As might be guessed from the terms, neats use formal methods - such as logic or pure applied statistics - exclusively. Scruffies are hackers, who will cobble together a system built of anything - even logic. Neats care whether their reasoning is both provably sound and complete and that their machine learning systems can be shown to converge in a known length of time. Scruffies would like their learning to converge too, but they are happier if empirical experience shows their systems working than to have mere equations and proofs showing that they ought to.

Propeller Records was an independent record label formed in Boston, MA, in 1981. The label, a collective, was formed by a number of Boston bands, including The Wild Stares, People in Stores, The Neats, CCCPTV and V;. Later members include Dangerous Birds, Art Yard, 21-645, Chinese Girlfriends, White Women, and Lori Green. The label was known for its anti-corporate, consumerist approach, labeling all releases with the phrase "Propeller Product" and the consumer-friendly admonition "pay no more than $2.00". The initial release, Propeller Product EP, featuring The Neats, People in Stores, CCCPTV and The Wild Stares, was a success in indy-label terms, achieving distribution through Rounder Records and selling over 5,000 copies.

Neat and scruffy are labels for two different types of artificial intelligence (AI) research. Neats consider that solutions should be elegant, clear and provably correct. Scruffies believe that intelligence is too complicated (or computationally intractable) to be solved with the sorts of homogeneous system such neat requirements usually mandate. Much success in AI came from combining neat and scruffy approaches.

The reigning champion and the national champion teams of the top 4 nations at the 2007-08 EuroFloorball Cup automatically qualify. In 2008 the nations were Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic. The remaining three teams are decided in regional neats. In Group C, the runners-up to the top team in Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic played for a spot in the finals.

Ace of Hearts Records is a Boston-based independent label founded in 1978 by Rick Harte, who also produced all its releases. It recorded and released Boston area post-punk and garage rock bands in the early 1980s, including Mission of Burma, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Roger Miller, Neats, Lyres, The Real Kids, John Felice, Nervous Eaters, Del Fuegos, The Neighborhoods, Martin Paul, Wild Stares, Infliktors, Classic Ruins, Crab Daddy, Chaotic Past, Tomato Monkey, and Heat from a DeadStar.

Shortly after, the band landed a recording contract with the newly formed Labor Records. The band recorded demos of two songs, "Children Remember" and "Yellow Light" at Sorcerer Sound to prepare for a forthcoming EP. Producer Peter Ivers oversaw the recording of further tracks at Minot Sound in White Plains, New York. Their first concert after the recording was supporting Bauhaus in early 1981. The band's final performance was in Boston, with The Neats, before disbanding thereafter.

The Neats were a Boston rock band that existed from the late 1970s to early 1990s. They first recorded for the independent Propeller label, which in 1981 released the song, "Six", a swirling, Vox-washed slab of garage rock reminiscent of Question Mark & the Mysterians. The following year, their well- received debut, 7-song EP, The Monkey's Head in the Corner of the Room, was released on Boston's Ace of Hearts Records. It was voted one of the best EPs of 1982 in the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop poll.

Various sources and accounts have referred to Neatsville as a village, as a postal village, as a hamlet and as a town at different times in its history. The community was settled in the early 1800s by the Neats, with Randolph Neat being the first to acquire land there. As it expanded, the community grew to encompass several stores, a hotel, a doctor's office, mills, a sawmill, distilleries, a saloon, a salt works, a cooper shop, a carding machine, and a Masonic Lodge. It was incorporated as a town on February 23, 1847.

AI researchers began to develop and use sophisticated mathematical tools more than they ever had in the past., There was a widespread realization that many of the problems that AI needed to solve were already being worked on by researchers in fields like mathematics, economics or operations research. The shared mathematical language allowed both a higher level of collaboration with more established and successful fields and the achievement of results which were measurable and provable; AI had become a more rigorous "scientific" discipline. describe this as nothing less than a "revolution" and "the victory of the neats".

This exposure dramatically increased the much need attention to the band and with the help of management, and a real booking agent they began touring throughout the United States playing with the Replacements, Young Fresh Fellows, Los Lobos, The Bangles, The Fleshtones, Dash Rip Rock, Del Fuegos, Scruffy the Cat, Dinosaur Jr., Hoodu Gurus, Long Ryders, Forgotten Rebels, Lyres, and Neats. Their second LP, Everybody Does It recorded in the summer of 1985 was delivered to Homestead Records in December. It would not see the light of day until June 1986. Gerad Cosley, the new president of Homestead Records buried the band with delay after delay.

Plat envisaged using this jelly either as the base for soup, or "neat" as a concentrated food. Reconstitution as soup simply involved dissolving a piece of the jelly in hot water to make "good broath", and, because jelly and water alone would be rather bland, adding such flavourings as were available or to taste – sugar, salt, liquorice, aniseed, or other "convenient spice". Plat emphasised the utility of the jelly as field rations, for "a soldier may satisfie his hunger herwith, whilst hee is in his march". He recommended that a leg of beef or veal be boiled with every 6 or 8 neats' (cows') feet to produce a jelly which would more easily dissolve in the mouth.

