In cultivation they do not appear above ground until late spring or even early summer; thus if planted deeply enough, up to , they escape frost damage in regions where subzero temperatures occur. St. John River Campaign: The Construction of Fort Frederick (1758) After the Conquest of Acadia (1710), Acadians migrated from peninsula Nova Scotia to the French-occupied Saint John River. These Acadians were seen as the most resistant to British rule in the region. During the French and Indian War, many more Acadians sought refuge from mainland Nova Scotia to the Saint John River. The fort was the only place east of the Cascades in that immediate region where there were any white people . Of all the oaks, the Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica) is the most resistant to drought and the continental-style climate. HEAT had posed a serious threat to armoured vehicles since its introduction in World War II. The most resistant of Boers wanted to continue the fight and were known as "Bittereinders" (or irreconcilables) and at the end of the war a number of Boer fighters such as Deneys Reitz chose exile rather than sign an oath, such as the following, to pledge allegiance to Britain: Over the following decade, many returned to South Africa and never signed the pledge. Some, like Reitz, eventually reconciled themselves to the new status quo, but others could not.
