He theorized that a loss of personal responsibility in crowds leads to an inclination to behave primitively and hedonistically by the entire group. This resulting mentality, according to Le Bon, belongs more to the collective than any individual, so that individual traits are submerged. The idea of a "group mind" is comparable to the shared autism theory, which holds that individuals within a group may develop shared beliefs that have no basis in reality ("delusions"). Already, Le Bon was tending toward the conception of deindividuation as a state brought on by a lowering of accountability, resulting from a degree of anonymity due to membership within a crowd, where attention is shifted from the self to the more stimulating, external qualities of the group’s action (which may be extreme).

In the December-January 1977 edition of White Dwarf (Issue #4), Lew Pulsipher liked the unique setting, and the well organized rules that "use a step by step format, so even a novice fantasy gamer shouldn't have much trouble absorbing the game slowly but surely." Due to the complexity of the game, Pulsipher recommended that gamers start by playing the prequel, White Bear and Red Moon first, "because it resembles conventional two-player games more than Nomad Gods does, and because the second edition [of White Bear and Red Moon] has corrected typos and ambiguous rules, a treatment, Nomad Gods would profit from." Pulsipher concluded by recommending the game: "You won't find more stimulating fantasy boardgames anywhere." He gave the game an overall rating of 9 out of 10.

This model could be adapted to include possible factors, like nutrition in early childhood, that may cause permanent effects. The Flynn effect is the increase in average intelligence test scores by about 0.3% annually, resulting in the average person today scoring 15 points higher in IQ compared to the generation 50 years ago. This effect can be explained by a generally more stimulating environment for all people.

What was still more stimulating was the whole-hearted and unquestioning reverence for learning broadcast through the academic circles and extending even to the outside public. I had a striking proof of this: as an illustration of national character, the anecdote is worth recording. Living in Berlin at some distance from the university, I used to go in every morning by the same early tram: and at last noting that I was a foreigner of regular habits, the affable and chatty tramway conductor used to point out to me the objects worthy of interest by the way (Sehenswürdigkeiten—a crisp Teutonic word).
