In the 1920s he made trips to Young Pioneer summer camps, to study children and their special plasticity and expression in natural surroundings. Soviet illustrators had virtually revolutionized the approach to children's book illustration.

Kailash Ashram, Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh, established by Dhanraj Giri An ashram would traditionally, but not necessarily in contemporary times, be located far from human habitation, in forests or mountainous regions, amidst refreshing natural surroundings conducive to spiritual instruction and meditation. Bird watchers can delight in catching sight of several species such as hornbill, little cormorant, night heron, cotton teal, open billed stork, and many others. The Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel are the two lakes situated within the sanctuary and are worth visiting for their scenic appeal. Along with abundant wildlife and natural surroundings, Kokrajhar also has some sightseeing locations. Superb Lyrebird in courtship display The inspiration for The Display came to Robert Helpmann in a dream in which he saw his friend, Hollywood actress Katharine Hepburn, naked on a dais surrounded by lyrebirds. Several years earlier, in 1955, Hepburn (then touring Australia with the Old Vic) took Helpmann to Sherbrooke Forest within Victoria's Dandenong Ranges to see his first lyrebirds in their natural surroundings. Helpmann was "fascinated for hours" by the birds' fanciful mating dance, referred to in ornithology as a courtship display, which Helpmann chose for the ballet's title. The 12th Theater Festival began on March 27, again on the World Theatre Day, with a spectacular show by the Italian Studio Festi ensemble. Studio Festi is known across the world with their fascinating visual performances and dramatic creations orchestrated in city centers, natural surroundings and historical sites, and their show for the Festival opening viewed by thousands of people with great interest. The one-hour "Concert for Elements" performed on the Seyhan River featured Studio Festi dancers defying gravity atop huge planets and model ships rising to the sky. As part of a broader construction project that began in 1956, Canyon Village Lodge functioned as the primary visitor's center for Yellowstone National Park for decades. The 2016 renovation of the Lodge, in conjunction with the replacement of over four hundred guest rooms, is being executed in coordination with the National Park Service and Xanterra Parks and Resorts. The forest practices conservation of resources, in some areas allowing for production of raw materials, such as lumber for construction purposes and wood pulp for paper products, alongside recreational uses, while in other areas only recreation is permitted. Additionally, mineral extraction through mining and oil and natural gas exploration and recovery are also conducted, though in Sawtooth National Forest this has become less common due to a consensus to protect the natural surroundings. Leases offered to ranchers to allow them to graze cattle and sheep on the forest are common.

The zoo was built in 1959-1961, with labour contributed by high school and university students, as well as other labourers of various types through the socialist voluntary labour scheme. The Firewise Communities Program focuses on reducing the loss of life and property, in terms of wildfires, by providing resources to allow communities to build responsibly in natural surroundings and assist one another in preparing for as well as recovering from wildfire. Communities enrolled in the Firewise Communities Program are bound to mitigation guidelines, which require firewise communities to develop and implement action plans to make properties safer from wildfire. Aaron Gifford, postmaster of North Bergen, built the house around 1870 as the homestead for what was then a hundred-acre (40 ha) farm. From grades 3–8, all students study a string or woodwind instrument and play together in a school ensemble or orchestra. The dramatic arts animate the curriculum with all elementary students participating in a class play yearly. WSL expands its classrooms into the natural surroundings with a gardening program, farm and field trips, nature observation and walks on conservation land, and through its seasonal, community festivals. Athletics and movement are an important part of every student's day through eighth grade. Sustained by a vibrant community of educators and supported by engaged parents, the school’s educational philosophy and culture instills in students respect for themselves, for each other, and for the living world around them.

The Nagare (pronounced “nah-gah-reh”) is a concept car that was introduced by Mazda at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Nagare is considered to be an exercise in natural and organic car design to explore the future of Mazda automobiles. Its name “Nagare” translates into English as “flow” and the designers specifically studied motion and the effect it has on natural surroundings when creating this vehicle. It was designed by Laurens van den Acker, Mazda’s global design director at the time (since replaced by Ikuo Maeda), and his advanced design studio team in Irvine, California. As head of the international Nagare design team, Laurens’ main task from Mazda was to design first and engineering later.

