The modern helmet traces its roots back to the leather helmets used by football players in the early 1900s to protect themselves from head injuries. Helmets later evolved to be made of hard plastic, and a facemask was added to protect players from sustaining facial injuries. Many players also wear mouthguards to prevent injuries to their teeth and tongues; at some levels, such as the NCAA, the use of a mouthguard is mandatory.

Upon the death of his father, Watts abandoned his plans for a NRL return and signed with the Tugun Seahawks of the Gold Coast Rugby League. Watts was playing for Tugun in 2013, when he was accused of biting an opposition player on the penis during a melee in a match. Watts was given an eight-week suspension, but denied the charge. Almost ready to quit wrestling Pozos friend José Mercado, who wrestles as Pentagón Black, convinced him to apply for a job with Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). In the AAA offices he met AAA owner Antonio Peña, who remembered Pozos from the time Peña worked for CMLL. Peña gave Pozos a job with AAA and together they came up with a new character to replace "Ultimatum". Pozos was inspired by the Hanibal Lecter character from the movie Silence of the Lambs and had turned an ice hockey Goaltender's mask into a mouthguard like the one Lecter wore in the movie.

Helmets must be analogous to the rest of the armour, must cover the face and must be closed with a strap to prevent removal during combat. Fighters may wear a supplementary third layer of protective equipment beneath their gambeson, provided it is not visible and does not replace any armour above it, such as a Protective Cup or mouthguard.

In the Fury's round 3 match versus Melbourne Victory, Akoto was red carded after an incident involving Kevin Muscat, where the Victory defender would not let Akoto pick up his mouthguard and resulted in Akoto pushing Muscat to the ground.

Men's field lacrosse protective equipment contains a pair of gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, helmet, mouthguard, and cleats. Pads differ in size and protection from player to player based on position, ability, comfort and preference. For example, many attack players wear larger and more protective elbow pads to protect themselves from checks thrown at them while defenders typically wear smaller and less protective pads due to their smaller possibility of being checked and goalies usually wear no elbow pads due to the very limited opportunities of being checked. A goalkeeper must also wear a large protective chest pad to cover their stomach and chest and a plastic neck guard that connects to the chin of their helmet to protect them from shots hitting their windpipe.

They have no reported side effects other than possible skin irritation from the adhesive. Studies indicate that they are useful in increasing nasal cavity volume in the front three centimeters of the human nose, and for that purpose could be an alternative to decongestive nose sprays, but nasal strips are not particularly helpful for congestion in the posterior nasal apertures. Barch was drafted 106th overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals. Barch played his junior hockey with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. In his three years with London, Barch had 123 points in 187 games while tallying 206 penalty minutes. Unsigned by the Capitals, Barch signed as a free agent with the Dallas Stars on July 18, 2006. Barch made his NHL debut in the 2006–07 season on January 15, 2007 against the Los Angeles Kings after being called up due to injuries. He remained with the Stars for the remainder of the season, played in 26 of 37 games and scored 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points. Known as a hard-hitter, Barch had 107 penalty minutes, which included 13 fighting majors. On January 29, 2009, Barch had eight teeth shattered from a high stick by defenceman Chris Chelios, despite wearing a protective mouthguard, in a game with the Detroit Red Wings. On December 7, 2011, the Dallas Stars traded Barch and a 6th-round pick in the 2012 draft, to the Florida Panthers in exchange for the minor league forward Jake Hauswirth and a 5th-round pick in 2012.
