Double or pigtail buns are often called , which is also a type of Japanese dumpling (usually called dango; the o- is honorific). The term was popularized by the anime and manga series Sailor Moon, whose eponymous heroine and other characters wear their hair in this style. The term odango in Japanese can refer to any variety of bun hairstyle.

However, during special occasions such as festivals, the streets of Tokyo are filled with vendors that serve food such as odango, sashimi, oyster, and octopus.

Later in the series Haruka and Seiya, other important figures in her life, adopt the name as well. Since there is no North American equivalent to odango, the original English adaptation almost always used the phrases "meatball head" or "moon face". This hairstyle differs from the odango slightly in that it is gender neutral; Chinese paintings of children have frequently depicted girls as having matching ox horns, while boys have a single bun in the back.

Pucca has very long black hair, but usually wears it in the odango style, accompanied by red scrunchies. She is often referred to being a goddess of weather as she caused rain clouds and wind to form: either when her uncle and the Master Chefs' feuding got annoying or when Ring Ring pushed her too far by taking Garu from her, causing her to fly away when the winds got too much.

In the anime, Taiki and Yaten consider him prone to bouts of childishness (such as when he shows off his basketball skills in front of the school), but generally follow his lead. Seiya develops strong feelings for Usagi; his attempts to forge a bond with her provide the primary romantic tension of the season. Seiya calls Usagi odango, like Mamoru does. The two go on a date at an amusement park, which is interrupted when Sailor Iron Mouse attacks.

In the English version it is called "Twinkle Bell" or "Crystal Twinkle Bell". In episode 153 of the anime Chibi Moon is shown to be able to use Super Sonic Odango an attack which supersonic waves emmit out of her Odangos in time of a crisis situation or when shes completely defenseless. This allows Sailor Moon to power up and make her final blow. Furthermore, in the anime only, Sailor Chibi Moon is given the Golden Crystal, which she uses to call on the power of dreams.

The Cosplay Authority Global Challenge returned for the a third edition with notable cosplayers namely Alodia Gosiengfiao, Myrtle Sarrosa, Pion Kim, Jinbehindinfinity, Philip Odango, and Haiden Hazard serving as judges. These aspects of Sailor Moon's costume are shown in multiple pieces of early artwork, along with a gun and cloak, which were also parts of the original concept. Takeuchi would put her own hair up in odango before difficult classes or exams. She has curly, salmon colored hair that reacts strongly to humidity, appearing to move on its own in the anime, which she wears it in a double bun, odango style. She is left handed. She moved from room 203 when she started her second year in order to be next to her best friend, Sae, and is one of Sae's principal sources of support when she is involved with a deadline or other crisis. She strives to be a supportive senior to the younger girls, and due mainly to her desire to support and properly feed Sae she became a great cook by the end of her first year.

Adding in Usagi's child to the Sailor Moon storyline, as well as her name, Chibiusa for a chibi (little) Usagi, was the idea of Naoko Takeuchi's editor, Fumio Osano. Takeuchi has stated that she did not think much about how Chibiusa's hair would look, besides it having odango like Usagi's hair and being pink; and that she used a Chibiusa doll for reference on the hair. The first appearance of Chibiusa as a Sailor Soldier is in a side story, a year and a half before Sailor Chibi Moon made her debut in the manga. In the first Picture Diary, Chibiusa is rescued by Sailors Moon and Venus and dreams that night about becoming a "soldier of love and justice" herself.
