Kodansha's first Color- edition Nihongo daijiten (1989) included over 175,000 headword entries. Although her Nihongo language skills were poor at the time, she still went on to try and eventually landed the job. She was later hired as a host reporter for the Oh Tokyo information program for the WINS Filipino-Japanese cable channel. It involved Nishiumi travelling to various tourist attractions in Tokyo and interviewing its locals in Japanese while she presents the show in Tagalog. The series ran for eight years starting from 2000 to 2008, until the channel's closure.

The schools were financed by both the Japanese immigrant community and the sugar planters they worked for, as they provided much needed childcare for the plantation laborers during their long workday. By 1920, the schools enrolled 98% of all Japanese American children in Hawaii. Statistics for 1934 showed 183 schools teaching a total of 41,192 students. On the mainland, the first Japanese language school was California's Nihongo Gakuin, established in 1903; by 1912, eighteen such schools had been set up in California alone.

Masahiko Minami (南 雅彦, Minami Masahiko) is a linguistics professor at San Francisco State University where he specializes in Japanese language and cross-cultural studies. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Japanese Linguistics. He is also coordinator for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験, Nihongo Nōryoku Shiken: JLPT) for Northern California. In addition, he served as President of the Foreign Language Association of Northern California (FLANC) and President of the Northern California Japanese Teachers’ Association (NCJTA).

Shogakukan intended for the Daijisen to directly compete with Iwanami's popular Kōjien desktop dictionary, which was a bestseller through three editions (1955, 1969, 1983). The Daijisen followed upon the success of two other Kōjien competitors, Sanseido's Daijirin ("Great forest of words", 1988, 1995, 2006) and Kōdansha's color-illustrated Nihongo Daijiten ("Great dictionary of Japanese", 1989, 1995). All of these dictionaries weigh around one kilogram and have about 3000 pages. The 1st edition Daijisen (1995) included over 220,000 entries and 6000 all-color illustrations and photographs.

The Issei, or first generation, were the first people to immigrate to the U.S. from Japan. Because of this, they wanted their children, the Nisei (of which Ruby was one), to learn Japanese language, culture, and religious traditions. The White River Buddhist Church was the second Buddhist church in King County In 1912, the White River Japanese Language School ("Nihongo Gakko") was opened at and under the auspices of the White River Buddhist Church. Only 63 ERF applications have been evaluated by the CPE, of which 36 PEIs like MDIS, EASB, SDH Institute, SAA Global Education, Coleman College, STEi Institute etc. have been registered for a period of four years ERF, and 26 PEIs have been registered for one year. The registration period awarded to a PEI is dependent on its degree of compliance with the Private Education Regulations. The Minnesota Japanese School (MNJS; ミネソタ日本語補習授業校 Minnesota Nihongo Hoshū Jugyō Kō) is a supplementary Japanese school for the children of Japanese citizens residing in Minnesota. The school was founded in 1978 and offers classes from pre-k to high school. Classes are held on Saturdays on the campus of Hope Presbyterian Church, located in Richfield, Minnesota, just south of Minneapolis. The Minnesota Japanese School is recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as teaching a curriculum equivalent to that of schools in Japan for children of similar age.

The is a keyboard design for inputting Japanese sentences on word processors and computers. It was invented by Fujitsu in the late 1970s and released in 1980 as a feature of the line of Japanese word processors the company sold, named OASYS, to make Japanese input easier, faster and more natural. It is popular among people who input large quantities of Japanese sentences, such as writers, playwrights, lawyers and so on, because of its ease of use and speed. The rights regarding the use of this design were transferred to Nihongo Nyuuryoku Consortium (Japanese Input Consortium), a technology sharing cooperative of interested companies, in 1989.

The share of OASYS in the Japanese word processor market reached 20 percent at one time (not all of OASYS were equipped with thumb-shift keyboard, though). But the adoption was slow to spread to other manufacturers' product lines. Although Fujitsu was open to adoption by other manufacturers, there was little incentive for them to adopt their rival's system in the (then) fiercely competitive environment of word processor market. It was only in 1989 when Nihongo Nyuuryoku Consortium (Japanese input consortium) was established with a participation of several companies, including Fujitsu, Sony, Apple Computer, Japan IBM and Panasonic, as the promotion body of thumb-shift.

Sanseido specifically created Daijirin to compete with Iwanami's profitable Kōjien dictionary, which was a longtime bestseller through three editions (1955, 1969, and 1983). Two other contemporary dictionaries directed at the Kōjien market share were Kōdansha's color-illustrated Nihongo Daijiten (日本語大辞典 "Great dictionary of Japanese", 1989) and Shōgakukan's Daijisen (大辞泉 "Great fountainhead of words", 1995, also edited by Akira Matsumura). The first edition of Daijirin (1988) had 220,000 headword entries and included encyclopedic content in numerous charts, tables, and illustrations. KZOO's programs include news, talk shows, and Japanese music. Most of it is original programming, but some of the talk shows are from Japan. Many of KZOO's current on-air staff have been with the station for decades, including Keiko Ura, host of an Okinawan language show on Sundays, who joined the station in early 1964; Maki Norris, one of the hosts of a popular daily talk show called "Moshi-Moshi Time," who has worked at KZOO since 1976; and Harumi "Danny" Oshita. The Japanese Association of Rosario provides facilities for a number of socio-cultural activities, such as classes of shodō (brush calligraphy), origami, karate, and taiko drum playing, eisa dancing, and more prominently Japanese language classes. A large part of the structure is devoted to the Japanese Language School (ロサリオ日本語学校 Rosario Nihongo Gakkō), which has a teaching schedule compatible with international requirements, preparing students who wish to do so for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. The school celebrates a yearly karaoke contest and a reading contest (whose selected winners may attend a national Japanese reading contest in Buenos Aires). The AJR has also hosted or sponsored picnics and sports contests, and participates representing Japan in the celebration devoted to the local immigrant communities (Encuentro y Fiesta Nacional de Colectividades), held in Rosario usually in November each year.

His writing at AOC 9th March 2020 is a Japanese traditional calligrapher (書家) and artist. In 2003 he obtained a permanent residence status as an artist for a special skill visa in Australia, and while teaching at RENCLUB, he is working to build a bridge between Australia and Japan through his large calligraphy performances, exhibitions, and personal exhibitions. He has collaborated on Hollywood movies such as The Wolverine (2013) and Gods of Egypt (2016), supported performances in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, a solo support exhibition for the Australian Forest Fire in 2019, and a performance for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. He has been very active with radio broadcasts on SBS in December 2013 and TV programme "Nihongo Daisuki", contributing monthly articles to the Nichigo Press since May 2008, performing at Matsuri all over Sydney and holding workshops in Gojyuan in Balmaine.
