Cullen's poetry derives from his mixed South American and British heritage. He spent long periods immersed in rave culture, particularly Oldschool jungle. When he lived in Bristol he would MC to Drum and bass and Reggae, and become friends with Roni Size labelmate MC Tali. He would frequently return to Argentina, on trips to document Cumbia Villera and other subgenres.

Nowadays the difference between jungle (or oldschool jungle) and drum and bass is a common debate within the junglist community. There is no universally accepted semantic distinction between the terms "jungle" and "drum and bass". Some associate "jungle" with older material from the first half of the 1990s (sometimes referred to as "jungle techno"), and see drum and bass as essentially succeeding jungle. Others use jungle as a shorthand for ragga jungle, a specific subgenre within the broader realm of drum and bass.

Us and Them is the fifth studio album by English band Godflesh. It was released through Earache Records on 17 May 1999 in Europe and on 8 June 1999 in North America. As with Godflesh's 1997 remix album Love and Hate in Dub, Us and Them is influenced by breakbeats, drum and bass, oldschool jungle, trip hop and hip hop. Shortly after Us and Them's release, Godflesh frontman Justin Broadrick admitted that he "hated" the album as it was the expression of an "identity crisis".

MIDIval Punditz is an Indian fusion group consisting of two Delhi-based musicians, Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj. Their style revolves mostly around bhangra, Oldschool jungle, electronica, and North Indian classical music. Their songs commonly feature traditional Indian instruments, such as the dhol, tumbi, sarod, santoor, dholak, tanpura, tabla, surbahar, swarmandal, sarangi, sitar, and bansuri, but also feature more modern instruments such as the synthesizer and drum machine. They have worked with Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Anoushka Shankar, Kailash Kher, Karsh Kale, Ustad Sultan Khan, Tabla Beat Science, Vishal Vaid, and Angaraag Mahanta (also known by his nickname Papon).

4hero's style was initially uptempo breakbeat, house and techno, and has progressed to breakbeat hardcore, oldschool jungle, and drum and bass. Comparisons have been drawn between them and East London band Shut Up and Dance, with both bands evolving in the early 1990s as a reapproachment between the breakbeat-driven African-diasporic musical structures of hip-hop and reggae, and the dark, European reconstruction of the techno sound popularized by the likes of Joey Beltram, CJ Bolland and Mundo Muzique. 4hero both embraced the dynamics of populist rave culture, and maintained an avant-garde status as innovative and experimental producers. They trailblazed genre-crossing studio techniques such as timestretching and pitch-shifting.

He was one of the pioneering MCs in the drum and bass-oldschool jungle scene. He has been credited with inventing the "Double Time" MCing style, where he would double the speed of the generic MC flow but would still fit within the bars of the music. He was the first drum and bass MC to have a major release when The Next Step was released on Island Records in 1999. He also had an album, The Legend, which was released on the independent drum and bass label Dance Concept which was produced by Benny V. These tracks gained airplay on national radio stations Kiss FM and BBC Radio 1, as well as receiving support from the underground pirate scene including Kool FM which was one of the stations he performed on regularly.
