Touhy, sensing trouble, told the trio that he was hosting a party for all his men that night at The Arch, his Schiller Park roadhouse.

However, it was 20-ton and under-powered. The weight of the initial prototype and its low speed did not impress the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Office, and a new requirement was issued for a lighter tank, with a nominal weight. The new design was modeled after the Vickers Medium C which had been bought by the Japanese Army in March 1927. By April 1928, the new light tank design was finished.
This, and the Hunt sale the previous season, did not impress the U's faithful. Bringing in 14 new players in just a season and a half proved too much of an upheaval for United. Colchester were relegated back to the Fourth Division with Franklin having already being given a year's contract extension mid-season. In 1965–66, as they did four years previously, United bounced back up from the Fourth Division at the first attempt.

Before Himilco built Tauronemium, Dionysius had permitted the Sicels to settle at Naxos, a nearby Greek city Dionysius had sacked and depopulated, an act that apparently did not impress the Sicels, and they chose to join Himilco at the first opportunity. Their past history with the Greeks may have been a reason. Naxos was the first Greek colony in Sicily, settled in 734 BC on Sicel land. From that date Sicels had been the victims of Greek aggression.
The design of the black dragon, which acted as Inuart's pact beast, did not impress Shiba, who considered cutting it from the final product. Manah's red clothing was designed to evoke both its status as the game's key color, and her status as the leader of the Cult of the Watchers. Shiba approved of the design, feeling that it contrasted nicely with Furiae's predominantly white design. Fujisaka also helped design Furiae's monster form for the game's second ending.

Bell Aerosystems began development of a rocket pack which it called the "Bell Rocket Belt" or "man-rocket" for the US Army in the mid 1950s. It was demonstrated in 1961 but 5 gallons of hydrogen peroxide as fuel for 21 seconds of flight time did not impress the army and development was cancelled. This concept was revived in the 1990s and today these packs can provide powerful, manageable thrust. This rocket belt's propulsion works with superheated water vapour.
John Pym, MP for Tavistock, quickly emerged as a major figure in debate; his long speech on 17 April expressed the refusal of the House of Commons to vote subsidies unless royal abuses were addressed. John Hampden, in contrast, was persuasive in private: he sat on nine committees. A flood of petitions concerning royal abuses were coming up to Parliament from the country. Charles's attempted offer to cease the levying of ship money did not impress the House.
" He added that while it is "creative enough to be worth a recommendation, it lacks the originality of the first flick" and concluded that "The Raid 2 will delight genre fans, but might not impress to[o] many others." But here's one where too much is just the right amount.
Smith's lifestyle continued to be exuberant and this did not impress his conservative, church-going parents. However, at no time did they disown him. In 1972, Smith claimed to have become a born-again Christian, declaring that God had freed him from his past debauchery and helped him see the injustice of racial discrimination. He aligned himself with the Moral Rearmament group, held public meetings promoting majority rule, and befriended a number of Black nationalist leaders.

The singers were expected to learn their songs that night and perform the next day in groups of three.

In the early 1900s Bunin travelled extensively. He was a close friend of Chekhov and his family and continued visiting them regularly until 1904. The October social turmoil of 1905 found Bunin in Yalta, Crimea, from where he moved back to Odessa. Scenes of "class struggle" there did not impress the writer, for he saw them as little more than the Russian common people's craving for anarchy and destruction. Bunin in 1901 In November 1906 Bunin's passionate affair with Vera Muromtseva began.
The first representation of Mya had a very small waist and large breasts, and was said to resemble Jessica Rabbit, which did not impress either Motorola or McCann Erickson. Viewers were reportedly not impressed with Mya because they thought she was a real person.
The prototype Type 87 Chi-I was completed by February 1927. The 20-ton tank underwent field trials, but proved to be under-powered. The weight of the initial prototype and its low speed did not impress the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Office, so a new requirement was issued for a lighter tank, with a nominal weight. The new design was modeled after a Vickers Medium Mark C tank, which had been purchased by the Japanese Army in March 1927.

Xin Mei could not adapt to the urban lifestyle during her early arrival in KL. Furthermore, Yuki's envision and many other incidents has led her to much sufferings.
I pg.79 Using the code name Otto, Deutsch was the controller for the Cambridge Five spy ring from 1933 to 1937, when he was replaced by Theodore Maly. Whilst in London, Deutsch also acted as handler for Percy Glading, who was operating a spy ring within Woolwich Arsenal, which obtained blueprints of Britain's brand new—and highly secret—naval gun. During his time in the United Kingdom, Deutsch was given the task of evaluating an American recruit, Michael Straight, who did not impress him.
Clegg's appearances became more sporadic in 2003–04, and he failed to get on the scoresheet in any of the eight matches in which he played. At the end of the 2003–04 season, Clegg was released from his contract with Bury, and went on trial with Linfield in Northern Ireland over the summer of 2004. However, he did not impress manager David Jeffrey, and was not offered a contract with the club. Fortunately for Clegg, he was picked up by Northwich Victoria in September 2004.

Theyab came on in the second half, but the match ended 0–0.
His father had always treated him harshly and now refused to support him, so he got work doing odd jobs in a hotel. He was in the habit of singing while he worked, and a professional singer heard him and invited him to perform in an amateur talent show. The show consisted of the audience judging acts by clapping or jeering, with bad acts pulled off the stage by a shepherd's crook. Arbuckle sang, danced, and did some clowning around, but he did not impress the audience.
Corenzio was arrested as a suspect in the crime, but released because of insufficient evidence against him. Carracci was so maligned that he could not obtain a commission in the city. The artists commissioned for this work were driven away as a result of the cabal's jealousy and resentment at the intrusion of outsiders to work on such an important project. A group from Naples known as the Santafede was hired by the commissioners, but that group's work did not impress the commissioners, who ultimately hired Corenzio.
Söderlund told BioWare to create a new demo in anticipation of E3, which BioWare considered would be the end of the game if the demo did not impress Söderlund. BioWare spent six weeks to produce the best looking demo to show Söderlund when he was to visit the studio in 2017 prior to E3. To put their best work forward, they added the flying aspect back that was added and removed several times over the course of development. Söderlund was impressed with the demo, particularly the flying.
They selected "Sweet Child of Nothingness" as the "A" side of their third single, to be backed with another original composition as the "B" side. The other song was "Born to Be Wild," which did not impress Jim Quarles; in 1968, this would become a smash hit by Steppenwolf. The band, at this point, also began playing across the Sunset Strip but were limited in venues due to still being minors. Before the band's third single was released, lead guitarist Martin Eshleman injured his hand.