Bird of Paradise, directed by King Vidor in 1932, featured a nude swimming scene with Dolores del Río, and Harry Lachman's Dante's Inferno featured many naked men and women suffering in hell. The early Tarzan films with Johnny Weissmuller featured at least partial nudity justified by the natural surroundings in which the characters lived; in Tarzan and His Mate in 1934, Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan, doubled by Olympic swimmer Josephine McKim) swims in the nude. Under the pretense of being an educational ethnographic film, producers could justify showing half-clad natives in jungle epics and South-Sea-island documentaries. This was often done by editing in stock footage or fabricating new scenes with ethnic-looking stand-ins.

Although the character was originally voiced by Oz, Henson wanted a female voice, and subsequently selected Billie Whitelaw. The character Fizzgig was invented by Oz, who wanted a character who served the same function as the Muppet poodle Foo-Foo, feeling that, like Miss Piggy, the character Kira needed an outlet for her caring, nurturing side. The character's design was meant to convey the idea of a "boyfriend-repellant", to contrast the popular idea that it is easier to form a bond with a member of the opposite sex with the assistance of a cute dog. The Podlings were envisioned as people in complete harmony with their natural surroundings, thus Froud based their design on that of potatoes.

The first house in the future district was built during this period, although not by either of its later eponyms. In 1854, I.F. Wheeler built the house on the west side of Palisade Avenue, overlooking the river. It is likely that he was inspired by the work of Andrew Jackson Downing, an architect based upriver in Newburgh who had, until his death two years earlier, advocated for houses more harmonious with their natural surroundings than those built in the classically-inspired Federal or Greek Revival modes, the architectural styles that had up to then been prevalent in 19th-century America. Two designs in The Architecture of Country Houses, Downing's 1850 pattern book, strongly suggest the house Wheeler built.

Nieuwenhuys' New Babylon was based on the idea that architecture itself would allow and instigate a transformation of daily reality. In 1944, Mandelman and her husband visited the artist John Sloan in Santa Fe and traveled up to Taos, which so appealed to them that they impulsively decided to settle there. By the time Mandelman and Ribak arrived, the Taos art colony was already a well- established community of mainly representational artists. Aside from Thomas Benrimo and part-time resident Emil Bisttram there were few local artists working in a Modernist vein, and no local galleries showing Modernist art. Taos offered artists the proximity to Native American culture at Taos Pueblo, spectacular natural surroundings, a low cost of living, and a geographic location that was at the crossroads between the East and West Coasts, and a convenient stopover on the route to and from Mexico.

Among many other things he made clear that animals in the natural habitat do not need huge spaces, when all their needs can be satisfied within close range, that, in fact, animals do not move about for pleasure but to satisfy their needs. Zoo biology therefore implies that the life of animals in their natural surroundings must be studied in order to provide them with appropriate keeping conditions in human care. Fischer was also inventive in putting together his own telephoto lenses. After making all the calculations, he would order the necessary lens elements from a local optician and encase them in varnished home-made papier-mâché tubes, providing equipment of a type which at the time could not be obtained commercially. While Fischer showed great interest in photographing buildings and items of physical interest in the town of Luxembourg and its surroundings, he was also adept at photographing local men, women and children in their natural surroundings, often at their place of work. His shots often convey an unusual liveliness as he managed to catch his subjects in the course of their normal activities, sometimes amusingly portraying their leisure moments.

Additionally, he expresses his deep and abiding respect for all forms of life in his philosophy, but describes unflinchingly his contempt for the cattle he herds in the canyons, and in another scene he remorselessly stones a rabbit, angry about rabbits' overabundance in the desert. However, Abbey deliberately highlights many of the paradoxes and comments on them in his final chapter, particularly in regard to his conception of the desert landscape itself. He introduces the desert as "the flaming globe, blazing on the pinnacles and minarets and balanced rocks" and describes his initial reaction to his newfound environment and its challenges. For Abbey, the desert is a symbol of strength, and he is "comforted by [the] solidity and resistance" of his natural surroundings.

