In 1973, the FAA banned passenger airlines from supersonic flights over the US. The decision was a landmark — and largely forgotten — victory for the early environmental movement, making "noise pollution" a real issue for airplane designers to contend with thereafter.

In its own white paper published last October, the company laid out a radical vision for airborne commutes and identified technical challenges it said it wanted to help the nascent industry solve, like noise pollution, vehicle efficiency and limited battery life.

The groups argued that the plan, aimed at speeding up bus service, would divert car traffic — along with noise, pollution and vehicle vibrations — from 14th Street onto smaller residential streets nearby and would hurt the quality of life in their neighborhoods.
