road, but slightly to the south and lower down on the slope; its northern side forms the south side of the Extension. The entrances to the Extension are along the side shared with the Abbeville Communal Cemetery but it may also be entered from the Allée Du Souvenir Francais. A Cross of Sacrifice is centrally located in the northern portion of the cemetery while a Stone of Remembrance is positioned close to the eastern wall.
The TSB found that MMA's operating plan was to leave the train parked on the main line, unattended, with an unlocked locomotive cab, alongside a public highway where it was accessible to the general public, with no additional protection. However, there were no rules against leaving a train unlocked, running and unattended, even if it contained dangerous materials and was stopped on the main line, on a slope, in the vicinity of a residential area. After finishing his work, Harding departed by taxi for a local hotel, l'Eau Berge in downtown Lac-Mégantic, for the night. En route, the engineer told the taxi driver that he felt unsafe leaving a locomotive running while it was spitting oil and thick, black smoke.
For example, because of sun and wind factors, the entrances to bath-houses in Anatolia were made on the south or east sides, but here the situation is different, the entrances are on the west and north-west sides. Also there are not clear traces of a water supply and heating system and in this situation the building rather looks like the lower part of a huge building that bore a massive structure above on its strong arches. Also because of the slope of the area on which it is constructed, the arches provide a solution so that the complex looks like the foundations for a building on a slope. For instance at Pergamon the same remedy was used for the Trajaneum.
View of the houses of Paranapiacaba The village is located on a slope opposite Santo André, approximately by road southeast of the centre of the city of São Paulo, and about east of Rio Grande da Serra. The industrial complex, larger than the village itself, however, lies just several kilometres to the southeast of Rio Grande da Serra. The village is located amidst the Serra do Mar coastal forests, in the south coast, at the highest point of the area, and hence it came to be known as “a place to view the sea” in Tupi-Guarani language. The Mata Atlantica around the town provides ample opportunities for hiking into the forest of the Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar where orchids and bromelias are major attractions.
This jump also stirred controversy among BASE jumpers who pointed out that Baumgartner cited the height of the statue as the height of the jump even though he landed on a slope below the statue's feet, and that other BASE jumpers had previously jumped from the statue but avoided publicity.Abrams, p. 249. He became the first person to BASE jump from the completed Millau Viaduct in France on 27 June 2004Millau Viaduct and the first person to skydive onto, then BASE jump from, the Turning Torso building in Malmö, Sweden, on 18 August 2006. On 12 December 2007, he became the first person to jump from the 91st floor observation deck of the then-tallest completed building in the world, Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan.
Geoglyphs on deforested land in the Amazon rainforest A geoglyph is a large design or motif (generally longer than 4 metres) produced on the ground and typically formed by clastic rocks or similarly durable elements of the landscape, such as stones, stone fragments, gravel, or earth. A positive geoglyph is formed by the arrangement and alignment of materials on the ground in a manner akin to petroforms, while a negative geoglyph is formed by removing part of the natural ground surface to create differently coloured or textured ground in a manner akin to petroglyphs. Geoglyphs are generally a type of land art, and sometimes rock art. A hill figure is created on a slope, so that it can be seen from a distance.
She joined the board of Surf des Neiges Québec (Québec Snowboarding Association) and was their Director of Marketing between 1993 and 1995. She commissioned her brother to create the association's first logo (which he did pro-bono), developed its first media kit, actively promoted the sport in the province and was able to double sponsorship revenues to help grow the association's grass roots and competitive programs. In November 1993, Surf des Neiges Québec participated in the Super Salon de Sport et Plein Air (now known as 'Le Salon National du Grand Air'), which showcased the sport to over 70,000 visitors through live snowboarding demonstrations performed on a slope of snow that was created in the Montreal Olympic Stadium's stands. While actively competing in snowboarding, she also played for the Concordia Stingers in 1994–1995.
St Peter's Church, designed by James Brooks and built by John Howell Jnr, 1883−1885 John Howell Junior was the engineer of the previous Gothic Revival building for Hastings Grammar School (pictured above), designed by Jeffery and Skiller of Havelock Road, Hastings. The foundation stone was laid on 15 September 1882, and the first section was opened on 4 July 1883. It was built on a slope using Kentish ragstone and Bath Stone dressings, and shortage of funds meant that it had to be built in stages. In the first stage the building contained a large schoolroom with "a raised platform at one end and a gallery at the other; four adjoining classrooms; above, space not yet used as part of the second section; below, a covered playground".
Maer is a rural village and civil parish in the Borough of Newcastle-under- Lyme, Staffordshire, England, to the west of the pottery manufacturing town of Stoke-on-Trent. Its main feature is the large 17th-century stone-built country house, Maer Hall, built on a slope above a small lake, or "mere", which gave the house and estate its name. The Hall became the home of Josiah Wedgwood II and was frequently visited by his nephew Charles Darwin, who went on to marry Josiah's daughter Emma at St. Peter's Church, which stands higher on the hillside, close to the Hall.
