It misdates the earthquake to the year 470. A chronicle attributed to Dionysius I Telmaharoyo (9th century), dates the same earthquake to the year 503, and places it in Mesopotamia. The historian Samuel Anetsi (12th century) dates the earthquake to the year 510. There is also a mention of this earthquake by the chronicler Michael the Syrian (12th century).

Some older histories state that Decorah died in Minnesota at the Blue Earth Indian Agency, but he evidently returned to Wisconsin in the last years of his life. In 1868, the Mauston Star of Mauston, Wisconsin, reported that he died on July 18 while living next to the Lemonweir River near Mauston.The Wisconsin Historical Society has a 1932 reprint of an 1868 obituary from the Mauston Star online. Joshua Percy, captain of the Horatio and son of the Duke of Northumberland, succeeded in shooting the sheep on the crew's last day on the island.

It is believed that they are the oldest known surviving examples of oil painting, possibly predating oil painting in Europe by as much as six centuries. However, the press release picked up by media, clearly misdates the earliest uses of oil paint in Europe, which is fully described in a treatise by Theophilus Presbyter of 1100-1120, and may date back to the Ancient Romans.
