It is a concept album about a man named Urfe who travels through the ruins of a desolate city all the while being led by a mysterious figure who goes by the name of "Pylon". The album, especially the first disc, is mostly a work of atmospheric spoken word being narrated by Leslie Simpson, who is also an actor who starred in several horror movies such as The Descent, Doomsday, and Dog Soldiers. The first disc 'Grief of the Unclean' is an ambient piece made up of atmospheric effects and spoken word. The second disc 'The Great Unwashed' is where the black metal and industrial metal comes into play, while still having some spoken word parts left, though more broken up in between the traditional black metal vocals of Brooke Johnson.

Towards the western margins of the Peak District are a rather more broken series of edges, facing in a variety of directions, from those surrounding the high plateaux of Kinder Scout and Combs Moss to the imposing crags of the Roaches, Hen Cloud and Ramshaw Rocks in the south. A millstone shaped from Millstone Grit quarried in the area has been adopted as the emblem of the Peak District National Park. As an image, the millstone is widely visible on literature but use is made of the objects themselves at many of the entrances to the National Park. These rocks extend northwards through the South Pennines of Lancashire and West Yorkshire and westwards into the Forest of Rossendale and West Pennines and the Forest of Bowland, also in Lancashire.

Upon its release Skeleton Tree received rave reviews from music critics and audiences. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 95, based on 34 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim." In a five-out-of-five-star review for the London Evening Standard, John Aizlewood called Skeleton Tree a "breathtakingly beautiful, grief-strewn record, sometimes direct, sometimes allegorical" and praised both the album's "tender and restrained" music and Cave's "more broken and more uncertain" vocals; Aizlewood said that Skeleton Tree was a "staggering achievement, the one for which Nick Cave will always be remembered." An early first-listen review in the Guardian referred to the album as "unsurprisingly, a very dark record", but said "there is also beauty, empathy and love as it veers between bewildered numbness and heartbreaking profundity".

Underside: similar to that of the male but the ground colour grey with a slight tint of brown, the transverse white strigae much broader, somewhat diffuse; on the forewing the band formed by the medial pair of strigae much more broken than in the male the posterior portion below vein 3 shifted well outwards; on the hindwing the sub-terminal black spot in interspace 2 comparatively very large and prominent.