Bailey did not impress manager Dario Gradi as a striker. Gradi, who had trained the likes of David Platt and Dean Ashton in their early years, announced his intention to convert Bailey from a striker to a centre back. Gradi did not expect Bailey to push through and challenge as a first team centre back until the start of 2008. Bailey made his full debut for Alexandra away at Oldham Athletic in the second round of the FA Cup, where he played at centre back.
He subsequently announced he was joining Toyota for the following year and in fact left Renault early, driving the Toyota in the last two races of the 2004 season. However, Villeneuve – away from F1 racing for almost an entire season and struggling to acclimatise quickly to racing at the premier level – did not impress, and the team finished third behind Villeneuve's former team BAR.
He arrives at the gallery at the same time as Paige, opening the door for her and watching her walk inside. We discover that gallery director Beth is his girlfriend and he asks to borrow money from her. From across the room, Jean Maclestone catches Jo's eye, and he looks back at her with a wry smile. Jean asks Beth to introduce her to Jo. Dewey introduces himself and his companions to Jo (who has forgotten his previous meeting with Dewey and does not impress the women).
Newport's England career ran to only one more match. He was called up for the 1990/91 Perth Test while with the A team in Sri Lanka as a replacement for the injured Angus Fraser. He made 40 not out in a lost cause, coming to the crease with England 118 for 6, but did not impress with the ball, taking only one wicket and bowling six no-balls in his fourteen overs. He never played for England again, after a career lasting just three Tests and without a One Day International to his name.
One of these was an unfinished song called "Si La Quieres". At the time, the song only had "bits and pieces", though A.B. liked its existing chorus. Vela wrote a verse to the song, which did not impress A.B.; Vela then spent several hours on writing verses and melodies before the unrequited love theme was approved. A.B. said in an interview that he wrote "Como la Flor"—a career-launching single that established the band in the Tejano market—in a budget Bryan, Texas motel the night after a concert.
A performer who relies entirely on special equipment may not impress an audience. Many people are more impressed by an effect which depends (or seems to depend) entirely on skillful manipulation and misdirection than by an effect which appears to depend to some extent on specially made props. A performer who has mastered the basic skills can nonetheless use gimmicks to powerful effect without it being obvious to the audience. Some prefer not to use gimmicks at all, though most well-known coin magicians do use simple coin gimmicks.
However, he did not fulfil his role in Daejeon Citizen, and could not impress fans of the club. He seemed to have disappeared in Daejeon Citizen's sight. Despite this, he seemed revived at Purple Arena (Nickname of Daejeon World Cup Stadium) after the mid-2006 season. He created a fantastic goal in the first league game after the 2006 World Cup against Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i, and continuously played a pivotal role in the attacking line and managed to score 8 goals in the remainder of the season.
She was signed for the Angel role by producer Jess Oppenheimer on the basis of CBS executive Robert Lewine's recommendation. Oppenheimer did not elect to do a screen test. The Angel pilot did not impress the network, but when Lewine screened it for sponsors S. C. Johnson and General Foods, both sponsors were sufficiently impressed to tell the network executive to put the show on the air or they would cancel their sponsorship of all CBS programs. Fargé played Angelique "Angel" Smith, the scatterbrained French wife of American architect John Smith, played by Marshall Thompson.
As they head closer to the light, it begins to form the shape of a planet. The two make a landing on the planet, and, upon their arrival, the President steps out to welcome them and invites them to a special party, in which the Emcees show off the planet's most beautiful designs. This does not impress Noel, who states that it doesn't matter what clothes one is wearing, they will still be beautiful and loved. This idea coaxes the President and the citizens of the planet to take their clothes off, as does Noel.
Bakircioglu started his professional career with Assyriska, making his senior debut in 1996 at age 15. He would soon establish himself as a regular starter in Division 1, by then the Swedish second tier, despite of his young age. In 1998, Bakircioglu saw a major breakthrough in his senior career and scored nine goals whilst also providing eight assists, in 25 league games. He had a trial with Manchester United during the winter of that year, but did not impress enough to secure a contract with the English team.
The settlement that Bowen had established at Risdon Cove did not impress Collins, and he decided to relocate the settlement down river, on the opposite shore. They landed at Sullivans Cove on 21 February 1804, and created the settlement that was to become Hobart. Soon after this, Collins decided that coastal defence was needed. A redoubt was dug not far from the settlement, and two ship's guns were placed within.. In 1810, the colony's garrison, which had until that time been provided by the New South Wales Corps, was relieved.
The result was a major moral victory for the opposition, led by Kim Dae-jung and Kim Young-sam. The opposition's key demand was direct presidential elections, and Chun sought to foil this by initiating a campaign of delay, deliberation, and deferment. A parliamentary committee debated various proposals for months; on April 13, 1987, Chun suspended even this committee until after the Olympics. This action intensified unrest, but resulting demonstrations did not impress the regime and Chun decided to continue his program to install Roh as his successor.
This does not impress J. Jonah Jameson, publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper, and he begins a smear campaign against the wall-crawler. Jameson hires Peter as a freelance photographer, since Peter is the only person providing clear images of Spider-Man. Peter moves into an apartment with Harry paid for by Norman upon starting college. He keeps his identity as Spider-Man secret from Harry, who likewise keeps his dating relationship with Mary Jane, who had broken up with Flash, a secret from Peter until she reveals it to him.
Not a man in the colony would, I believe, rely upon his word or > engagement for the most trifling thing. In 1834, Loane claimed, without evidence, that Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur had a personal grievance against him and encouraged the pound-keepers and police to take his cattle. He took his complaints to England and prosecuted in person, displaying rancour, exaggeration and disregard of evidence which did not impress the Colonial Office. Arrogant and completely absorbed with the promotion of his fortune, Loane became well known in the colony for his unscrupulous actions and litigation.
During the field trials, the 20-ton tank proved to be under- powered. The weight of the initial prototype and its low speed performance did not impress the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Office, and a new requirement was issued for a lighter tank, with a nominal weight. The new design was modeled after a Vickers Medium Mark C tank, which had been purchased by the Japanese Army in March 1927. The Chi-I had a complex parallelogram suspension system with two pairs of road bogie wheels per leaf spring arrangement.
After leaving anime production company Artmic to work as a comic artist, Kenichi Sonoda presented some of his story concepts and illustrations to Kodansha. These did not impress the editors but an illustration of two girls caught the attention of one of them, who suggested Sonoda develop a concept for it. Sonoda stated in an interview that the drawing was the genesis for the series. At the time Sonoda did not have any plans for the illustration but decided to expand his Riding Bean concept into a developed story.