Unlike his younger rival, Staffeldt did, however, demonstrate a deeper understanding of Romanticist philosophy and a strong ability to turn the idea of a fundamental split between ideas and phenomena into what is, according to Brandes, poetry of "imperishable beauty". Staffeldt's German origins were noted in the nationalist atmosphere in the middle of the 19th century but as Brandes noted: "we Danes should not blame Staffeldt for preferring our language to his own". Staffeldt is a philosophical poet but the poems in his second collection, Nye Digte (1808, literally: New Poems) are also full of observations of the natural surroundings. The book did, however, not receive much attention and Staffeldt gave up poetry to work as a prefect in the duchies.

The Practice had offices in London and Scotland and was as well known for town planning work as for architecture. In 1989, the Practice merged with the then largest architectural PLC in the country, D. Y. Davis, a company that collapsed during the recession of the nineties. J.L. Womersley began to present with symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease in 1971 and died in Glasgow on 28 October 1990.

The limits were decided based on statistics gathered over a ten year period from 200414 when an average of 40 vehicles per day entered on the east side of the White Rim Road and an average of 26 vehicles per day entered on the west side. The limits are intended to provide a better wilderness experience for all visitors, and to minimize impacts on the natural surroundings. , no fees are required for day-use of the White Rim Road, though the park entrance fee still applies to all visitors in all park areas. No permit is required for traveling Shafer Trail or Potash Road, which are the only two roads that connect to the White Rim Road on its east side.

The Jacob Sloat House, or Harmony Hall as Sloat called it, exhibits a combination of features from the Greek Revival style, then declining in importance for houses, and newer trends like the Picturesque and Italianate styles. The former is more noticeable on the outside; the latter on the inside. Like a Greek Revival home, Sloat's was built on high ground that overlooked his lands and the source of his wealth, his mills and the river. The lawn and plantings around it, in turn, reflect the contemporary theories of Andrew Jackson Downing, who disliked Greek Revival houses as wasteful and false, advocating instead cottages that looked like comfortable places to live, in harmony with their natural surroundings rather than attempting to dominate them.

Indian Roller on Sandalwood by Zain ud-Din, now in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art The Impey Album was a collection of paintings commissioned by Elijah Impey (1732–1809) and his wife Mary, née Reade (1749–1818), of the animals in their menagerie in Calcutta (now Kolkata), India, where Elijah was chief justice of the Supreme Court. Between 1777 and 1782, the Impeys hired local artists to paint the various birds, animals and native plants, life-sized where possible, and their natural surroundings. The collection, often known as the Impey Album, is an important example of Company style painting. The three artists who are known were Sheikh Zain ud-Din,Also known as Sheikh Zain al-Din Bhawani Das, and Ram Das.

All the Krivaja tributaries and especially its headwaters are important spawning grounds for both Danube Taimen and its prey, Common nase (Chondrostoma nasus) and Grayling (Thymallus thymallus). The Kaljina, its parent the Bioštica, and the Stupčanica are the main source of the Krivaja waters, and all three are unspoiled in sense of water quality, their hydromorphology, natural surroundings and river biodiversity. The rich pool of indigenous salmonids such as Danube brown trout (Salo truta fario, Danube lineage), spawning grounds for huchen and nase, can only be maintained through statutory protection, and preservation of the Krivaja basin streams and rivers uninterrupted flow from construction of dams. However plans for hydropower development exist, and represent a real risk for unspoiled natural environment of the region.

Henry David Thoreau Henry David Thoreau was an important early influence in individualist anarchist thought in the United States and Europe. Thoreau was an American author, poet, naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, historian, philosopher and leading transcendentalist. He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings; and his essay, Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state. His thought is an early influence on green anarchism, but with an emphasis on the individual experience of the natural world influencing later naturist currents, simple living as a rejection of a materialist lifestyle and self- sufficiency were Thoreau's goals and the whole project was inspired by transcendentalist philosophy.

