Ball played parts of two seasons in the Majors; one game for the 1894 St. Louis Browns, and 32 games for the 1898 Baltimore Orioles. After his professional baseball career ended after 1913, he moved to Chicago, where he was a nightwatchman. Ball died at the age of 39 in Chicago of liver cirrhosis and peritonitis with pulmonary tuberculosis, and is interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Calcraft was born in Baddow, near Chelmsford, in 1800. He was a cobbler by trade, but had also worked as a nightwatchman at Reid's brewery in Clerkenwell, London. Bingo ends up in a cell with a man known as "Four-Eyes" (Wayne Robson), who befriends him and saves him from a knife incident (involving Lenny and Eli) in the laundry room. That night, they escape together, but Four-Eyes is not so lucky (he is shot non-fatally by a nightwatchman). Then Bingo walks for a long time and stops for a rest at a kind young woman (Tamsin Kelsey), Bunny's house.

The villagers suspect Robin Hood is the culprit, and the Sheriff of Nottingham uses this to turn the people against the outlaws, while Robin suspects the mysterious Nightwatchman, who leaves food and medicines for the poor. Marian finds her friend Joe Lacey, who says he had been called out of retirement to work as a castle guard. The Sheriff sends De Fourtnoy, the master-at-arms, to spread the word all around that Robin was the killer of the Bailiff.

On February 16, 1943 a fire destroyed the company's factory located at Weber and Breithaupt in Kitchener, killing nightwatchman Julius Eckstein and risking the future of the company, then known as C.H. The two founded Rage Against the Machine together, going on to become one of the most popular and influential rock acts of the 1990s. Dolphin could defend with the bat when needed, as exemplified by his vigil against Essex at Leyton in 1919. He scored 62 not out, and with E. In the season four episode, "The Front", Grampa admits to head of Itchy and Scratchy studios, Roger Myers Jr., that he worked as a cranberry silo nightwatchman for forty-years. The Simpson family will often do their best to avoid unnecessary contact with Grampa. A running gag in the show usually has Grampa in a cameo episode appearance where he wonders where everyone is or wishes to be noticed by the family. One example of this was when the family thought they left something on the plane in the episode "Fear of Flying", which revealed to be Grampa.

Klokker trialled for Warwickshire in 2005, while playing club cricket for Berkswell near Coventry, Warwickshire, and working for a stamp collecting company. He went on to make his first-class debut for Warwickshire in the 2006 County Championship against Sussex at Hove, following injuries to regular wicket-keepers Tim Ambrose and Tony Frost. This made him the fifth Dane to play county cricket; Ole Mortensen, Soren Henriksen, Thomas Hansen and Amjad Khan are the others. He took three catches in Sussex's first-innings, while in Warwickshire's first-innings he batted as a nightwatchman, scoring 40 before being dismissed by Luke Wright.

Warne is also third overall in the most international test ducks. Of players who have batted in more than 175 Test innings, his proportion of dismissals by being out bowled is the lowest, at under seven percent. In 2006 Warne and Glenn McGrath reportedly lost a bet of which bowler would be the first to get a Test century with fellow Australian bowler Jason Gillespie after Gillespie scored a record double-century as a nightwatchman against Bangladesh. Warne has also been a successful slip fielder, and is currently seventh in the list of most catches as a fielder in test cricket.

Sleep Now in the Fire made its live debut on September 11, 1999, at the Oxford Zodiac in England. After breaking up in late 2000, the three instrumentalists formed the band Audioslave with vocalist Chris Cornell. During their 2005 Out of Exile tour, the band played an instrumental version of "Bulls on Parade", followed immediately by "Sleep Now in the Fire" with Chris Cornell. After Audioslave broke up in 2007, Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman played a brief teaser riff consisting of the opening guitar riff and drumbeat after finishing a cover of American Band on the Fabled City tour.

Morello gave Riley a cassette with instrumental demo songs asking Riley to listen to it, write something and then get back to him. On the 2008 Nightwatchman tour, Riley made frequent appearances on stage to play the song "100 Little Curses" with Morello, which later became the first single released off their debut album. After playing the song, Morello confirmed that an album was in the works and would be out in early 2009. In the Spring of 2009, Street Sweeper Social Club announced a summer tour of the United States with Nine Inch Nails and the recently reunited Jane's Addiction.

