Pär Nuder grew up in Österåker, where he still resides. His father, Ants Nuder, was one of the numerous Estonian refugees who fled to Sweden to escape the Soviet invasion at the end of World War II. During his childhood, Pär Nuder spent several summers in Israel, which has resulted in a strong personal commitment to the Middle East peace process. Educated at Stockholm University, Nuder has a Bachelor of Laws degree.

On 20 October 1987 the Director General of the National Prison and Probation Administration Ulf Larsson, the State Secretary Harald Fälth, the Information Secretary at the Ministry of Justice Björn Fougelberg and the political adviser to the former minister Pär Nuder all resigned.

On 8 July 2002, Persson fell while riding his bicycle at Harpsund and broke his left clavicle. Following this accident he was unable to lift his left arm for some time and almost fainted during a speech in Almedalen on 10 July 2002 and after a meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair on 15 July 2002. Present with him during the accident was Pär Nuder, Minister of Finance, and Sten Olsson, State Secretary. Pär Nuder wrote in his book Stolt men inte nöjd ("proud but not satisfied"), released in 2008, that Persson had fallen while riding his bicycle because he was drunk after consuming large amounts of alcoholic beverages.

This impression was further strengthened by Persson's move to let Nuder join his Cabinet as Minister for Policy Coordination in 2002, an influential behind-the-scenes post. When Marita Ulvskog stepped down as Minister for Culture in September 2004 he took over the portfolio, although it was explicitly stated that this was not a long-term solution. The Prime Minister's intentions instead became public on 21 October 2004, when Göran Persson announced a restructuring of his government in which Pär Nuder was to take over as Minister of Finance after Bosse Ringholm. Responding to media questions on whether his plan was to be the next Prime Minister, he simply answered that he did not "think about it" and was concentrating on his tasks as Minister of Finance.

Nuder himself replied: "If she [Mona Sahlin] believes there is another person better suited to speak for the economic policy of Social Democracy in Sweden, then I won't hesitate to step aside for that person". He was succeeded as economic advisor for the Social Democratic party and its alternative for Finance Minister for the election in 2010 by Thomas Östros, earlier Minister of Education.

Persson said in response to these claims: "I can't exactly recapitulate the event but I can say as much that I'm surprised that Pär Nuder remembers anything". In September 2003 Persson was diagnosed with hip osteoarthritis and surgery was recommended. He chose to go through Sweden's public health-care system instead of seeking private treatment; he was put on a waiting list, and finally received a hip replacement operation in June 2004. During that 9-month period he walked with a limp and reportedly was on strong painkillers; he had to cancel several official trips due to the pain he was in.

Jan Emanuel Johansson Jan Emanuel Johansson (born 2 May 1974 in Gottsunda) is a Swedish healthcare entrepreneur, Social Democratic politician and Member of Parliament (MP) from 2002 to 2006, who also held seats in the Riksdagen as a replacement at different times (2006, 2008 and 2009). He was again MP between March 2009 and October 2010, this time as a replacement for Pär Nuder. He has sat on the Social Committee, Parliamentary Committees as well as the foreign ministry. He is reputed to be the Social Democratic MP who put forward the highest number motions during his time at the Riksdagen.

In 2008 he was appointed economic policy spokesperson for his party, following a leadership dispute between his predecessor Pär Nuder and the newly appointed party chairman Mona Sahlin; a post he was forced to resign from in March 2011, coinciding with the ascension of Håkan Juholt as chairman, a candidate he refused to endorse or publicly support. Östros left the party executive committee at about the same time, and subsequently left the Riksdag in July 2012, having spent a total of 17 years as an MP. It has often been said that former Prime Minister Göran Persson has a lot of confidence in Thomas Östros, and he was mentioned in speculations about possible successors to Persson.

The funeral was held in Katarina Church in Stockholm on 4 February 2015. It was attended by the king Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip, Stefan Löfven, Leif Johansson, Cristina Stenbeck, Pehr G. Gyllenhammar, Maud Olofsson, Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson, Annie Lööf, Hans Dalborg, Claes Dahlbäck, Helene Hellmark Knutsson, Magdalena Andersson, Mikael Damberg, Börje Ekholm, Anders Borg, Jan Carlzon, Fredrik Lundberg, Mona Sahlin, Carl-Henric Svanberg, Annika Falkengren, Leif Pagrotsky, Michael Treschow, Jan Björklund, Ulf Adelsohn, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Pär Nuder, Hans Vestberg, Göran Hägglund, Fredrik Reinfeldt, Anna Kinberg Batra, Anders Wall, Carl Bennet, Hans Stråberg and others. During the afternoon there was a special reception at the Grand Hôtel. Wallenberg was taken to his final resting place in the world's only Saab hearse, manufactured by the company that his father once was one of the founders of.
