He became a sought-after master of ceremonies for dance marathons (known as "walkathons" at the time), a popular fad in the 1930s. "Three German Officers Crossed the Rhine" is a song with much more ribald set of lyrics, popular on rugby tours but sung to the same tune or to that of "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". It was originally sung in the allied trenches during the First World War. A reworked version known as the “fart song” or as “an old lady of 92” was popular in schools particularly in the UK with lyrics celebrating a flatulent journey including Bristol and Rome. A reworked version of the melody was used in the Israeli songwriter Haim Hefer's song "בחולות" ("Bacholot" or "Bakholot", "In the Sands"), best known for its performance by the singer Yossi Banai.

Bert Coules penned The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes starring Clive Merrison as HolmesThe Further Adventures and Michael Williams/Andrew Sachs as Watson. The episodes of The Further Adventures were based on throwaway references in Doyle's short stories and novels. He also produced original scripts for this series, which was also issued on CD. Coules had previously dramatised the entire Holmes canon for Radio Four. BBC Radio 2 also broadcast in 1999 a more ribald six-episode spoof series featuring Holmes and Watson titled The Newly Discovered Casebook of Sherlock Holmes starring Roy Hudd as Holmes ("the brilliant detective, master of disguise and toffee- nosed ponce"), Chris Emmett as Watson ("contributor to the British Medical Journal, Which Stethescope Magazine and inventor of the self-raising thermometer") and June Whitfield as Mrs. Hudson.

The Disney Junior channel features some archival programming from the 1990s during the overnight hours. Late night talk shows, once exclusive to network television, have begun to be included on cable channels as well in recent years due in part to the success of Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; other late night cable talk shows such as Conan, @midnight, The Colbert Report and Chelsea Lately have also proven successful; however, late night talk/variety programs on cable have a slight advantage over their broadcast counterparts as most of them typically air at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time, at the same time that most local broadcast stations air their late evening newscasts and 35 minutes before the major networks begin their late night network programming. These shows also have the advantage of not being subject to Federal Communications Commission guidelines, though internal network standards (in the case of advertiser-supported cable channels) generally result in these shows not being much more ribald than their network counterparts.