Many Swedes also came to the Pacific Northwest during the turn of the twentieth century, along with Norwegians and Finns, settling in Washington and Oregon. According to research by the Oregon Historical Society, Swedish immigrants "felt a kinship with the natural surroundings and economic opportunities in the Pacific Northwest," and the region experienced a significant influx of Swedish and Scandinavian immigrants between 1890 and 1910. Notable influence can be felt in the neighborhood of Ballard in Seattle, Washington, and by the Swedish Medical Center, a major hospital also in Seattle. In Oregon, Swedish immigrant populations were concentrated in the rural areas east of Portland, and a significant Swedish community was also established in the coastal city of Astoria along with Finnish and Norwegian settlers who worked in the timber and fishing industries.

Wasserbillig is home to the large Wasserbillig Aquarium with tanks of up to exhibiting fish from around the world in natural surroundings. Despite its small population, Wasserbillig is home to ExxonMobil's largest petrol station, which serves the A1 motorway, leading into Germany. This is due to the considerably lower fuel taxes in Luxembourg than in Germany, making it highly advantageous not only for motorists and truckers to fill their tanks before crossing the border into Germany but also for residents of the surrounding areas in Germany, notably the nearby city of Trier, to cross the border to purchase fuel in Luxembourg. The service area is similarly a large outlet for tobacco (which like fuel also attracts considerable cross-border custom from the surrounding areas of Germany due to the difference in taxes), coffee and chocolate.

The iconic glass structure on the roof, Your Rainbow Panorama, was designed by Olafur Eliasson and features a promenade offering a colourful panorama of the city. The Moesgård Museum specialises in archaeology and ethnography in collaboration with Aarhus University with exhibits on Denmark's prehistory, including weapon sacrifices from Illerup Ådal and the Grauballe Man. Kvindemuseet, the Women's Museum, from 1984 contains collections of the lives and works of women in Danish cultural history. The Occupation Museum (Besættelsesmuseum) presents exhibits illustrating the German occupation of the city during the Second World War; the University Park on the campus of Aarhus University includes the Natural History Museum with 5,000 species of animals, many in their natural surroundings; and the Steno Museum is a museum of the history of science and medicine with a planetarium.

Since 2016 Reshef has been exhibiting different forms of painting-installation, in which unstretched scrolls of paintings create a three-dimensional, overlapping experience for the viewing audience. Her most recent painting-installation is “Arcadia”,that debuted as a solo exhibition at the Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, New York, in October 2019. Alluding to Nicholas Poussin’s painting “Et In Arcadia Ego”, the installation deals with the tension between the picturesque landscape and environment of the museum’s natural surroundings, and with the potential of disturbance and the suspended aggression that lies underneath the surface, both in American and in Israeli societies. Reshef’s first Installation “Control l Release” was exhibited in ArtSpace TLV gallery, presenting about 44 meters (142 feet) of painting scrolls, hung from the ceiling to the floor, and surrounding the gallery.

Hughes' paintings are best known for their strong and appealing images of the landscape and seascape of British Columbia. Jack Shadbolt described Hughes as "the most engaging intuitive painter of the BC landscape since Emily Carr." His distinctive style of painting is marked by the use of flattened space, skewed perspective, and simplified shapes. The paintings combine compelling clarity with a sense of the unknown and an appreciation for natural surroundings. Hughes was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1968. Streli focused on one-family homes, with respect for the owners' wishes and the natural surroundings. Inspired by models such as Clemens Holzmeister, , , and Frank Lloyd Wright, he found his own style. He departed from his love of nature and of traditional building in rural landscape, with wood as a preferred material, but changed toward urban environments. He renovated the interior of the old parish church in Hötting in 1989, and built a new parish hall there in 1994. Extension of the University Hospital Innsbruck, completed 2008 The joint extension of the University Hospital in Innsbruck, created by adding a technical and a clinical floor for gynecology and neurology on top, built from 2006 to 2008, was nominated for the award of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in 2009.