Washbrook fell for 143 in the last over of the day, but England clearly had the better of the play, ending at 268/2 by stumps. Australia's bowlers were heavily criticised for their performance, which was seen as lethargic. When a wicket falls near the end of the day, a lower order (less capable) batter might be sent in to bat with the intention that the more capable players will be held in reserve until the next morning. The more capable players are then not exposed to the risk of dismissal while tired or in low-light conditions. The batter who is sent in is known as the nightwatchman. This tactic is also used because players are typically nervous and unsettled at the start of the innings before settling into their rhythm and becoming "set".

A mock ballad, it is a tortured variety of Franglais, with almost every line containing both English and French words. "La Teigne" is the story of a youth who has grown up "on the state" ("Il était de l'assistance") who can't make friends and who commits suicide before his 20th birthday.

Despite the exposure to other forms of media and the positive critical buzz for their third album, Audioslave did not tour behind the release. They went into hiatus to allow Cornell to complete "You Know My Name", the theme song for the 2006 James Bond film, Casino Royale, and Morello to pursue his own solo work under the moniker of the Nightwatchman. All of Audioslave's lyrics were written by Cornell, whilst all four members were credited with writing the music. Their songwriting process was described by Wilk as "more collaborative" and "satisfying" than Rage Against the Machine's, which was "a battle creatively".

The ABC Television Network used the latter song "You're the One" as the slogan for the network's national promotion in 1978, adapting it to say "We're the One!". To do this, ABC re-recorded the song with different lyrics after they struck an agreement with Morrison. Morrison says he always has five or ten songs in the works; if one isn't coming along, he rotates to the next one. Morrison's Grammy-winning song "You Decorated My Life" began as a poem written by Debbie Hupp, a Kentucky mother of five who began writing songs while working in a liquor distillery as a nightwatchman.

Meckiff removed Subba Row and Colin Cowdrey was run out by Ian Huntington after he stepped forward after an l.b.w. appeal. Tony Lock came in as nightwatchman and belted 44 in under an hour, which was appreciated by the 26,000 crowd more than Trevor Bailey's slow innings. Everybody made double figures except the first and last batsmen and the MCC totalled 396, Meckiff (4/69) being the best of the Victorian bowlers. Brian Statham and Peter Loader opened the bowling, but after "George" bowled opener Neil Crompton Laker and Lock were brought on and each took a wicket, Laker getting McDonald for 53 and Lock Allen Aylett for 23.

Vigar became a more regular fixture in the 1939 season, where, from June onwards, he began opening the batting on occasion. Playing in 14 County Championship matches, his return of 282 runs at 20.21 including a maiden century, 121 against Gloucestershire on 8 July. Vigar had originally been promoted up the order as a nightwatchman, however he survived to score his century the next day after the player he had been intended to protect, Jack O'Connor, had been dismissed for a duck. Vigar also took eight wickets during the season at 22.62, composed largely from a 4/20 against Cambridge University on 24 June to take Essex to an innings victory.

In December 1950, a few days before Christmas, the four students from Glasgow drove to London in two Ford Anglias, a journey which took them eighteen hours. On arrival in London they had a brief meeting at a Lyons Corner House and decided to make an immediate attempt at removing the Stone from the Abbey. Later that day Ian Hamilton hid under a trolley in the Abbey, but was caught by a nightwatchman after the Abbey doors had been closed, briefly questioned, and then let go. The following day Vernon and Stuart returned to Westminster Abbey and learned some information on the watchmen's shifts.

Although it had been known how to prepare carbon monoxide since 1776, it was not at first recognised that carbon monoxide poisoning was the mechanism of death and injury from stoves burning carbonaceous fuels. A coroner's inquest into the death in 1838 of James Trickey, a nightwatchman who had spent all night by a new type of charcoal burning stove in St Michael, Cornhill, concluded that the poison involved was carbonic acid (that is, carbon dioxide) rather than carbon monoxide. Both Bird and Snow gave evidence to the inquest supporting poisoning by carbonic acid. Bird himself started to suffer ill effects while collecting air samples from the floor near the stove.

