Next, Lampwick's head morphs into a half-donkey-half-human face as he lets out an extremely realistic bray (compared to the previous human-sounding one). Suddenly, the boys begin to grope awkwardly with their hands as they become hooves. Finally with one more screaming bray (this time completely animalistic), Lampwick becomes a complete donkey. It seems that the transformation is somehow timed perfectly to coincide with the end of the rollercoaster.

This is the first studio album with drumming provided by Nick Oshiro, and the second and last album that guitarist Tripp Eisen wrote and performed on. The album marks the return of former guitarist Koichi Fukuda, who helped with the programming, and according to Static-X's online forums, Fukuda completed additional guitar parts in three songs left unfinished by Eisen. The album continues the change in sound found on Shadow Zone but many of the songs featured on Start a War are heavier and feature a lot more screaming and aggressive lyrics. Songs that best show this are "I Want to Fucking Break It", "The Enemy", and "Start a War".

Cannibal is the first Static-X album since 1999's Wisconsin Death Trip to feature guitar playing from original guitarist Koichi Fukuda, who left the band in 2000 and rejoined in 2005. (Fukuda is credited as the guitarist on the 2005 album Start a War, but only contributed programming and additional guitars after Tripp Eisen's departure.) Cannibal features an overall more straight forward heavy and aggressive sound when compared to the band's two previous albums. The last two previous albums Shadow Zone and Start a War had a more radio friendly sound featuring much cleaner vocals and a slight toning down of the industrial metal elements. It features more screaming from frontman Wayne Static.

" Janet Maslin of The New York Times instead compared the film to other horror sequels and recently released slasher films of the period rather than to its predecessor: "By the standards of most recent horror films, this—like its predecessor—is a class act." She notes that there "is some variety to the crimes, as there is to the characters, and an audience is more likely to do more screaming at suspenseful moments than at scary ones." Maslin applauded the performance of the cast and Rosenthal and concluded, "That may not be much to ask of a horror film, but it's more than many of them offer." David Pirie's review in Time Out magazine gave Rosenthal's film positive marks, stating, "Rosenthal is no Carpenter, but he makes a fair job of emulating the latter's visual style in this sequel.