The Tibesti art is unique in the Sahara because of the absence of inscriptions, the relative lack of chariots, and the low representation of camels and horses until comparatively recently. The art has remained important to the Toubou; around 1200 AD, a man named Yerbou engraved a palm leaf into rock, symbolizing his love for a married woman. The land art of Jean Vérame in the Tibesti In 1989, French painter and sculptor Jean Vérame used the natural surroundings of the Ehi Kourné, a few kilometers south of Bardaï, to create multidimensional land art works by painting rocks. The project was supported by the Chadian president and the United Nations Development Programme, as well as private corporations such as the French oil company Total S.A. Over time, the Klein Blue paint turned patina white and red, and today is pinkish in color.

By the 8th century CE Chenla had divided into “Land Chenla” located in Laos, and “Water Chenla” founded by Mahendravarman near Sambor Prei Kuk in Cambodia. Land Chenla was known to the Chinese as “Po Lou” or “Wen Dan” and dispatched a trade mission to the Tang Dynasty court in 717 CE. Water Chenla, would come under repeated attack from Champa, the Medang sea kingdoms in Indonesia based in Java, and finally pirates.

The Glass House was also designed with economy in mind, as a model for accessible housing, employing a modular design, and standard, but chemical free, low cost off-the-shelf industrial products and second hand building materials. Like other residential buildings designed by architects of the "Sydney School", Lucas' Glass House makes use of natural, rough, self-finished materials. The house's surfaces are not painted or clad, and the structure of the building is readily discerned with the frame only minimally closed-in using glass on many of the surfaces. As Lucas noted in the introduction to "Architecture into Millennium III", he selected materials that can be utilized to satisfy needs with as little effort as possible, self-finished, maintenance free, that improve with wear, that merge with natural surroundings and that provide an appropriate background for living.

Second Wind was shot on 35mm (aspect ratio: 1.85:1) over a period of six weeks in late 1975. Reginald H. Morris was pleased that there were no sets: "it was all shot in natural surroundings, in people's houses, in the stock exchange, in bars and so on", in Toronto, Gravenhurst, and London, Ontario. Morris preferred shooting reality over filming on a set: > You can imagine having a set, and outside the window you have to burn it > out, so it's not readable, or put up some phony backing or something; > whereas if you're in a real situation you can have people outside the > window, even conversing through the window; you can see traffic going by — > things you can't do in film studios. Another aspect of the project that pleased him was shooting with Canon high speed lenses.

This led to larger numbers of air arrivals, and falling ticket prices, opening Bermuda to short-term holidays by the average American family. These new visitors were less interested in attending balls, hunting aristocratic husbands, or Bermuda's other traditional genteel and wintry leisure activities. New hotels had sprung up in Bermuda even before the war, such as the Castle Harbour Hotel and the Elbow Beach Hotel, which offered visitors direct access to the beach in more natural surroundings, and better catered to sun-seekers and hedonists. More beach resorts were built after the war, including the Carlton Beach resort, the Grotto Bay Hotel, and the Princess' own sister hotel, the Southampton Princess (currently dubbed the Fairmont Southampton), built in 1972 on a 100-acre parcel near to the most popular public beaches, with its own private beach club and gold course.

Just a cluster of old buildings, Búðir is the home of popular country inn and restaurant Hotel Búðir and a very old small church. The original old house of the restaurant and Hótel Búðir burned down on 21 February 2001, and had to be rebuilt completely, so as to resemble the original old inn house and to blend into the existing scenery of old buildings and natural surroundings. It is believed that commercial ships and fishing vessels have been making their landing at Búðir all the way back to when Iceland's first inhabitants made their way there across the ocean, and commercial activity started there very early in recorded history. Originally the main function of Búðir was that to act as a commercial and trade hub for Snæfellsnes and the surrounding west coast region, during an extended period of Danish trade monopoly.

New Barkerville, British Columbia is affectionately known as a suburb of Barkerville, B.C. New Barkerville was formed in 1958, when the last remaining Barkerville residents were offered the choice of selling their homes to the Government of British Columbia, which had taken over the Barkerville townsite as a museum, or to be relocated. Most residents chose to have their houses relocated to the peak of the Reduction Road Hill, in the forest from Barkerville. Today, New Barkerville consists of roughly eight updated pioneer- style family houses and outbuildings, with a few newly built homes interspersed between them. Amenities are basic - Hydro electricity, spring-fed water supply, telephone and satellite high speed internet are recent innovations - but the solitude and natural surroundings appeal to the year- round residents, who participate fully in the life of nearby Wells, away.

