Much of the appeal is that "Moggies", as dedicated owners call them, are mostly handmade.

The shop not only sells a huge range of prepared pet foods, including ice cream for dogs, grain-free foods and foods for moggies with a wide variety of conditions including old age, urinary problems and "sensitive digestions".

The hamlet's signpost reads "Lumbfoot, twinned with Lhasa, Tibet" and indicates the number of residents - human, dogs (muttleys) and cats (moggies). Current residents actively maintain a policy of independence.

Like many English festivals, the Ickwell May Day is usually accompanied by Morris dancing -- in this case, the Ickwell Mayers, with their Lord and Lady, and the dirty-faced Moggies. Many other customs associated with the day have been recorded over the years. One, unique to Ickwell, is that of the Old Scholars, a group of alumni of the village school. The Old Scholars dance around the maypole, some with two or even three generations of their offspring.

A cat show is a judged event in which the owners of cats compete to win titles in various cat-registering organizations by entering their cats to be judged after a breed standard. Both pedigreed and non-purebred companion ("moggy") cats are admissible, although the rules differ from organization to organization. Competing cats are compared to the applicable breed standard, and assessed for temperament and apparent health; the owners of those judged to be most ideal awarded a prize. Moggies are judged based on their temperament and healthy appearance.

Refurbished in 1987, with extensive work on the gold leaf in the auditorium, the theatre is particularly notable for its beautiful circular Regency staircase, oval gallery and tower. The theatre has presented several Alan Ayckbourn premieres, including Man of the Moment (1990). Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, An Ideal Husband (1992) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (2004) saw notable revivals, and the Royal Shakespeare Company and others have brought several Shakespeare and classic play revivals to the theatre in recent decades. The 2007 production of Equus attracted considerable press for the nude appearance of 17-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, who was still filming the Harry Potter films.

He is a musician and has performed in local bands such as Mandrake, Sneaky Feet, Brix & Chinese Whispers and he sings and plays bass guitar in the rock group MP4, which is composed of four MPs, Cawsey, Peter Wishart MP, Greg Knight MP and Kevin Brennan MP. He played from 1990–97 in a well known local 60s covers band, The Moggies, the band reformed in 2011 and have established a popular local following once more. In late 1997 he had cancer which he has now overcome. He qualified as a football referee in 2010 and officiates most weekends. Since leaving parliament he has worked for the World Society for the Protection of Animals, firstly on their successful UK campaign to stop a large mega-dairy being built in Nocton, Lincolnshire, he was briefly their Chief of Staff running the Office of the Chief Executive before being promoted to be their Director of Policy & External Affairs in 2012.
