A zarih is built from fine materials by skilled craftsmen, from calligraphers, metal workers, jewelers, carpenters, and engineers. Zarihs can be the size of a small room and are commonly built by hand in a process that often takes several years. Not all zarihs are of the same quality; however, the most intricate zarihs found, are often in the shrines of Shia Imams and are seldom built, these zarihs take longer to construct and use more sophisticated materials and methods.

This collaboration has produced a series of "augmented instruments" called Hyperinstruments such as the HyperCello, an acoustic cello created in 1991 for Yo-Yo Ma. The Hyperbow itself has an older version called Hyperviolin, which was designed for Ani Kavafian. Jennifer Drysdale of Entertainment Tonight labelled the performance as "energetic" and "mind-blowing" with "some of the most intricate choreography of any pop boy band ever." Mary Wang of Vogue praised the "characteristically tight choreography" and "coordinating" on-stage fashion style of the band. Maura Johnston of Rolling Stone chose the performance as one of the best moments of the awards show writing, "BTS’ synchronized moves and the lovelorn lyrics of 'DNA' make them feel like a bit of a throwback to the TRL era, but their forward-thinking music, which borrows from Kpop's meticulously detailed sonics and hip-hop's spaced-out beats, places them ahead of the late-2010s’ pop pack." Melendez of Spin lauded the "complex choreography", "rapid fire footwork" and "an on-the-nose double helix formation" of the band.

However, there was a clear hierarchy in the final products such that the skill of artisans was able to stratify production such that the distribution of most intricate and uniquely crafted jadeite could still be restricted by the elite, perhaps even crafted as part of "sponsored production arrangements" by elites. At Mind Equals Blown, Jarrod Church rated the album an eight out of ten, stating how the inclusion of just a single ballad would have been beneficial says that "there is not a single bad track on the album, every song scoring a par at the very least", which in his estimation "is always a stellar accomplishment.

The Reredos in front of the church is an outstanding example of his woodworking skills. Made from over four hundred pieces of chestnut, oak, poplar, holly, cherry, beech, and pine, they were often carved during missionary trips to the Chapel of Rest in Happy Valley, North Carolina, and the Chapel of Peace in Witnel, North Carolina The architectural design is Gothic perpendicular from the 14th and 16th centuries. While Rev. Oertel carved other reredos and altar rails, the one in St. James is considered to be the most intricate and notable. The altar painting (1872) is layered oil on canvass with gold gilt, and depicts Jesus administering Holy Communion to male and female communicants. While at St. James, friends in New York donated the 100-year-old pump organ from Christ Episcopal Church (Tarrytown, New York). The organ, dating from about 1770, was the first instrument to enhance the service in Lenoir. Rev. Oertel rebuilt the damaged organ, making new pipes, and a new wind chest and bellows.
