Castling is a move in the game of chess involving a player's king and either of the player's original rooks. It is the only move in chess in which a player moves two pieces in the same move, and it is the only move aside from the knight's move where a piece can be said to "jump over" another. Castling consists of moving the king two squares towards a rook on the player's first , then moving the rook to the square over which the king crossed. Castling may only be done if the king has never moved, the rook involved has never moved, the squares between the king and the rook involved are unoccupied, the king is not in check, and the king does not cross over or end on a square attacked by an enemy piece.

Their relationship disintegrated and eventually Allison won the power struggle – Mercer was sidelined and quit to take over at Coventry City in the summer of 1972.

Theming includes animatronics such as a wizard and goblins, as well as rotating hallways and 3D paintings, for which 3-D glasses could be worn until the 2017 season where these were removed. The attraction would begin inside the main hall of the building where you were greeted by a preshow involving a wizard and the troublesome goblins of the Hall before the room transformed before your eyes into a room full of goblins and eyes from every corner - the bookcase would move aside leading you through a library corridor and into a trommel tunnel. After the tunnel you reach a generator room where goblins are causing all kinds of chaos in the form of animatronic statues and peppers ghost style projections.

The creeping attack was an anti submarine measure developed during the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. It was first used by 36 Escort Group of the Royal Navy after being developed by the Group's commanding officer, Captain "Johnnie" Walker. The problem addressed by Walker in the tactics then in use was that ASDIC, the means to search for and find a submerged submarine, searched forward, while the main weapon to attack it, the depth charge, was released or projected from the stern. This led to a loss of contact in final run up to target, giving the U-boat a chance to move at the last minute and evade damage. The more skilled or experienced U-boat commanders became adept at predicting the points at which the escort sped up to attack, and when they lost ASDIC contact, and were able to move aside while the charges sank to their depth.

The design of submarines, to resist the enormous pressure of the water at depth, made them also resistant to the effects of underwater explosions; a depth charge of the Second World War would need to explode within 26 feet of its target to have any serious effect. The barrage, referred to by the group as “the bosses special” involved three ships moving in line abreast over the target area; at the word of command each ship would lay a series of depth charge patterns, one after the other, in a carpet.
