Kenneth Kilsyth, a young clerk in a London counting house, and a most reluctant employee, wins £1000 in a football pool (nearly £200,000 at present-day prices calculated as average earnings, or over £43,000 calculated as retail price index). Inviting his sole friend and fellow clerk, Gerald Hayes, to join him, he embarks on a journey of adventure. Some time later, they find themselves the sole passengers on a merchant ship, the S.S. Mumtaz, steaming from Vancouver to Honolulu, but all the officers and most of the sailors are quickly wiped out by a mysterious disease, leaving the two passengers the only people alive. Bridges, the quartermaster of the crew, survives long enough to help dispose of the bodies overboard and shows the lads how to rig a sail on to the wallowing freighter.

As 33.7% of the revenue of the Congo came from the sale of the copper mined in Katanga, ownership of the company was an important consideration for the leaders the Congolese Independence movement while the Belgian government was most reluctant to give up its share in the UMHK, and did not finally do so until 1967. In January 1959, it was announced that Belgium would grant independence to the Congo in June 1960. Starting in March 1960, the UMHK began to financially support CONAKAT and bribed the party leader, Moïse Tshombe, into advocating policies that were favorable to the company. When the Belgian Congo received independence from Belgium on 30 June 1960, it was already wracked by ethnic factionalism and political tension.

Although Lord Sainsbury has retired, he is Life President of the retailer and continues to take an active interest in the business; these days he tours stores with present chief executive Mike Coupe as well as being the family member always attending J Sainsbury plc Annual General Meetings. He also serves as a Joint President of the Sainsbury's Veteran Association along with former Sainsbury's CEO Dino Adriano. During the sell down of the family stake between 2005 and 2008 from 35% to 15%, it was Lord Sainsbury who was the last major family shareholder to reduce his stake, in his case from 4% to 3.89%, the 0.11% sold having belonged to a non-beneficial trust held by him.

A revised revival of The Great Divorce opened Off-Broadway on Theatre Row in December 2019 and has since begun a national tour under the direction of Broadway veteran Christa Scott-Reed. Other FPA productions include the original C.S. Lewis on Stage: The Most Reluctant Convert, written and performed by McLean and co-directed with Executive Producer Ken Denison of Aruba Productions in 2016; Martin Luther on Trial, co-written by McLean and playwright and drama professor Chris Cragin-Day, in December 2016; the first New York City revival of William Nicholson's Shadowlands in 2018; Robert Bolt's A Man for All Seasons in 2019; and the world premiere of Paradise Lost by Tom Dulack, a retelling of John Milton's poem of the same name, in January 2020. In addition to its New York season, FPA presented Imagine This! in 2018 and 2019, a series of staged readings of works under consideration for future production.

The decision of the Barons of the Exchequer that they were obliged to implement the decree of the English House infuriated the Irish House, which imprisoned the Barons for contempt. To resolve the matter the British Government passed the Declaratory Act 1719, removing the power of the Irish House of Lords to hear appeals. This Act became notorious in Ireland as the Sixth of George I, and quite unfairly the judges of Court of Exchequer bore the brunt of the blame for it: as one of the Barons, John Pocklington, remarked "a flame burst forth, and the country's last resentment was visited upon us." By the mid nineteenth century the Exchequer had overtaken the Court of King's Bench as the busiest common law court, and the death of Chief Baron Woulfe, in 1840, was widely blamed on his crushing workload (indeed Woulfe, who suffered from chronic ill health, had been warned that the job would kill him, and had been most reluctant to accept it).

During the Clone Wars, he served the Republic as an overseer of the war effort and advisor to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, as well as taking part in conflicts such as the Battles of Malastare and Felucia.

Parliament may restrict the rights to free speech, assembly and association on the grounds set out in the table below if it is "necessary or expedient in the interest" of them: Grounds on which Article 14(1) rights may be restricted if it is "necessary or expedient" to do so (SG is an abbreviation for Singapore) In Chee Siok Chin, the High Court interpreted the phrase necessary or expedient as conferring upon Parliament "an extremely wide discretionary power and remit that permits a multifarious and multifaceted approach towards achieving any of the purposes specified in Art 14(2) of the Constitution". The Court emphasized the fact that, unlike Article 19(3) of the Constitution of India which provides that the right to fetter the freedom of speech and assembly is subject to the touchstone of reasonableness, Singapore's Article 14(2) does not contain the word reasonable. However, despite the broad power that Article 19(3) accords to the Indian courts, they have been "most reluctant" to invalidate legislation purportedly infringing the rights to free speech or assembly. There exists a strong presumption of legislative constitutionality, as the Supreme Court of India has expressed a need for "judicial self-restraint and extreme caution" when determining whether legislation unreasonably restricts a constitutional right.
