The Hospital and Training School for Nurses was chartered by the South Carolina legislature in July 1897, and opened with 24 beds in a three-story building purchased for $4,500 (equivalent to $ in present-day terms).

When the Solomons originally arrived on Earth, Tommy, despite being the oldest of the aliens, was given the body of a teenage boy. Despite having to act like a kid all the time, Tommy's real age shines through, particularly when he plays the role of mentor to High Commander Dick, ostensibly Tommy's father while on Earth. During one episode, Tommy announces he has retired from the mission, and starts behaving like a stereotypical old man, even hanging out at the old folks' home (where he poses as one of the resident's nephews). As Information Officer, Tommy is the smartest and most Earth-savvy of the Solomons, and he is charged with gathering information about humans, mainly from television shows and films.

Lafon is mostly known for his large donations to the American Anti-Slavery Society, the Underground Railroad, the Catholic School for Indigent Orphans, the Louisiana Association for the Benefit of Colored Orphans, and other charities for both blacks and whites. In his will, he left funds to local charities and to the Charity Hospital, Lafon Old Folks Home, Dillard University, and the Sisters of the Holy Family, an order of African American nuns. The Thomy Lafon school was called "the best Negro schoolhouse in Louisiana," but it was burned down by a white mob during the New Orleans Race Riot of 1900. Lafon also supported the Tribune, the first black-owned newspaper in the South after the American Civil War.

She also became involved in political activities by participating in the Republican Party as well as beginning the Colored Citizens Protective League in Jacksonville. In 1941, she joined with A. Philip Randolph to protest job discrimination.

The Time of Their Lives is a British road comedy film directed and written by Roger Goldby and starring Joan Collins as Helen Shelley and Pauline Collins (no relation) as Priscilla. Joan Collins abandons her usual glamour to play a faded and forgotten movie star living in an old folks home in London, who determines to somehow travel to her ex-lover’s funeral in France in the hopes of staging a comeback. She coerces downtrodden housewife Priscilla (Pauline Collins) into accompanying her on the eventful journey, during which the odd duo become involved with a reclusive artist, played by Franco Nero. At the outset the selfish, egocentric, manipulative Helen seems to have little in common with the timid Priscilla, however during the course of their adventure the two women undergo life changes that bond them together.

Most of today's Sunland was annexed to the city of Los Angeles, effective August 4, 1926. Groome has recorded numerous sessions on other artists' albums, including Robert Plant (Manic Nirvana) with Rob Stride, Joan Jett (Bad Reputation), Psychic TV (Dreams Less Sweet and Godstar), IQ (Nomzamo) and Popguns with Rob Stride (Snog). He has toured the world extensively as a member of Adrian Baker's Gidea Park (occasionally with guests such as Mike Love), Nashville Teens, Mud, The Beagles (together with saxophonist-singer-songwriter Stewart Blandamer, former member of Paul Young's Q-Tips and writer of the Country song "Darlin'") and, since April 2003, The Barron Knights, having previously sequenced the drum programming on their single "Golden Oldie Old Folks Home". From 1981 to 1996 Micky performed on and off with Rob Stride in The Bleach Boys, and in 1989 Micky and Rob formed The Late Shift. During 2004–6, Groome and Stride collaborated with A Teenage Opera composer Mark Wirtz on Love Is Eggshaped, and Micky and Rob wrote and performed on their Spyderbaby album, with contributions from Tony Rivers and Kris Ife.

The show also starred Monica Zetterlund, Birgitta Andersson, Lissi Alandh, Sonya Hedenbratt, Gösta Ekman, Mille Schmidt, Stefan Böhm, Arild Eriksen, Gals and Pals and Gunnar Svenssons kvartett. The show was built up by sketches and songs, often with satirical humour. Among the more famous sketches are Flykten från Ålderdomshemmet (The escape from the Old Folks Home) in which Hans Alfredsson played a senile old man, the "Pitt" number, where Birgitta Andersson took her husband, played by Gösta Ekman, to the doctor because he couldn't stop saying the word pitt (Swedish slang for penis) and the Mahatma Ekman number, in which Gösta Ekman portrayed a kind of guru who claimed that we "have to be friends with the things" only to have every object on stage work against him in a slapstick number. The show also contained a number between Tage Danielsson and Lissi Alandh called I Friska Naturn (In The Healthy Nature) also known as Nature Morte.
