However, the more juvenile-oriented Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers stories were widely popular science-fiction franchises that in the 1930s were both made into comic strips, radio serials, and film serials. George Pal was a Hungarian who made cute commercials that played as short subjects with feature films in Europe. He later advanced into animated cartoon-like short features that were made using carefully hand-manipulated tiny sculptures instead of drawings; these shorts were called “Puppetoons”, and they became popular in Europe.

Series Four, the final series of the programme, is in many ways the most bizarre. On one hand, the comedy became more sophisticated: the roleplaying references in Episode 1, the parodies of English seaside culture in Episode 3 and the Beatles references in Episode 4 are jokes aimed over the heads of a juvenile audience. Juvenile wood of both types is intrinsically inferior in all functional qualities to mature wood, but juvenile sapwood is the most problematic. The hero is also challenged by an “opposing personality”. The next most preferred, or auxiliary, function is the good parent, which may be counteracted by a shadowy witch/senex complex; similarly the tertiary function (“child”) may be undermined by a more juvenile “trickster”.