The song has been performed by musicians such as Utah Phillips, Pete Seeger, Leonard Cohen, and was redone by Emcee Lynx and The Nightwatchman.

A new collaboration between de la Rocha and DJ Shadow, the song "March of Death" was released for free online in 2003 in protest against the imminent invasion of Iraq. As part of the collaboration de la Rocha released a statement which included the following: The 2004 soundtrack Songs and Artists that Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11 included one of the collaborations with Reznor, "We Want It All". This album also contained "No One Left", the debut recording by former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello as The Nightwatchman. On October 7, 2005, de la Rocha returned to the stage with new material, performing with Son Jarocho band Son de Madera.

The family, which had settled in the city's tough northern districts of Barbès and Saint-Denis, found little work in the region, and in the mid-1960s moved to the northern Marseille suburb of La Castellane in the 16th arrondissement of Marseille. His father worked as a warehouseman and nightwatchman at a department store, often on the night shift, while his mother was a housewife. Bond's Test career was fleeting. He took two wickets (including Wally Hammond) in Western Province's match against the England team in 1938-39 and scored 13 in each innings. He was then picked for the first Test of a five-match series. When England batted, he was the sixth bowler used and was given only two overs, in which he failed to take a wicket and conceded 16 runs; in the South African innings, the unsuccessful promotion of a nightwatchman meant that he batted at No 9 instead of No 3 or No 4 as he generally did for Western Province, and he was dismissed first ball, one of three first-ball dismissals in the innings.

The album The Fabled City was released on September 30, 2008. Two songs off the record, "Midnight in the City of Destruction" (about New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina) and "King of Hell" (written about Guantanamo Bay), had previously been leaked on The Nightwatchman MySpace or performed during live sets. So far The Satellite Party's Carl Restivo has been confirmed to be part of The Freedom Fighters as a second guitarist. To promote the new album Morello and the band appeared both on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and on Late Night with Conan O'Brien before heading out on 'The Fabled City tour', an eighteen stop tour in the United States.

His career best score was 72, one of only three innings he made of 50 or more, and it came in the match against Worcestershire in 1965. He was never picked for a one-day match, where Warwickshire preferred to field an all-seam attack. His obituary in Wisden Cricketers' Almanack in 1997 states that "his application never quite matched his natural gifts" and also that he was barred from acting as nightwatchman by Warwickshire after being out hooking at fast bowler Fred Trueman. In 1966, in an attempt to bolster their spin bowling, Warwickshire signed the Scottish cricketer Jimmy Allan, who had not played regular first-class cricket for almost 10 years.

His batting also improved and in the match against Nottinghamshire at Old Trafford Cricket Ground he put on 161 for the seventh wicket with Simmons, making an unbeaten 74 himself, his highest first-class score to date. Without that innings, however, Lyon's batting average for the season would still have been below 10 runs an innings. The batting was better in 1979 and Lyon's aggregate of 313 runs and average of 22.35 were his best in first-class cricket. The first attempt to establish professional policing in Baltimore was in 1784, nearly 60 years after the founding of the colonial town and eight years after United States independence. The city authorized a night watch and a force of day constables to enforce town laws. Nightwatchman George Workner was the first law enforcement officer to be killed in the city; he was stabbed during an escape attempt by nine inmates at Baltimore City Jail on March 14, 1808. The Department was founded in its current form (with uniforms and firearms) in 1853 by the Maryland state legislature "to provide for a better security for life and property in the City of Baltimore".