He played 13 times for Ružomberok as they finished the season in fifth place. Following his release from Ružomberok, Besta joined English Conference Premier side Luton Town on an initial trial period. He signed a one-year contract in August 2010 after impressing in a friendly against Newcastle United. However, he did not impress when he had a full-time contract, being the target of abuse from Luton fans following an error which led to a goal in a league game against Tamworth which Luton went on to lose 3–1.
Anne Maudslay continues: "The life of the village centered round the fountain which stood in the middle of the plaza. Here party after party of women with babies slung on their backs or astride on their hips, and strings of children running at their heels, came to fill their "tinajas" and carry home the water for the night's consumption". Native women's physical attributes did not impress Maudslay, but their discipline did: "They were sober and could attend to their household duties, whilst the men almost without exception were drunk with chicha".
But the group's singing in the recording studio did not impress Farian. "These two guys came into the studio, they recorded, but they didn't have enough quality," Farian said. The final mix of "Girl You Know It's True" was finished by studio performers—including Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, Jodie Rocco and Linda Rocco—in March and April. By May, Pilatus and Morvan were touring Spain, France and Italy, lip-syncing to the pre-recorded tracks and thrilling crowds with their distinct style — spandex shorts, thigh- high boots and cornrow hair extensions.
In the late 1970s, General Brewing took advantage of the "generic brand" marketing craze in the US by producing beer with plain white labels emblazoned with the word BEER. Rumors surfaced that BEER was simply repackaged Lucky Lager. When the generic craze died, and the microbrewery movement took off, General had difficulty maintaining profitability as a brewer of inexpensive beers. The fact that Lucky Lager tasted no worse than expensively-advertised "premium" brands such as Budweiser or Miller did not impress a market of drinkers where image was frequently more important than taste.
Maxim questions Boy about the Book, believing Valerian had it. When Boy is unable to answer, Maxim grows frustrated and leaves. It emerges that Maxim is seeking the Book because Frederick, determined not to die, as he has no heir to the throne, and is the last in line for his family, is attempting to find a way to become immortal, and is relying on astrologers, alchemists and necromancers to help him, and if a person does not impress him, he has them killed. Maxim hopes that the Book will provide the answer.
While much of the Northern press praised or at least accepted Lincoln's speech, the new Confederacy essentially met his inaugural address with contemptuous silence. The Charleston Mercury was an exception: it excoriated Lincoln's address as manifesting "insolence" and "brutality," and attacked the Union government as 'a mobocratic empire.' The speech also did not impress other states who were considering secession from the Union. Indeed, after Fort Sumter was attacked and Lincoln declared a formal State of Insurrection, four more states—Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas—seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy.
In June was assigned to the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project (AFSWP), and was promoted to commander in July. While waiting for his Q clearance, he was put in charge of a board investigating a crash of an AJ Savage, then the Navy's frontline nuclear bomber, an aircraft that did not impress Ramage. After his clearance came through, he worked in the AFSWP's Operations Division, writing and reviewing war plans. After becoming jet qualified in F9F Panthers at the Fleet Air Gunnery Unit (FAGU), Ramage assumed command of Carrier Air Group 19 in December 1952.
As one of Anthony Eden's biographers put it, she was "equally at home in the worlds of Hatfield and Fitzrovia",D. R. Thorpe (2003) Eden while a reviewer of her memoir wrote that "few lives can have touched so many social worlds, or graced them so elegantly".Ed Smith, The Times, 15 December 2007 Even so, Lady Avon did not impress everyone: after the future Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher met her at a Conservative Party ball in 1954, she wrote dismissively to her sister, "Mrs Anthony Eden received us. Really she is a most colourless personality".
You see, I might say > that I knew Victor Berger before I was born, since he knew my mother and > father. But I don't remember what he said on those talks; I remember > distinctly what I said, but his views did not impress me at all. I was far > more interested in my views anyhow than I was in his. Haessler characterized his views as significantly to the left of those of Berger, whom he called an "old fogey" that had told him "not to be a damned fool" and who had considered Haessler too young and rash and impulsive.
The Prince was enthusiastic and keen but his approach did not impress the troops and mutiny ensued. The Prince was able to keep order but he ignored the orders from his brother to return home until he felt that he had issued sufficient new rules. Eventually the Prince left Gibraltar, never to return and although he nominally remained the Governor it was Major General Trigge who was briefly the first in a long line of acting Lieutenant Governors. One of Trigge's first acts as acting Governor was to countermand 35 of the 169 new regulations his predecessor had introduced.
Kjartan accepted a trial from Bristol City at the start of the 2007–08 season and went on the clubs Latvian tour against Skonto FC and FK Žalgiris Vilnius, but did not impress sufficiently and was released after the tour. He made a good impression at Falkirk after scoring in the 2–1 defeat of Livingston on 5 August 2009 as a trialist attacker in a friendly. In August 2009, Kjartan signed a six-month loan deal at Falkirk, with an option of a permanent deal. He scored on his debut, against Dundee United on 29 August 2009.
Guzmán started the 2007 season with the Cubs in the bullpen, but was sent down to the minors to gain more innings of work due to a crowded staff. He gained an opportunity when the Cubs fifth starter Wade Miller was injured on April 22. Since the Cubs had several off-dates in their schedule, Guzmán had the opportunity for a few additional starts, but did not impress the Cubs manager Lou Piniella by pitching poorly at the Triple-A level. Guzmán took advantage of the opportunity by giving up only one run in five innings of work against the Washington Nationals.
As paramedics take him away, Jack quietly admits that he believes Greg after feeling his carotid artery, which remained stable while Greg was claiming his innocence. Impressed with Greg for his integrity and quick thinking, Jack approves Greg to be "The Gregfocker." Four months later, on Christmas Day, Greg and Pam's parents come to spend Christmas with them in their new house. Greg's parents (who are Jewish) give Jack a kippah as his present, informing Jack that while they were nursing him back to health they traced his family roots and discovered that he is part Jewish (which does not impress Jack).
He tasted his first success in the same year with the S. S. Rajamouli's directorial debut, coming-of-age action film Student No.1. Though Subbu which released in the same year could not impress the audience, his 2002 action film Aadi was a massive success. For the film, Rama Rao received Nandi Special Jury Award presented by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The two next films Allari Ramudu and Naaga were back-to-back failures. His second collaboration with the director S. S. Rajamouli was the 2003 action film Simhadri, which ended up as one of the biggest blockbusters of that year.
