Mollaret's meningitis is a recurrent or chronic inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known collectively as the meninges. Arsenic poses the most significant health risk to exposed individuals via contact with contaminated surface water and sediment. Epstein–Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative diseases (also termed EBV- associated lymphoproliferative diseases or EBV+ LPD) are a group of disorders in which one or more types of lymphoid cells (a type of white blood cell), i.e. B cells, T cells, NK cells, and histiocytic-dendritic cells, are infected with the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV). This causes the infected cells to divide excessively, and is associated with the development of various non-cancerous, pre-cancerous, and cancerous lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). These LPDs include the well-known disorder occurring during the initial infection with the EBV, infectious mononucleosis, and the large number of subsequent disorders that may occur thereafter.
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare multisystem autosomal dominant genetic disease that causes non-cancerous tumours to grow in the brain and on other vital organs such as the kidneys, heart, liver, eyes, lungs and skin. A combination of symptoms may include seizures, intellectual disability, developmental delay, behavioral problems, skin abnormalities, lung disease, and kidney disease. TSC is caused by a mutation of either of two genes, TSC1 and TSC2, which code for the proteins hamartin and tuberin, respectively, with TSC2 mutations accounting for the majority and tending to cause more severe symptoms. These proteins act as tumor growth suppressors, agents that regulate cell proliferation and differentiation.
Aplastic anemia is a rare, non cancerous disorder where the blood marrow is unable to adequately produce blood cells required for survival. It is estimated that the incidence of aplastic anemia is 0.7-4.1 cases per million people worldwide with the prevalence between men and women being approximately equal. The incidence rate of aplastic anemia in Asia is 2-3 times higher than it is in the West, with the incidence of the disease in the United States is 300-900 cases per year. The disease most commonly affects adults aged 15-25 and over the age of 60, but the disease can be observed in all age groups.
New blood vessels are formed during the development of embryos, during wound repair and during the female reproductive cycle. An expanding tumour requires new blood vessels to deliver adequate oxygen to the cancer cells, and thus exploits these normal physiological processes for its benefit. To do this, the cancer cells acquire the ability to orchestrate production of new vasculature by activating the 'angiogenic switch'. In doing so, they control non-cancerous cells that are present in the tumor that can form blood vessels by reducing the production of factors that inhibit blood vessel production, and increasing the production of factors that promote blood vessel formation.
While the mode of action of ERα is not well established there is strong evidence supporting a role for miR-92 within the regulatory pathway of ERβ1. Profiling different breast cancer cell lines against non cancerous control cell lines demonstrated a significant inverse relationship between expression of ERβ1 and miR-92. In 2014, Barrow won Commonwealth silver in the 10 m synchro event, with Tonia Couch. That year, she also finished 4th in the individual 10 m at the World Championships, the best result ever for a British woman. At the European Championships in that year, she won the gold medal in the individual 10 m event, the first individual European gold medal for a British woman in 87 years (1927), and first individual medal of any colour since 1958. The pathogenesis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a matter of debate. There are ongoing investigations to determine whether LCH is a reactive (non-cancerous) or neoplastic (cancerous) process. Arguments supporting the reactive nature of LCH include the occurrence of spontaneous remissions, the extensive secretion of multiple cytokines by dendritic cells and bystander-cells (a phenomenon known as cytokine storm) in the lesional tissue, favorable prognosis and relatively good survival rate in patients without organ dysfunction or risk organ involvement. Physicians that specialize in PM&R; are usually called physiatrists (or rehabilitation medicine physicians). These doctors lead interdisciplinary teams, and they are specialists in the non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal problems and rehabilitation medicine. Physiatrists should ideally be a part of the cancer care team as they perform diagnostic evaluations, provide unique expertise in prescribing medications, perform injections and prescribe appropriate splints and other devices to treat non-cancerous conditions that are a result of cancer treatments or the cancer itself.