As at 13 July 2006, the Woodlands (formerly known as Inglewood) is of State heritage significance for its historic association with the acclaimed Australian children's author Ethel Turner (1870 - 1958) whose most famous literary work Seven Little Australians was written during Turner's occupancy of the property. Ethel Turner lived at Woodlands with her family from September 1891 to December 1894. During this period she wrote three books: her first and most famous children's novel 'Seven Little Australians'; its sequel The Family at Misrule; and The Story of a Baby. Seven Little Australians and its sequel were strongly influenced by the social and domestic environment of Woodlands and its natural surroundings creating a provocative portrayal of children and Australian identity in the late 19th century. Seven Little Australians has been in print for well over 100 years.

As construction proceeded, Jaffe was replaced by German recording engineer Heinrich Heilholz, whom Szell preferred. The fundraising campaign reached its goal of $6.6 million, and ground was broken on July 2, 1967. The Blossom Festival’s inaugural concert, featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony conducted by Szell, took place on July 19, 1968, with a live television broadcast on WKYC-TV3. The following year the Orchestra hosted its first Fourth of July concert at Blossom — led by Meredith Wilson, who composed The Music Man. In 2003, Blossom underwent a $17 million renovation intended to enhance a number of areas across the venue, including the sound system, stage, guest services, parking lots, and landscaping. In a transaction designed to give the Orchestra a financial boost and protect Blossom’s natural surroundings, the Musical Arts Association sold 580 acres of the site’s undeveloped land to the National Park Service in 2011.

Occasionally people from Gibsons, British Columbia or those who have cabins on Keats Island will park a barge or tie together a series of boats and have a private flotilla party, although this is rare and usually only occurs on peak long weekends. Due to the natural surroundings, lack of vehicle access, and dedication or investment in a marine vehicle to get to the park, the park is lovingly referred to by those who frequent it regularly as "the best campground in BC". Those from Vancouver, British Columbia who frequent the park tend to go back every year on the same weekends at the same time, and tend to not advertise to their fellow city dwellers about the park in order to keep it private and from it getting too busy. From September 24 to May 15, the park does not charge camping fees, but has limited services available.

From 1997 to 2007, Heaton was based in Dorset, as Director of the Holton Lee Trust which offers a mix of environmental, artistic and spiritual activities, with short stay residential facilities for Disabled people, in an SSSI comprising 350 acres of woodland, reed bed and heath land landscape adjacent to Poole Harbour. Heaton developed a 10-year strategic plan for the organisation: a contemporary arts and education programme based on a series of accessible buildings including a gallery and artists’ studios, which would enable a new programme of artistic work, a growth in residential capacity and a focus for disability arts. All the buildings would use local materials blending in with Holton Lee's natural surroundings. The first of these, Faith House gallery, designed by Tony Fretton was hailed by Jonathan Glancey in the Guardian as ‘one of the most beautiful new buildings in Britain’.

The Garden of the Righteous Among the Nations () is part of the much larger Yad Vashem complex located on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem. Along with some two dozen different structures within the Yad Vashem memorial – which is the second most-visited destination in the country after the Western Wall – the Garden of the Righteous is meant to honor those non-Jews who during the Holocaust risked their lives to save Jews from extermination by the Nazis. The Garden was designed by landscape architects Lipa Yahalom and Dan Zur after a decision to construct a memorial where the names of the Righteous Among the Nations would be perpetuated. A most serene site of impressive simplicity, integrated into the natural surroundings of the forested hill, the Garden consists of a series of walls creating open rooms, where the names of all the Righteous who had no trees planted in their honor are engraved in alphabetical order on the walls according to their countries of origin.