Splett remained bishop after the German annexation of the Free City. In early 1941, he applied for admitting the Danzig diocese as member in Archbishop Adolf Bertram's Eastern German Ecclesiastical Province and thus at the Fulda Conference of Bishops; however, Bertram, also speaker of the Fulda conference, rejected the request. Any arguments that the Free City of Danzig had been annexed to Nazi Germany did not impress Bertram since Danzig's annexation lacked international recognition. Until the reorganization of the Catholic dioceses in Danzig and the formerly eastern territories of Germany the diocesan territory remained unaltered and the see exempt.
On February 8, 1959, the Red Sox announced that they had Sisler signed for the 1959 season. After what was considered a "disappointing" season, he did not impress with his first outing in spring training, giving up two hits and five bases on balls in just two innings of work. Lack of pitching depth was a noted weakness for the Red Sox entering the season, with unpredictable youth and with hopes that Sisler could regain his previous level of success. Sisler opened the season slated as a relief pitcher with the idea that he would start in certain cases.
She had travelled widely all her life, and after losing her seat in Parliament, she travelled to Russia in 1932 (which did not impress her) and Kenya in 1933. In 1935, she visited Turkey as head of the British delegation to the International Congress of Women Citizens, and as such met President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. She visited Copenhagen in the same capacity in 1939. In 1935, she was a member of the Next Five Years Group and in 1936 was asked to join a Government Commission to Hong Kong and Malaya to inquire into the mui tsai question.
Besides, Chauhan dubbed for Kareena Kapoor with her "husky vocals" in the song "Chhaliya" and "Dil Dance Maare", included in the soundtrack album of Tashan. 2009 marks Chauhan's second collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja by singing "Batla De Koyi" from Chal Chalein and "Hichki Hichki" from Paa. In a review of the latter by Sify, they considered it a "situational number that does not impress too much". During the year, Chauhan received critical acclaim with the Vishal Bhardwaj-composed "Raat Ke Dhai Baje" from Kaminey for having a "seamless" transition of alternating voices by Chauhan and co-singer Rekha Bhardwaj.
In World War II, an artillery station is set up on Abalone, one of the Aegean Islands. In 1961, eighteen years after it is shut down, Boris Badenov has taken over the island and reactivated the station's guns as a ploy to annoy the world until they turn over Bullwinkle J. Moose and Rocky the Flying Squirrel (a scheme that does not impress Natasha Fatale). Back in Frostbite Falls, Bullwinkle, on a grocery trip, is duped into a mission to silence the guns. With Rocky in tow, he boards a plane that crash-lands on Gibraltar when hit by a cannonball.
After the Lympne trials 'JK and 'JL were delivered to Martlesham Heath for evaluation as a primary trainer, but did not impress the Air Ministry enough for any development to be funded by them. G-EBJK was returned to Filton for modifications in December 1925. It was fitted with the newly developed 36 hp Cherub III mounted slightly lower in the fuselage, and the top longerons were curved down more to improve the view from the rear cockpit. The fuel tank was enlarged and it was fitted with new metal wings giving it a span of 37 ft 7 in (11.45 m).
On 7 January 1941 the Holy See appointed Bolesław Gumowski for the German annexed Suwałki Region within the Diocese of Łomża. In early 1941, Bertram, Metropolitan bishop of the Eastern German Ecclesiastical Province and speaker of the Fulda Conference of Bishops, rejected the request to admit the Danzig diocese as member in his ecclesiastical province and at the conference. Any arguments that Free City of Danzig had been annexed to Nazi Germany did not impress since Danzig's annexation lacked international recognition. Bishop Adamski of Katowice, whom German occupants prevented from carrying out his duties since 1940, had appointed Franz Stryż as vicar general.
1 Collins arrived at the Derwent River on 16 February 1804, aboard Ocean, immediately taking command from the young Lieutenant by virtue of rank (Collins was a colonel). The settlement that Bowen had established at Risdon Cove was vulnerable to changing tides and poor water supply and did not impress Collins. After three trips across the Derwent River to view possible alternatives, he decided to relocate the settlement down river, on the opposite shore. They landed at Sullivans Cove on 21 February 1804, and created the settlement that was to become Hobart, making it the second-oldest- established colony in Australia.
He was recognised as one of the ablest and most effective leaders of the Liberal party and when, after a brief interval in 1885, Gladstone returned to office in 1886, Harcourt was made Chancellor of the Exchequer, an office which he again filled from 1892 to 1895. Between 1880 and 1892 Harcourt acted as Gladstone's political deputy. A first-rate party fighter, his services were of huge value. However, in spite of his great success as a platform speaker, he was generally felt to be speaking from an "advocate's brief", and did not impress the public as a conviction politician.
Faraday's belief had been that ions were produced in the process of electrolysis, that is, an external direct current source of electricity was necessary to form ions. Arrhenius proposed that, even in the absence of an electric current, aqueous solutions of salts contained ions. He thus proposed that chemical reactions in solution were reactions between ions. The dissertation did not impress the professors at Uppsala, but Arrhenius sent it to a number of scientists in Europe who were developing the new science of physical chemistry, such as Rudolf Clausius, Wilhelm Ostwald, and J. H. van 't Hoff.
In this office he did not impress Wilson – he was in poor health, and he botched the response to an electoral boundary change dispute in Northamptonshire and accepted weakening amendments to the Race Relations Act of 1965. In December 1965, Soskice was relieved of his Home Office responsibilities and made Lord Privy Seal. He had, though, ensured Government support for Sydney Silverman's Private Members Bill, passed on 28 October 1965, which suspended the death penalty in the United Kingdom for five years (except for treason). This reform is sometimes erroneously included with the Jenkins reforms which followed.
The Duke of Grafton, who bred and owned Whizgig Whizgig began her racing career at Newmarket's Craven meeting in the spring of 1822. On 11 April, the fourth day of the meeting the filly faced two opponents in a five furlong Sweepstakes. Ridden by Francis Buckle she won at odds of 1/2 to win a prize of 800 guineas. She did not impress all observers, with the Sporting Magazine describing her as "a little idle lurching thing". On the following afternoon Whizgig ran in a Sweepstakes for fillies over the Rowley Mile course and won at odds of 3/1, beating three others very easily for a 1,200 guinea prize.
Against Connellan's wishes, the trades council affiliated to the LRC, and in 1901 he served as its delegate to the committee. He was elected to its National Executive Committee as its first trades council representative. This experience moved him towards a split from the Liberal Party and, though he was re-elected to the council as a Lib-Lab in 1903, in 1904 he decided that he would in future contest elections for Labour. He attempted to become the party's candidate for Leeds East at the 1906 UK general election, but his recent conversion to Labour did not impress the local party, which instead backed ILP member James O'Grady.