Underwood was almost unplayable on damp wickets, but on dry tracks he would often push the ball through a little quicker and flatter, not wanting to risk being hit over his head, which he always hated. Oddly, he rarely completed a whole Test series for England, as a succession of England captains would switch to bigger turners of the ball, such as Norman Gifford. He scored his first and only first-class century (111) at the age of 39, in his 591st first-class match in July 1984. Moreover, in just his fourth match for his new county, against Middlesex at the Imperial Ground, Bristol, he was sent in again as nightwatchman and this time made 106, the only century of his first-class career. Morello was a strong supporter of the 2006 United States immigration reform protests around the US. Morello played as the Nightwatchman at MacArthur Park in Los Angeles and has featured many articles on AOJ. He was picked as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in the 1935 edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. In 1934-35, he was chosen, with his county colleague Eric Hollies, for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) tour of the West Indies and there he played his only Test matches. He took more wickets, 17, than any other England bowler and also hit the highest score, 49, in England's innings of 226 in the third Test match, having been sent in as a nightwatchman. But the tour as a whole was not a success, with the West Indies winning the four-match series by two to one, and Paine was not picked for any further Test matches.

After several months, he committed an armed robbery and was sentenced to 5 years in the penitentiary, but again resumed his "high power" position, during which he killed one and permanently crippled three others who attempted to flee. A circuit judge refused him parole but after he killed four prisoners attempting to escape in October 1933, he was released on parole for a fourth time 8 months later. Atherton and Gatting both went in the opening overs to McGrath, but Thorpe and Gooch (37) added 72 before the latter and Crawley departed in quick succession to Mark Waugh. He has constantly troubled Brian Lara in Test cricket, having dismissed him on 8 occasions. In the first test of the Bank Alfalah Test Series versus Pakistan in Karachi, Nel became the 11th South African to reach the milestone of 100 dismissals in Test cricket, when he dismissed the Pakistani nightwatchman, Mohammad Asif on 5 October 2007. In early 2008, paceman of colour Charl Langeveldt was controversially selected in the Test team for tour of India, at the expense of Nel. This was widely believed to be due to an order from Cricket South Africa to select more non-white players in the team as part of its transformation policy, rather than performance.

Dropping out of the Yorkshire side, he joined Warwickshire for 1957 and played fairly regularly in 1958 after Hollies retired. Though he took just 49 wickets (and only 25 of them in Championship matches), he scored his only first-class century in what proved to be his last season: going in as a nightwatchman, he made 116 and shared in a second-wicket stand of 209 with Fred Gardner in the match against Glamorgan at Coventry. Leadbeater is a rarity as an England Test cricketer, in that he was never awarded a county cap. After leaving first-class cricket, Leadbeater played regularly for Almondbury Cricket Club in the Huddersfield Cricket League, taking over 1,000 wickets before he retired at the age of 68.

The following morning saw the wicket of Rory Burns fall early, but a 145-run second wicket partnership between Leach and Jason Roy suggested that England might be able to set an intimidating second innings total for Ireland. However, after the fall of Roy's wicket, the only batsmen beside Leach to reach a half-century, Leach ended up eight runs short of becoming the first England nightwatchman to score a century, falling prey to the nervous nineties after batting for more than four hours. Clapham moved from Cambridge to Bradford where he worked for printer Lund Humphries, and then, in 1938, to the Kynoch Press in Birmingham which was part of the huge ICI conglomerate. He was allegedly told, when he commenced his employment that he would struggle to advance in the company as he was neither a chemist nor an engineer and yet he was to remain in the employ of the chemicals giant, in a variety of capacities, until 1974. During the war he invented an isotope diffusion barrier, and consequently found himself seconded for four years to the Tube Alloys Project which was Britain's first attempt to build an atomic bomb. He had been seconded from Kynoch to become nightwatchman at a munitions factory.