People in Stores (aka PiS) was an American, Boston-based band, from the formative punk/new wave era of the early 1980s. Playing with Mission of Burma, Wild Stares, Vacuumheads, CCCP-TV, V; and The Neats, PiS performed its own unique brand of original post-punk pop music in storied clubs around Boston such as the Underground, The Rat, Storyville, and The Channel. Referred to as "the clipboard crowd" by Dan Salzman of the Maps, Art Yard and Christmas fame, PiS had a uniquely strange and intellectual approach to the crafting of a pop song. The band recorded a single, an EP and contributed to the Propeller Records compilation tape during its recording days.

Saxon-period Welsh ale was a heady, strong beverage, made with spices such as cinnamon, ginger and clove as well as herbs and honey. Bragawd was often prepared in monasteries, with Tintern Abbey and the Friary of Carmarthen producing the beverage until Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in 1536.

Clothing was somewhat standardized by 1623 when it was made possible for sailors to purchase clothing at fixed prices from the Navy Commissioners. The selection was not extensive; items included: Monmouth capps, Red Caps, Yarne Stockings, Irish Stockings, Blew Shirts, White Shirts, Cotton Waistcoats, Cotton Drawers, Neats Leather Shoes, Blew Neck Clothes, Canvas Suites, Ruggs of one breadth, and Blew Suites. Until 1664, sailors that were pressed into the Navy were not given any clothing, forced to use what clothes they had on their backs until accumulating several months of pay when they could then buy clothing.

They have organized several benefits, a PanMass Challenge benefit on June 10, 2011 at the Paradise in Boston Ma. with the Neats, Last Stand, Band 19 and the Classic Ruins, a benefit for their friend Peter Sisco on July 27, 2012 @ Johnny D's in Somerville Ma. with the Flies, Bristols, Piranha Brothers, Sourpuss, Hired Men, White Dynomite, Lenny Lashley, Sourpuss, New Frustrations and the Lucky 88's. They have also organized another benefit for @s the legendary TT the bears on March 20, 2015, with Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents, the Other Girls, The Hired Men and the Gypsy Moths. They can still be heard on XM Radio and in Boston on MIT radio WMBR.

SHRDLU, which could successfully answer queries and carry out actions in a simplified world consisting of blocks and a robot arm., , SHRDLU, while enormously successful, could not be scaled up into a useful natural language processing system, however, because it had no overarching design and maintaining a larger version of the program proved to be impossible; it was too scruffy to be extended. Other AI laboratories (of which the largest were Stanford, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Edinburgh) focused on logic and formal problem solving as a basis for AI. These institutions supported the work of John McCarthy, Herbert A. Simon, Allen Newell, Donald Michie, Robert Kowalski, and many other "neats". The contrast between MIT's approach and other laboratories was also described as a "procedural/declarative distinction".

Limbo Race played their first show in 1980 at the legendary Underground, a rock club in Allston, MA, notable for being one of the first venues to feature acts from the burgeoning post-punk and experimental music scene in Boston. For two years, the band played in other small Boston and Cambridge venues including Cantones, Mavericks, The Rathskellar ("The Rat"), The Club, the Inn Square Men's Bar and in alternative venues along Thayer Street in Boston's South End. Among the many Boston bands that Limbo Race shared bills with were Someone & The Somebodies, Mission of Burma, The New Models, V;, Art Yard, The Neats, The Proletariat, The Neighborhoods, Lou Miami & The Kozmetix, Native Tongue, The Young Snakes, 'til tuesday, The New Models, and The Del Fuegos. Drummer Peter Keaveney left the band in early 1981 and was replaced by Mark Poulin.

A ballad, dating from about 1615, called "The Cucking of a Scold", illustrates the punishment inflicted to women whose behaviour made them be identified as "a Scold": :Then was the Scold herself, :In a wheelbarrow brought, :Stripped naked to the smock, :As in that case she ought: :Neats tongues about her neck :Were hung in open show; :And thus unto the cucking stool :This famous scold did go. The cucking-stool, or Stool of Repentance, has a long history, and was used by the Saxons, who called it the ' or scolding stool. It is mentioned in Domesday Book as being in use at Chester, being called ', a name which seems to confirm the first of the derivations suggested in the footnote below. Tied to this stool the woman - her head and feet bare - was publicly exposed at her door or paraded through the streets amidst the jeers of the crowd.

As but one memorable example, The Cure performed their first time in Boston at the venue, playing virtually the entire Boys Don't Cry album before little more than a hundred people the night of Robert Smith's 21st birthday which MIT film and video student Jan Crocker recorded along with warmup Mission of Burma. "The effect on the local Boston scene was even more dramatic," Simmons also wrote. The Underground provided support for a mix of Boston bands: among others, the teen rock of Boys Life and The Outlets, the punk-funk of the Suade Cowboys and Prince Charles and the City Beat Band, the new wave of Peter Dayton and The Neats and, most of all, the art-rock of Mission of Burma (whom Coffman would later manage), the all female group Bound and Gagged, and Someone and the Somebodies. In addition to nurturing homegrown talent, honed by the soundwork of Michael Whittaker, who later worked for many of the clubs headliners like Bush Tetras, Raybeats, and later toured with The Raincoats, Fad Gadget, Wah and others, the Underground booked many bands from across the U.S. and abroad.