Born in Crewe, Poole played for local side Crewe Carriage Works and Nantwich before joining Burslem Port Vale as an amateur in October 1897. He made his debut at the Athletic Ground in a 1–0 defeat by Barnsley St. Peter's in a Midland League match on 9 October. The goal conceded came as Poole managed to punch an indirect free kick into his own goal; he constantly ran out of his area during the match and did not impress. Despite this he signed as a professional in 1898 and was utilized as a reserve until January 1900, at which point he became the first choice goalkeeper.
He did not impress, and left for another Third Division club, Watford, for £10,000, where he found regular first-team football. He was ever-present in all competitions in the 1974–75 season, which finished with relegation, and extended the run to 69 consecutive matches before a groin injury put an end to his career in the Football League. After making a return to the game with Wootton Blue Cross on a non-contract basis, Goodeve began five years with Southern League club Bedford Town. He made 251 appearances in all competitions, scored 21 goals, and only left when the club was on the brink of folding.
This suspension became standard on the majority of the subsequently designed Japanese tanks and can be seen on the Type 95 Ha- Go light tank and Type 97 Chi-Ha, as examples. Many IJA generals and staff attended the field trials of the Chi-I at the Fuji Training Grounds. However, the tank weighted in at approximately 20-tons when fully loaded and was under- powered as the V-8 engine only produced 140 hp. The heavy weight of this initial prototype and its low speed did not impress the Imperial Japanese Army General Staff Office, and a new requirement was issued for a lighter tank, with a nominal weight.
At the University of Uppsala, he was dissatisfied with the chief instructor of physics and the only faculty member who could have supervised him in chemistry, Per Teodor Cleve, so he left to study at the Physical Institute of the Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm under the physicist Erik Edlund in 1881. His work focused on the conductivities of electrolytes. In 1884, based on this work, he submitted a 150-page dissertation on electrolytic conductivity to Uppsala for the doctorate. It did not impress the professors, among whom was Cleve, and he received a fourth-class degree, but upon his defense it was reclassified as third-class.
The application contemplated hiring 35 staff and producing five hourlong newscasts per week. BCTV, the owner of Victoria's private CBC (and secondary CTV) affiliate, CHEK- TV, supported the application and noted that, were it to be granted, CHEK would become a full CTV affiliate, in line with its sister across Boundary Bay, CHAN-TV in Vancouver. The CRTC rejected all of the channel 10 applications, including that of the CBC, on August 10, 1973. The CBC did not impress the commission with its programming plans, while the board deemed that the Vancouver applicants failed to "adequately reflect the potential of a rapidly growing city".
Remains of a German convoy destroyed near Falaise On 17 August 1944, Model received from Hitler Diamonds to go with his Knight's Cross with Oakleaves and Swords, in reward for his shoring up of the Eastern Front. Simultaneously, he was transferred to the west, replacing Kluge as commander- in-chief of Army Group B and OB West. The front in Normandy had collapsed after nearly two months of severe fighting, the U.S. Third Army was driving for the Seine, and an Army group was in danger of being annihilated in the Falaise pocket. Model's first order was that Falaise be defended, which did not impress his staff.
From 1928, he lectured in tactics and war studies for the basic General Staff training course, and in 1930 he was transferred to the Training Branch of the Truppenamt. He became known both for his enthusiastic support of military modernisation and for his complete lack of tact. In 1938, the year he became a major general (Generalmajor), he led a testfiring of the Mörser 18 on mocked-up Czech fortifications, which did not impress Hitler. As were many army officers at the time, Model was a supporter of the Nazi government; his time in Berlin also brought him into contact with senior members of the Nazi regime.
He went on to play in all five matches of the series. Panesar was selected for the first Test, but his bowling did not impress and he was dropped for the remainder of the series, leaving Swann as England's only slow bowler. In the first Test at Sophia Gardens, Swann hit a first-innings 47 not out from 40 balls. His bowling was anodyne, failing to pick up a wicket in 38 overs in Australia's only innings, in which they amassed 674 for 6 declared with four centurions, but his second- innings 31 helped England salvage a draw, as Australia were unable to take the final English wicket with Panesar and James Anderson at the crease.
Hearing this news, Cetto decides to run for Mayor of the town as well. He does everything possible to be voted by the people of the town, but his ignorance and narrow-mindedness does not impress journalists and reporters, so Cetto is forced to call a manager, Gerry Salerno, from Bari but living most recently in Milan. Cetto just sees Pino as "The Stranger" (that's because Cetto is from Calabria while Pino is originally from Apulia, a different region) as a turncoat fellow since he left the South of Italy to go to the North, somehow betraying its cultural heritage. Cetto begins the campaign with Gerry, using tricks, cheating and deceit against the peasants inhabitants of Marina di Sopra.
The season debut did not impress Gordon Farrer from WAtoday, who wrote "welcome to season two of Winners & Losers [...] the acting is patchy, too many of the characters are tinny and the moral is ham-fisted." While Holly Richards from The West Australian said that the storyline surrounding the characters of Sophie, Doug, Bec and Matt was an "awkward situation" and overall "the first episode promises some interesting conflict to come". Ian Cuthbertson from The Australian said that season two is "still centred on four women, defined as losers at school, who win a motza on Oz Lotto". He called it "soap as usual" and questioned why something "interesting" was not done with their winnings, such a living abroad.
Pope, p. 50 It was during this period that she first sang "Whacky-Wack" and "When you Wink the Other Eye", a song which introduced her famous wink at the audience.Farson, pp. 38–39 Unlike her West End audiences who enjoyed her coarse humour, her "blue" performances did not impress audiences in the East End.Pope, p. 73 While appearing at the Foresters music hall in Mile End, she met and began dating Percy Charles Courtenay,Pope, p. 56 a ticket tout from Streatham, London. The courtship was brief, and the couple married on 12 November 1887 at St John the Baptist, Hoxton. In May 1888, Lloyd gave birth to a daughter, Marie (1888–1967).
In the early 1980s, producer Kip Ohman proposed to Charles Edward Pogue about the idea of remaking the classic sci-fi horror movie The Fly (1958 film). After reading the original novel by George Langelaan and watching The Fly made in 1958, Pogue was very interested in the remake plan, therefore he found Stuart Cornfeld to work with 20th Century Fox. Pogue's initial idea of the screenplay was very similar to Langelaan's original work, but he and Cornfeld then felt the focus should be put on the protagonist's mutating process, not the final result of the mutation. Unexpectedly, the film script did not impress Fox, and the shooting intentions immediately fell through.