A second wicket for Moeen Ali soon followed, as he caught Australia captain Michael Clarke off his own bowling. A 50-run partnership between Adam Voges and Shane Watson for the fifth wicket was ended shortly before the end of the day, with Voges caught by Anderson off Stokes for 31, leaving Australia on 264/5 at the close of play. Having opened the innings, he made his top Test score of 234 and helped to set a world-record 405 run fifth wicket partnership with Don Bradman, a record that still stands today. In 2004, Audioslave was among the nominees for the 46th Grammy Awards: "Like a Stone" was nominated for "Best Hard Rock Performance" and Audioslave for "Best Rock Album." They spent the rest of 2004 on break from touring and working on the second album. This gave Morello time to concentrate on his solo project, The Nightwatchman, and also to take an active part in political activities. Cornell had time to focus on his personal life; after his divorce from his first wife was finalized, he married Vicky Karayiannis, a Paris-based publicist he met during Audioslave's first European tour. His psychiatrist eventually admitted him to a psychiatric hospital following a diagnosis of depression. Marsden credits his stint in the psychiatric hospital as an important period in his life: After his stint in hospital, Marsden continued to take on many different jobs, and through his 20s Marsden worked in as many as 32 different jobs, including an abattoir, working in a mortuary, delivering pizzas, working as a motorbike courier, working as a nightwatchman, selling encyclopaedias and working with chickens. Following this period of drifting, Marsden decided, in 1978, to try a teaching career. Marsden claims to have always had an inkling that he may try teaching, and from the first day of his teaching course Marsden was confident that this was the career that suited him.

He married Adelena Esther Frances "Lena" Mathews (1884-) on 10 August 1904. He was divorced from her, and granted custody of their one-year- old child, on the grounds of her "infidelity" (at the time of the hearing his occupation was given as "nightwatchman"); Turnbull's older brother, Sydney Alexander Duncan Turnbull (1880-) — the father of Lena'a second child, Gladys Victoria Alice Turnbull, born in 1907 — was cited as the correspondent (and had costs awarded against him).

During this tour, Morello has been joining Harper onstage for a cover of Bob Dylan's "Masters of War", on which he plays the electric guitar in the style for which he's best known. Morello has presided over a Hotel Café residency in L.A. since November 2007, which has featured many of his musical cohorts, including Serj Tankian, Perry Farrell, Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Shooter Jennings, Nuno Bettencourt, Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, Jill Sobule, Boots Riley, Alexi Murdoch, Wayne Kramer of MC5 and others. He played as a specialist seam bowler, although he did make 28 in his only Test innings as nightwatchman. His Test selection came after taking 13 wickets in the 1985-86 One Day International World Series Cup, although he had only played two first class games in the preceding two seasons. Gillespie took one wicket for 79, which was not enough to keep his place, and after three wickets at a bowling average just above 60 in the 1985-86 home series against Australia he was dropped. He has toured with Rihanna, Tom Morello's Freedom Fighter Orchestra supporting The Nightwatchman, Perry Farrell's Satellite Party, and Street Sweeper Social Club, who toured with Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction. Most recently, Carl was the production supervisor on Tom Morello’s latest album The Atlas Underground. Released in the fall of 2018, the album featured Portugal the Man, Marcus Mumford, Knife Party, Pretty Lights, Steve Aoki, RZA, GZA, Killer Mike, Big Boi, Whethan, Vic Mensa, and himself on the song “Vigilante Nocturno”, which he also produced as well as “Lucky One”, featuring K.Flay. Additionally, Carl is Morello’s Music Director and he recently wrapped a domestic and international tour with dates opening up for Muse.

Agnew's best first-class bowling figures were 9 for 70 and he took six ten-wicket hauls in 218 matches. In the 1988 Cricketer of the Year editorial on Agnew, Wisden noted that "his pace comes from a whippy wrist action and co-ordination ... Morello started playing guitar in the mid 80's in the band Electric Sheep together with future Tool guitarist Adam Jones on bass. As the Nightwatchman, Morello has often performed alongside Boots Riley, frontman of the Coup; also, he produced and performed on a track for the Coup's 2006 release Pick a Bigger Weapon. In July 2006, it was reported that Morello and Riley were to collaborate on a project called Street Sweepers (see section above). Morello appears in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock as a "guitar boss" (the first of 3 in the career mode of the game) in a night club. Beating him in a one-on-one battle (playing an original composition he recorded for the game) will unlock him as a playable character and will result in the player and Morello playing the master track of "Bulls on Parade" as an encore immediately following the battle.

