While predicting the 22-column screen was "too small to support any but the most rudimentary business applications" the magazine observed that "at a price of $299, that is hardly the point", stating that "the VIC will provide very stiff competition to the TRS-80 Color Computer" and "is a much more valuable computer literacy tool than" other products like the TRS-80 Pocket Computer. Pole-Evans was born in Llanmaes near Cardiff, the son of an Anglican clergyman, Daniel Evans and Caroline Jane Pole. He was educated at the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire, receiving a BSc in 1903 and going on to Cambridge where he studied mycology and plant pathology under Harry Marshall Ward FRS, obtaining an MA in 1905. Pole-Evans was appointed as mycologist and plant pathologist, and joined Burtt Davy in the newly established Transvaal Department of Agriculture. Although having the most rudimentary laboratory facilities, Pole-Evans implemented a research program and started producing a steady flow of published work. He assumed charge of the Division of Mycology and Plant Pathology in 1912, which later became part of the Division of Botany and Plant Pathology.

By ensuring natural defects, such as knots in the wooden posts are not adjacent to each other, poor quality timber can be utilised which makes for a highly economical way of using a fast- growing, underused resource, of which the UK and Scotland in particular, has an abundance. Brettstapel is manufactured to three quality grades depending on how visible the final product will be: Industrial, Standard and Exposed. With this in mind, the most rudimentary solution is to use unfinished timber where the panels are to be covered.

"Comme è ddoce 'o mare" was chosen internally by broadcaster RAI as the Italian entry, and is notable for being sung in the Neapolitan language rather than standard Italian. The 1991 contest is notorious for RAI's chaotic organisation, both before and during the contest, which prompted a storm of criticism from other participating broadcasters and led to the Rome contest being considered the most amateurish and shambolically organised in Eurovision history. Prominent among the complaints was RAI's decision to appoint Cutugno and Italy's previous Eurovision winner Gigliola Cinquetti as presenters, since neither appeared to have more than the most rudimentary knowledge of either English or French (the two official languages of the European Broadcasting Union).