It seemed so bland, so undemanding, so uneventful ... I've got to admit it repays further listening, and that it is not quite the electronic Muzak I had written it off as initially." The review noted that the album was composed in the same manner as classical music, rather than rock music, and concluded: "On the other hand, Oxygène is not classical music. Though the track the discos are playing [referring to "Oxygène Part IV"] is, as you might expect, actually its least effective section musically, it has the same relationship to popular music as Tangerine Dream, say, or Oldfield. Personally, it still does not impress me as much as either, except at a technical level.
Kesselring at the controls of a Siebel Fh 104 aircraft At the age of 48, Kesselring learned to fly, following the old military doctrine that officers should not ask their men to do anything they would not do themselves.Sangster, Field-Marshal Kesselring, p. 44. He later stated that first-hand knowledge of all aspects of aviation was essential to being able to command airmen, although he was well aware that latecomers like himself did not impress the old pioneers or the young aviators.Kesselring, The Memoirs of Field Marshal Kesselring, p. 31. He qualified in various single- and multi-engine aircraft and continued flying three or four days per week until March 1945.
After a demonstration flight during which it met the War Office's demands of a two-hour flight with a passenger and (200 kg (441 lb) of ballast in a 40 kmh (25 mph) wind and a gliding flight from a height of 200 m (626 ft), an example was ordered and early January 1911 Caillé successfully put it through a series of tests at Buc. Captain Fulton from the British Army witnessed the tests and accepted the aircraft on January 11, 1911. It was subsequently flown at the Royal Aircraft Factory, where it did not impress,Driver, Hugh, The Birth of Military Aviation: Britain, 1903-1914. Woodbridge: The Boydell Press for the Royal Historical Society, 1997. p.259.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, child vaudevillian Buster Keaton (Larry White) stays in boarding houses, rides in train boxcars, and performs with his mother and father in a knock-about (physical comedy) act called The Three Keatons. As a young man Keaton (Donald O’Connor) travels on his own to Hollywood and tricks his way onto the grounds of silent-film studio Famous Studio as a workman carrying a board, as in one of his trademark comic bits. Sneaking onto a set, he attracts the attention of a young casting director, Gloria Brent (Ann Blyth). He demonstrates his type of physical comedy to a director Kurt Bergner (Peter Lorre), whom he does not impress.
Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon sent a letter opposing the bill and dispatched three Treasury officials to testify against it, arguing that the public was being confused as special coin issues entered circulation. The committee's resolve to have no more commemorative coins—after this one—did not impress the full House, which added two more half dollars to the legislation to mark other anniversaries. The Senate agreed to the changes, and President Calvin Coolidge signed the authorizing act on February 24, 1925. There was a lengthy battle over the design between the Commission of Fine Arts and the Vermont commission in charge of organizing the coin issue, as a result of which the original designer, Sherry Fry, left the project, replaced by Keck.
Although the Irish Times thought some members of the team that played pre-season friendlies in Ireland, Hankin included, needed to "shed a bit of weight before the real competitive season gets under way", the Whitecaps won their division, but failed in the playoffs. According to Hankin, whose personal return rose to 12 goals and 8 assists from 22 matches, "we were the best team in the NASL, but we blew it." In November 1982, First Division club Arsenal, who were struggling to score goals after the departure of Frank Stapleton, expressed an interest in signing Hankin. There was some argument about the feevariously reported as £300,000 or £400,000and the deal included an agreement for him to return to Vanvouver if he did not impress.

The former Brøndby head coach, Tom Køhlert has often praised Randrups abilities, numerous times calling him a star player for the future. His first games for Brøndby was in the middle of the club's biggest crisis, fighting against relegation, and Randrup did not impress greatly. However, in the second half of the 2007–2008 season, with former Danish international Thomas Rytter demoted to the reserves, Randrup established himself as first choice for right back, and became an immediate fan- and media favourite after strong performances in the opening games. On 22 March 2008, Randrup was called up for the national team for a friendly game against the Czech Republic, where he came on as a substitute after 60 minutes, thus receiving his first cap.
Her first release was in the multi-starrer Vedam, where she played a role as a part of the troupe of a lead character, Manoj Manchu. The film won positive reviews, and Lekha's small role was labelled as "adequate support" by critics, as the film enjoyed a successful run commercially. She then appeared in Pushkar-Gayathri's comedy film, Va, playing a suicidal schoolgirl who meets the characters of Shiva and Charan on an election night in Chennai. The film received average reviews, whilst Lekha's portrayal also received mixed acclaim with a reviewer citing that she "carries off her role of a dimwit quite well", whilst another cites that she "does not impress and needs to brush up her acting skills and lip sync".
Howard then defeated Clarke in one election for the presidency of the Cambridge Union Society, but Clarke subsequently became President of the Cambridge Union a year later, being elected on 6 March 1963 by a majority of 56 votes. Clarke opposed the admission of women to the Union, and is quoted as saying upon his election, "The fact that Oxford has admitted them does not impress me at all. Cambridge should wait a year to see what happens before any decision is taken on admitting them." In an early-1990s documentary, journalist Michael Cockerell played to Clarke some tape recordings of Clarke speaking at the Cambridge Union as a young man, and he displayed amusement at hearing his then-stereotypical upper class accent.
Trow's only novel, The City in the Mist, (1984) did not impress critics. They were put off by its minimalist style and lack of plot, narrative momentum or involving characters. The book, which moves from the mid-19th century to the present, tracks the energy in three intertwined families, from the masculine vitality of a thuggish Irish immigrant to the weak flame of his elderly bachelor grandson, who lives on his income in two rooms in New York City, and spends his time caring for his clothes and going out into what remains of Society. The central concerns of the novel – the decline of masculine energy and the replacement of masculine social authority by feminine social authority – Trow later addresses explicitly in My Pilgrim's Progress.
Brought up through the youth ranks by the Beijing Ducks, Mengke Bateer made his debut for China's national basketball team prior to the 1994 Asian Games, at the age of 18. Three years later, although a regular member of the playing rotation, he was removed from the national squad due to "disciplinary problems" as reported in the media. Often presented to the public as a filial son, Bateer would attempt several times over the course of his career to leave his teams, and return to his family. While training with China's national team in 1999, Bateer was invited to play in a pre-draft tournament held in Phoenix, where he suffered from jet lag and did not impress the scouts in attendance.
In 1940, C.W. Briggs (Woody Allen) is an insurance investigator in New York City who is highly successful, owing to his many connections and ability to think like a criminal. His work does not impress Betty Ann Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt), an efficiency expert who butts heads with C.W. over his old-fashioned views. Her advice is usually followed, however, because she secretly is in a relationship with her boss, Chris Magruder (Dan Aykroyd), who constantly reassures her that they will be free to pursue their relationship in public once he finalizes his divorce with his wife. While attending a dinner with some employees, Voltan (David Ogden Stiers), a stage magician calls on Betty Ann and C.W. to be in his hypnotism act.