On the back of a three-Test whitewash tour of South Africa, but a 3–2 loss in ODI matches (including the famous fifth ODI, in which Australia scored a world record of 4/434, only for South Africa to chase it down with a world record 9/438), Australia came to Bangladesh to play two Tests and three One-day International matches, without any warm-up touring matches. Australia won the two-Test series 2–0. Chidgey batted normally at No 11 throughout his first-class career, but his highest score came in the 1909 season when he was sent in as nightwatchman at No 3 against Yorkshire at Bath and made 45, his partnership with the dour Len Braund enabling Somerset to draw the match. He returned to Somerset for the 1919 season after the First World War, but the county then cut the number of professionals in its team to two in the 1920 season, and he did not play at all that year; he returned, however, for some games in 1921 before leaving finally. In 1925 and 1926, he was on the first-class umpires' list, and he was picked, alongside Sailor Young, for the fourth Test between England and Australia on the 1926 tour; the game, at Manchester, was ruined by rain with less than two full innings completed.

The band was then chosen as the main guest supporting act on the Foo Fighters' fall headlining tour in support of Wasting Light, which took place in September, after which Rise Against headlined their own Canadian tour with supporting acts Flogging Molly and The Black Pacific. Between November 2-13, 2011, the band played their first UK headlining tour in 2 years, supported by Tom Morello: The Nightwatchman and Polar Bear Club, the band also played one date in Scotland during the tour, and added an additional date in Rome, Italy on November 15. In December, the band played a series of Christmas special radio festival shows. The band's first tour of 2012 was another US headlining leg, which was supported by A Day to Remember and The Menzingers, with Glassjaw also joining as a special guest supporting act at the New York City show on February 3.

Resuming after lunch, as the surface began to improve, Ireland's openers brought the total to 45 for two before the partnership of Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie brought Ireland's lead to 42 at tea, thanks in part to a rapid half century by Balbirnie. Good spells by Stuart Broad and Olly Stone, who each took three wickets after the interval, allowed England to remain in the game, with Ireland losing five wickets for just 17 runs and falling to 149 for seven. Also a useful batsman in the lower order, Slade appeared to have a chance of a significant career. However, the arrival of another left-arm spinner, Norman Gifford, in the Worcestershire team in 1960 began to restrict Slade's opportunities. He played only twice in 1961 and when he did make the First Eleven, he found himself frequently used as the sixth bowler. The registration of Basil D'Oliveira in 1964 further restricted Slade's prospects. After taking 71 wickets in 1963, he became a bit player in the county team. However, he toured Pakistan with the Commonwealth XI in 1963-64, playing in all three matches against Pakistan and taking more wickets than any other Commonwealth XI bowler.Wisden 1965, pp. 849–51. He was an important member of Worcestershire's Championship-winning sides of 1964 and 1965, though in each season he played only a handful of games. He made 634 runs in 1969, scoring 125 against Leicestershire at Grace Road after going in at number three as nightwatchman.

After a seven-year hiatus, Rage Against the Machine reunited in January 2007 at the Coachella Festival and have has continued to perform at multiple live venues since, however, according to Morello, Rage Against the Machine has no plans to record new material. In 2003 Morello created the identity of The Nightwatchman, an "artist of the people," when a desire to return to political activism in his music struck him, after over a year of playing non-activist rock in Audioslave. Morello first began playing political acoustic folk music in a Los Angeles coffeehouse before a small crowd, and soon after went on Billy Bragg's Tell Us the Truth tour. Soon after finishing her training in Kolkata, Goswami was called up to the Bengal cricket team. At the age of 19, she made her international debut in 2002 in a one-day International Match against England in Chennai. Her Test debut came on 14 January 2002 against England in Lucknow. Goswami along with Mithali Raj guided Indian Women’s Cricket team to first Test series win England in 2006–07 season. During the same season, Goswami helped Indian Women Cricket team to get their first victory against England, making a fifty as nightwatchman in the first Test at Leicester and taking her career best match figures of 10 for 78–5 for 33 and 5 for 45 – in the second test at Taunton. In 2007 Jhulan was a member of Asian squad in the Afro-Asia tournament in India and also won the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year (when no Indian male cricketer bagged an individual award).

