In the 1970s, Osmel Sousa undertook advising selected contestants, many of whom went on to win the Miss Venezuela crown, at the same time he started designing nightgowns for most of the contestants. His first success was María Antonieta Cámpoli, who became Miss Venezuela in 1972, and went on to be 2nd runner-up in the Miss Universe contest.Miss Universe Coverage 1972 In October 1981 Ignacio Font Coll died and Osmel Sousa became the president of the Miss Venezuela Organization. During his thirty-year career he has been considered to be the driving force behind the large number of Miss Venezuelas who go on to become Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss International and Miss Earth.

The Trommelweiber are a group of men dressed in women's nightgowns, who go from inn to inn banging on drums, pots and pans, and enjoy the free food and beer. According to the tale, the tradition of the Trommelweiber was initiated in the last century as a way for men who frequented pubs to poke fun at their wives: at the time, women were not allowed in such establishments and often resorted to banging on pots and pans outside of the premises in order to get their husbands to come out, come home and dry up. Inns, pubs and restaurants are heavily frequented during the Heilige Drei Faschingstage (the three 'holy' days of Fasching) by costumed revelers known as Maschgera.

After her training, she worked with the British Council as an assistant manager at the Overseas' Students Centre, Portland Palace, London, Whilst a student in London, she decided to specialize in the field of dressmaking and therefore familiarized herself with fashion organisations. Mrs Asmah gathered a few machines and started making nightgowns and petticoat in Birmingham. When the Takoradi MP finally came to settle in Ghana, she registered a factory as a partnership and later in 1975 incorporated it as a limited liability Company As an advocate of women emancipation, Mrs Asmah supported the Tarkwa women Generating income (TWIGA) to secure financial assistance to manufacture palm oil. When the Social Welfare Department set up the Women Training institute at the Takoradi Neighborhood Center to train girls in vocational subjects, she consented and readily offered her workshop to train young women in the area.

Another highlight was the staging of an all-ages version of the Sasha Velour's popular monthly drag show Nightgowns. A surprising non-drag vendor booth was The Warwick Rowers project, a gay/straight alliance of the men rowers of the University of Warwick Boat Club. Since 2009, the athletic men have posed nude for calendars and other products, shipped to eighty countries, raising over $1 million, with their campaign to fight homophobia in sports reaching 140 countries. A first for the New York convention was the Kids Zone, with Drag Queen Story Hour, a bouncy house, and arts and crafts. There was an abundance of kids, including drag kids, some wanted to meet “two of the most well-known drag kids on the scene — Lactatia and Desmond is Amazing.” Drag historian Joe E. Jeffreys said about the trend, “the rise of drag children is predictable”.

On 22 December 2011, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a letter to manufacturers, distributors, importers and retailers reminding the apparel industry of the enforcement policy and their obligations associated with children’s sleepwear and loungewear. The Commission’s regulations define the term children’s sleepwear to include any product of wearing apparel (in sizes 0-14), such as nightgowns, pajamas, or similar or related items, such as robes, intended to be worn primarily for sleeping or activities related to sleeping, except: (1) diapers and underwear; (2) infant garments, sized for a child nine months of age or younger; and (3) tight-fitting garments that meet specific maximum dimensions. All children’s sleepwear and loungewear sold in the US are required to comply with the Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA) using the standards for Flammability of Children’s Sleepwear 16 C.F.R. Parts 1615 and 1616. Moreover, they have to comply with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) requirements including tracking labels, a certificate of compliance, meeting requirements for lead content and surface coatings, and meeting requirements for phthalates.