Tunnicliffe made his debut for Stockport as a substitute in a 2–0 defeat at Notts County in 2005 aged just 16. He had a trial at Liverpool in October 2005,Tunnicliffe stays on at Anfield but did not impress enough for Liverpool to meet Stockport's price demands.Reds reject Hatters youth A similar trial at Southampton followed, with Tunnicliffe this time rejecting the offer, feeling that the move wasn't right for his career or him personally. He was used sparingly in Stockport's first team prior to the 2008–09 season, where injuries to other defenders led to Tunnicliffe making a handful of appearances early in the season, and later the departure of Gareth Owen resulted in him being thrust into regular first team participation.

The late 1980s and early 1990s found Farul in the Divizia A, but with results which did not impress too much: 1988–89 – 9th, 1989–90 – 10th, 1990–91 – 10th, 1991–92 – 13th, 1992–93 – 9th and 1993–94 – 6th. Things started to change during the 1994–95 season, which was an important one for the team from the shore of the Black Sea. Even if the ranking was lower than in the previous season, 11th, Farul was enrolled in the 1995 UEFA Intertoto Cup, making its debut in the competition. The five teams group in which the team from Constanța was assigned was formed of: Cannes (9th place in the Ligue 1), Dnepr Mogilev (5th place in the Belarusian Premier League), Bečej (4th place in the First League of Serbia and Montenegro) and Pogoń Szczecin (8th place in the Ekstraklasa).
Maso has said that he became interested in making noise music when he heard the sounds of destruction on television as a child, but that his first exposure to the Japanese noise genre was Hanatarash's debut LP, which at the time did not impress Maso. It was however later, upon happening on an LP entitled LSD by a Tokyo noise band named Nord, and mistakenly thinking it was an album by the band LSD, that these experiences had possibly kindled his future interest. A year thereafter Maso sought many different types of noise releases in the underground music stores in and around Osaka Japan. Two years would pass until Maso would start to develop his own style of noise and begin producing, at which time he quit listening to the noise albums of others and focused in on his own unique style.
Jim is happy when he finds out that his father is to be engaged to Eugenia Willis (Billie Burke), until Eugenia's overbearing married sister, Nesta Pett (Cora Witherspoon), refuses to give permission for the marriage because she has doubts about James' sincerity and financial background. One morning, James tries to introduce the Petts to his son, whom he describes as an artist; but Jim, who has stayed out all night drinking, comes staggering in to find that Nesta Pett has discovered that the "artist" is a caricaturist, which does not impress her. Meanwhile, Jim meets Nesta Pett's niece, Ann Chester (Madge Evans), in a nightclub and falls in love with her. Ann is engaged to Lord Frederick 'Freddie' Priory (Ralph Forbes) and, therefore, keeps her distance from Jim, despite his several attempts to get to know her better and to woo her.
Lois and Superman in left Superman: The Animated Series aired on Kids' WB from September 1996 to February 2000. Tim Daly voiced Superman/Clark Kent and Dana Delany as Lois Lane. When developing the series, the producers made the decision to establish Lois as a character much more grounded in her Golden Age roots, that of a sharp, aggressive, and career- minded reporter who wasn't afraid to dig deep into the Metropolis dirt to gain a story, with Clark Kent as the voice of caution and reason in his alter-ego, and as the well-meaning, boy scout in his role as Superman. In the series, already accustomed to a world filled with madmen, Superman's heroics in Metropolis do not impress Lois initially, and her professional rivalry with his alter-ego Clark Kent isn't any better.
Named the JL 12 and equipped with a flex-fuel four cylinder engine, the vehicle did not impress the "Commission des plans de modernisation de l'automobile", which decided in 1946 to merge Somua with Willème and Panhard to form a new company, the Générale française de l'automobile (GFA). In 1946 Somua launched a new range of trucks, named JL 15, with a five-speed transmission to exploit the 130 horsepower delivered by the 8.6 liter six-cylinder diesel engine. It was available with six choices of chassis: 6.30 meters to 10.89 meters and 2 or 3 axles, supporting 11 to 16 tonnes payload. The JL 15 was available in truck or bus configuration - the models were respectively the JL 15T and JL 15LO. In 1948 Somua built two double 1500 V DC EMU rail engines for SNCF.
Suzanne Somers on the in 1981, shortly after her departure from Three's Company Somers was cast in the ABC sitcom Three's Company in January 1977. After actresses Suzanne Zenor and Susan Lanier did not impress producers during the first two test pilots, Somers was suggested by ABC president Fred Silverman, who had seen her on the Tonight Show and she was auditioned and hired the day before the taping of the third and final pilot officially commenced. She portrayed Chrissy Snow, a stereotypical dumb blonde, who was employed as an office secretary. The series co-starred John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt in a comedy of errors about two single women living with a single man who pretends to be gay in order to bypass the landlord's policy prohibiting single men sharing an apartment with single women.
The West Indies toured England in 1950. They had a good batting line-up including the "three W's" (Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell), but they were unusually short of bowlers. They took two young spinners, 20-year-old Alf Valentine and 21-year-old Sonny Ramadhin, who had only played two first-class matches each. Valentine in particular was a surprising choice as he had only taken two wickets in those matches at an average of 95, but somehow he had caught the eye of the West Indies captain, John Goddard. Valentine did not impress in the first few matches of the tour, and was not certain to be in the Test team, until in the final warm-up match before the Tests he took 8 for 26 and 5 for 41 as the West Indies beat Lancashire by an innings and 220 runs.
" However, Akinola stated that "Lyrically, they may not impress any poet, but clichés aside, the message is loud and clear", but noted that "What they lack in finesse, they more than make up in conviction." Also, Gelwicks told that the album has "Too-basic lyrics are still a key trouble that burdens Royal Tailor's creative direction", but "the band has locked onto a reliable sound that they can sell convincingly." Joshua Andre wrote that "Though on the surface they seem like another pop/rock boy band, while they do have clichéd lyrics sometimes, at most times lead singer Tauren, guitarist DJ, bass guitarist Blake and drummer Jarrod highlight their songwriting prowess and their ability to entertain while still delivering the ever true message of God." At Louder Than the Music, Richard Smith said the album was "packed full of positive lyrics that point to Jesus.