Doug Wright was the terror of the County Championship for running through side on just such wickets and Hammond also had Peter Smith and the part-time spin of Ikin, Compton and Hutton. Sid Barnes and Arthur Morris only batted for 9 minutes when the rain came down and the teams left the field. On their return Bill Edrich (3/71) made the ball kick up with his fast bowling, and Morris was bowled while taking evasive action. Ian Johnson came in as a nightwatchman and he and Barnes angered the crowd by launching into a series of bad light appeals – up to 12 were counted – before the umpires gave way and play was ended with an hour to spare.pp. 32–33, Cary This gamesmanship ensured that Australia would not have to play on a sticky wicket like England at Brisbane and allowed Bradman to rest his leg until play resumed on the Monday.

In the sport of cricket, a nightwatchman is a lower-order batsman who comes in to bat higher up the order than usual near the end of the day's play. The nightwatchman's job is to maintain most of the strike until the close of play (remaining in overnight after the end of the day's play, hence the name) and so protect other, more capable batsmen from being out cheaply in what may be a period of tiredness or in poor light at the end of the day, and then again the following morning when the batsmen have not yet ‘got their eye in', or when the early-morning conditions may favour the bowlers. The theory is that losing two top-order batsmen in quick succession would be worse than losing one top- order batsman and a tailender. However the nightwatchman's effort is not considered to be wasted, nor are they expected to play foolishly; otherwise they would not last very long.

Andrew Flintoff had stressed to his batsmen before the match the importance of going on and making a big innings once a half century had been reached. It was to some amusement that he scored exactly 50 in both innings of this match. England were bowled out for 191 late in the day, and some commentators believed the opportunity for them to force a win had perhaps been lost. For the Indian bowlers, the spinners were the main performers, with Kumble and Harbhajan taking 6 wickets between them. India started their second innings needing 313 to win, a large target given the conditions of the pitch. The final day started off with India on 18/1 (having lost Irfan Pathan late in the previous day) and the first session was seen out relatively safely, with only 2 wickets falling, one of those being that of the nightwatchman Kumble. Scoring was very slow, and Dravid had faced over 50 deliveries for 9 runs by the lunch interval. Tendulkar had scored more freely, but overall the score at lunch was 75/3.

Cowdrey (57) opened the batting with Geoff Boycott, who retired hurt for 9 when the score was 23/0. Greg Chappell took 3/41 (and four catches), then Ashley Mallett 4/59 and Terry Jenner (2/72) span their way through the English batsmen. Knott made 42 and Boycott returned at 164/7 and made a typically rearguard 42 not out as the team struggled to 238. South Australia batted again and Ken Shuttleworth bowled Richards for 23, before Greg Chappell (102) showed his style and helped by Ken Cunningham (60) and Ashley Woodcock (52) took the score to 278/4. Bob Willis took 4/81, 3 of them caught by Bob Taylor, to reduce them to 287/7, but Ashley Mallett hit 42 not out and allowed Ian Chappell to declare again at 338/7 to set the MCC 398 to win just before stumps on the third day. Jeff Hammond (3/61) dismissed Colin Cowdrey, nightwatchman Peter Lever and Keith Fletcher for 29/3, but Geoff Boycott (92) entrenched himself at one end, adding 62 with fellow Yorkshireman John Hampshire (13) before both were out for 135/4.

The fourth match of the Australia series was dominated by two players: Bradman, who made an unbeaten 299 in Australia's first innings and Clarrie Grimmett, who took 14 wickets in the match. Bell was once again the most successful South African bowler and for the third match in succession took five wickets in an innings: he finished with figures of five for 142, though he failed once again to dismiss Bradman and did not take his wicket during the series. The fifth and final Test produced a similarly convincing victory for the Australians as all the other Tests, though the circumstances were very different: the South Africans were dismissed for totals of just 36 and 45 to lose by an innings to a total of just 153. Bell took three wickets for 52 runs, including the Australian captain Bill Woodfull for a first-ball duck; he also went in as nightwatchman in South Africa's second innings at the end of the first day (two innings of the match having already been completed) and stayed longer at the wicket, 45 minutes, than any of his colleagues in either innings except for Syd Curnow.