As of 2019, Canopy, a massive campus in Winter Park with a 35,690-square-foot library and a 13,456-square-foot events center is set to open in May 2021. Set within the 23-acre block that includes Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, the Winter Park Canopy is proposed to offer views of the water’s edge and natural surroundings, 230-plus parking spaces, and an outdoor amphitheatre. As of 2019, community efforts continued to fund additional amenities, including a porte cochère, rooftop venue, indoor raked auditorium and additional project enhancement opportunities. The library's website describes the new offerings that are proposed to be available to patrons in the new location, including a library commons area, an education and performance space, three collaborative and working rooms, a business center, social spaces near age-appropriate book collections, a computer lab, private study rooms, a "Genius Lab" with 3D printers, a studio with video and audio production, and a larger story room adjacent.

Pater's much-admired translation of Apuleius's 'Cupid and Psyche' is one of the interpolated texts in Marius the Epicurean Marius, a sensitive only child of a patrician family, growing up near Luna in rural Etruria, is impressed by the traditions and rituals of the ancestral religion of the Lares, by his natural surroundings, and by a boyhood visit to a sanctuary of Aesculapius. His childhood ends with the death of his mother (he had early lost his father) and with his departure for boarding school in Pisae. As a youth he is befriended by and falls under the influence of a brilliant, hedonistic older boy, Flavianus, who awakens in him a love of literature (the two read with delight the story of Cupid and Psyche in Apuleius, and Pater in due course makes Flavian, who is "an ardent student of words, of the literary art",Pater, Marius the Epicurean, Chapter VI the author of the Pervigilium Veneris).

Like fire safe councils, the Firewise USA program is designed to reach beyond the fire service by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, and others in the effort to protect people, property, and natural resources from the risk of wildland fire - before a fire starts. Fire safe councils and Firewise USA both emphasize community responsibility for planning in the design of a safe community as well as effective emergency response, and individual responsibility for safer home construction and design, landscaping, and maintenance. The Firewise USA program is intended to serve as a resource for agencies, tribes, organizations, fire departments, and communities across the U.S. who are working toward a common goal: reduce loss of lives, property, and resources to wildland fire by building and maintaining communities in a way that is compatible with our natural surroundings. It differs from fire safe councils in that the Firewise program is nationwide while fire safe councils are mainly in California.

Interior of the altar of the Aghia Kyriaki stone Church at Angelokastro featuring the smaller of the two Early-Christian closure slabs as its altar stone Angelokastro is considered one of the most imposing architectural remains in the Ionian Islands along with four other fortifications of Corfu such as Gardiki Castle, the Kassiopi Castle built by the Angevins and the two Venetian Fortresses of Corfu City, the Citadel and the New Fort. The castle's west, northwest and south sides are protected by the terrain that slopes precipitously. Its foundation may have been Byzantine but, given its size, the incorporation of its extraordinary natural surroundings into the design of the fortifications is not typically Byzantine and follows the tradition of small but practically impregnable fortresses which incorporate outstanding natural elements into their design. In contrast to the purely Byzantine style of Gardiki Castle which was also constructed in a single form, Angelokastro's architectural style may not have been purely Byzantine and could have been influenced by Frankish or South Italian architectural elements, although the details of such influence are not discernible today due to its current state of ruin.

The recognition of the Whanganui River as a legal entity in New Zealand (Te Awa Tupua) encompassed a vivid sense of cultural “inalienable connection” to the local iwi and hapu of the river. Māori culture considers natural features such as the Whanganui River as ancestors and iwi hold deep connections with them as living entities. This inalienable connection of indigenous culture to their natural surroundings is apparent in other parts of the world such as Colombia where a similar environmental personhood declaration was made for the Atrato River basin. The lead negotiator for the Whanganui iwi, Gerrard Albert, said “we consider the river an ancestor and always have…treating the river as a living entity is the correct way to approach it, as an indivisible whole, instead of the traditional model for the last 100 years of treating it from a perspective of ownership and management.” James D K Morris and Jacinta Ruru suggest that giving “legal personality to rivers is one way in which the law could develop to provide a lasting commitment to reconciling with Maori.” This was the longest-running legal dispute in New Zealand.
