Aftermath of the 1994 volcanic eruption in Rabaul In 1983 and 1984 the town was ready for evacuation when the volcanoes started to heat up. Nothing happened until 19 September 1994, when again Tavurvur and Vulcan erupted, destroying the airport and covering most of the town with heavy ashfall. There were only 19 hours of warning, but the city and most nearby villages were evacuated before the eruption. Five people were killed—one of them by lightning from the eruptive column.

Borghetto Santo Spirito is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Savona in the Italian region Liguria, located about southwest of Genoa and about southwest of Savona. Borghetto Santo Spirito borders the following municipalities: Boissano, Ceriale, Loano, and Toirano. Ugeblad for Skien, Skiens-Fjord og Omegn was started as a weekly newspaper on 1 January 1830, and omitted the "Skiens-Fjord" from its name already in July 1830. It was the project of printing press owner Peter Feilberg, who with "Ugebladet" had started the first newspaper in Skien. "Ugebladet" had no competing newspapers during its existence, the most nearby "rival" being Jarlsbergs og Laurvigs Amtstidende in Laurvig. Feilberg and "Ugebladet" was notably convicted of libel in 1837 and sentenced to pay 60 speciedaler; the complaint had been filed by County Governor Frederik Wilhelm Wedel Jarlsberg.

The city is served by 20 local bus lines, most of which are pendulum lines between two different areas via city centre. Bus transport in the Päijänne Tavastia region is organised by the regional transportation authority, known as Lahden seudun liikenne or LSL, and run by several private companies which have bid for the right to run their lines. LSL buses cover all urban areas at 10–20 minute intervals and most nearby municipalities at 30–60 minute intervals. Lahti is served by VR commuter rail, the Z train to Helsinki and the G train to Riihimäki run hourly.

He would have been forced by the new economic times to have used sharecroppers, that is workers, primarily former slaves, who would be paid for their services out of the crops that were raised. The Middle Fork continued producing large amounts of placer gold into the 1880s, more than 20 years after most nearby streams had been exhausted. Prospectors exploring the side canyons of the Middle Fork soon discovered that the auriferous (gold- bearing) gravels originated from strata about above the river. These auriferous gravels are actually ancient river beds, which over millions of years were eroded away resulting in the placer gold deposits of the modern river. Hydraulic mining and hard-rock mining operations soon spread along the Middle Fork canyon; Georgetown, established in 1849 on the divide south of the river, became the hub of this mining district.

In 1989, there was a split in the denomination over the interpretation of parts of the Westminster Confession concerning liberty of conscience and the extent to which Free Presbyterians should fellowship with evangelicals in other denominations. The congregation determined to join the newly formed Associated Presbyterian Churches, and has remained part of it to the present day. In 1854 the Londonderry Railway opened the Londonderry, Seaham and Sunderland Railway to link its network of colliery railways to the newly constructed South Dock in Sunderland due to the lack of capacity in Seaham Harbour. Though constructed primarily for mineral traffic, passengers were also carried between and Hendon Burn in Sunderland from 1855, where the LS&SR; opened an additional station to serve Ryhope on 2 July. The station was originally named Ryhope and was designed by Brewer, the Marquis of Londonderry's Estate Clerk of Works at the time which meant that the design of station and footbridge was very different to most nearby stations that were designed by the North Eastern Railway. From 1868 the LS&SR; began to use the Hendon terminus of Durham & Sunderland Railway until this was in turn replaced by Sunderland Central station in 1879.