However, he was given one last chance in the One Day International team at the 2004 Champions Trophy, replacing Jean-Paul Duminy after a 0–5 ODI-series loss in Sri Lanka. After not batting against Bangladesh, van Jaarsveld made a golden duck in South Africa's second and last match, smashing a ball from Ian Bradshaw to Daren Powell in a five-wicket loss to the eventual champions West Indies. He played two more Tests, however – making 15 runs in two innings (out of the South Africans' total of 679) in a draw at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur before he was dropped for Hashim Amla. He came back for the second Test of five against England, but a first-innings 1 did not impress the selectors, though he did make 49 off 52 balls in the second innings as South Africa attempted a chase of 378 in 86 overs.
On 4 February 2015, New Radiant terminated captain Mohamed Umair's contract on mutual consent and signed to the rival side Maziya on a 1-year contract. Umair was under a heavy criticism from the club's fans because he was not being able to play at his peak throughout the pre-season friendly tournament POMIS Cup, and a club official also confirmed to the media that the club and the player believes that it will be the best decision for both club and for the player. New Radiant also terminated the contract of three foreign players; Pedro Marenco, Everton Souza Santos and Rafael Betim Marti on 5 February 2015 as they could not impress the team officials during the 2015 POMIS Cup. Later that day, Everton Souza Santos and Rafael Betim Marti signed to the T.C. Sports. On 6 February 2015, New Radiant traveled to K. Thulusdhoo to play a friendly match, where a very youthful New Radiant team they defeated the Thulusdhoo team by 13–0.
In 1960, Allan Williams, the Beatles' manager, arranged a season of bookings in Hamburg, starting on 17 August 1960, but complained that they did not impress him, and hoped that he could find a better act. Having no permanent drummer, Paul McCartney looked for someone to fill the Hamburg position. Best had been seen playing in the Casbah with his own group, the Black Jacks, and it was noted that he was a steady drummer, playing the bass drum on all four beats in the bar, which pushed the rhythm. In Liverpool, his female fans knew him as being "mean, moody, and magnificent", which convinced McCartney he would be good for the group. The Beatles Anthology DVD 2003 (Episode 1 – 0:39:26) McCartney talking Best's reputation in Liverpool After the Black Jacks broke up, McCartney persuaded Best to go to Hamburg with the group, by saying they would each earn £15 per week (equivalent to £ in ).
Born in Leith, Walker began his playing career with local Junior team Leith Primrose, moving on to second-tier SFL club Leith Athletic in March 1898.[A Record of pre-war Scottish League Players], John Litster / Scottish Football Historian magazine, October 2012 His performances at the end of the 1897–98 season and the outset of 1898–99 drew the attention of Heart of Midlothian, and he signed for the Tynecastle club in October 1898 for a fee quoted as £50 or £80. He made six Division One appearances for Hearts and featured in an East of Scotland Shield win over local rivals Hibernian, but his overall form did not impress the hierarchy and he was allowed to leave the club at the end of the season. Walker joined Lincoln City of the English Football League Second Division for the 1899–1900 season and made six league appearances for the Imps during the first half of the campaign before returning home to Scotland in a poor state of health.
The hosts thought the writers' material was too sophisticated for mass audiences and frequently not very funny; the writers thought Cowan and Robins were less than erudite and felt uncomfortable writing for them. Sand tried to make peace between the hosts and writers, seeking material that Cowan and Robins would feel comfortable with yet encouraging the hosts to town down their shrill delivery. Pre-debut rehearsals did not impress Sand nor Fox executives, who decided on November 29 to push back Wilton Norths premiere, which had been scheduled for the next night, to allow the crew extra time to gel (the hosts and writers had been together for not even a week). The delay also meant a retooling of the show, beginning with Sand's scrapping of the opening news review segment; Sand believed it did not mesh with Cowan and Robin's friendly approach, while Fox objected to its crude humor. By the time Wilton North did finally reach the air on December 11,"'Wilton North' makes first report tonight," from Houston Chronicle, 12/11/1987 its own cast and crew would have difficulty articulating what the show was even trying to do.
206 He lobbied, unsuccessfully, to be appointed a judge of one of the courts of common law, which would have enabled him to move to Dublin, which has always been the centre of Irish political and social life (although the Irish capital did not impress him: "it resembles Bristol but falls short", he wrote). He lived for many years in Limerick, a city which, like other residents and travellers of the time, he praised for its wealth and beauty, and he remained there until the outbreak of the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Gernon and his family suffered greatly during the Rebellion, as we know from his petition in 1653 to Oliver Cromwell, in which he acknowledges Cromwell's lawful authority as ruler of England and Ireland, and asks again for a pension, which it seems had already been promised but not paid. Gernon states that he had lost an estate worth £3000 (a considerable sum at the time) and that he and his wife and four small children had been forced to "travel in depth of winter through the woods and bogs", and as a result one child starved to death and Mrs.
Rodney Craig Ontong (born 9 September 1955) is a former first-class cricketer who played for Glamorgan County Cricket Club in the UK, and for various South African teams. Ontong was born in Johannesburg, and originally came to the UK from South Africa to pursue a football career; he had trials with Chelsea in the early 1970s. He did not impress enough to join their books, instead turning to cricket, after some success as a club cricketer in London. The South African earned a place on the MCC groundstaff and coach Len Muncer later recommended him to Glamorgan, Muncer's former county. Ontong made his Glamorgan debut against the touring Australian team at Swansea in 1975. From 1977 he was a regular in the Glamorgan side and would return to South Africa at the conclusion of each British summer to play more first-class cricket. Early in his career he was a right-arm fast-medium pace bowler but in 1983 he took up off-spin for the first time and it became his preferred craft. Around the same time Ontong moved from the middle and lower order to the number three position.
Wettimuny made his international debut with a composed 46 in an ODI with England, which left the required run rate too high for his teammates to chase. However, he got his revenge in the next match the following day – the last of the 2-match series – where he scored 86 not out, his highest ODI score, which boosted Sri Lanka to 215 in their 45 overs. Sri Lanka won the match by three runs, thus drawing their first ODI series. Wettimuny did not impress in his first Test match, however, scoring only 15 runs in two innings as England won by seven wickets. But in the 1981–82 tour of Pakistan, he established his place in the team, scoring 71 in the first Test before recording Sri Lanka's first Test century at Faisalabad. Spending over six hours at the crease, he managed 157 runs, powering Sri Lanka to 454. Sri Lanka eventually drew the Test, failing to bowl Pakistan out in 59 overs, but it was Sri Lanka's first non-loss in Test cricket. Sri Lanka lost the last Test, despite Wettimuny top-scoring with 41 in the second innings, but Wettimuny would be rather pleased with his tour personally. He also impressed in ODIs, making 37 in the first of four ODIs against Australia in 1982–83.
