The pilot's science-fiction plot elements were appreciated by New York magazine, which wrote favorably about the "millenarianism" of the show, including Brisco's use of a rocket to travel on railroad tracks. While Rod Dreher of the Washington Times liked the "nifty" Orb subplot, some critics responded negatively to the Orb. The Washington Posts Shales called the Orb "hokey supernatural bunk".

"My Best Theory" was reminiscent of "Gone Away" by the Offspring, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Adkins said it talks about "finding your individuality in a world where extremes are more and more presented as your only option." The Foo Fighters-esque "Evidence" is followed by "Higher Devotion", a dark disco track with industrial guitar sounds, synthesizers played by Doug Borrmann, and Adkins channeling Prince. The mid-tempo number "Movielike" is followed by the coming-of-age "Coffee and Cigarettes", which features references to Otis Redding and Grateful Dead.
