The other story dates further back to when the Voyageurs travelled down Georgian Bay from the French River and met the Indians that lived along the shore of Georgian Bay at the mouth of the Go Home River (Go Home Bay).

A prominent local landlord and businessman in the area in the early 20th century was Brigadier General Ambrose St. Quentin Ricardo, C.M.G., C.B.E., D.S.O., Q.S.A. (1866–1923), a director of Herdman's Ltd.. Born at Gatcombe Park, his family's seat in Gloucestershire in Britain, he had married Elizabeth Alice ('Ella') Herdman in Thyet Myo in Burma (then a part of the Raj) in 1893 and had settled in Sion Mills around 1903. He was largely instrumental in having the Church of the Good Shepherd built in the village, construction beginning in 1909. He and his wife carried out many other improvements to the village, and they were amongst the founders of the Derry Feis. Brig. Gen. Ricardo was buried in the vestibule of the church upon his death in 1923.

Kings Nympton railway station, also known as King's Nympton, is a halt on the Tarka Line in North Devon, serving the civil parishes of Chulmleigh, Burrington and King's Nympton. Despite its name, Kings Nympton railway station is around 2½ miles (4 km) from King's Nympton—the station is located at Fortescue Cross, a road junction between the A377 and B3226 in the civil parish of Chulmleigh, roughly equidistant between the hamlets of Head Bridge and Colleton Mills around a mile (1.6 km) to the north and south. The station is operated by GWR, who run six northbound trains a day from Kings Nympton to , and five southbound trains a day to via . The North Devon Railway opened Kings Nympton station as South Molton Road, referring to the B3226, in summer 1854.

Kings Nympton station is over a mile away from any named settlement; the closest hamlets are Head Bridge and Colleton Mills, around a mile (1.6 km) to the north and south respectively along the A377. The station serves the civil parishes of Chulmleigh, Burrington and King's Nympton, the villages of which are situated to the south-east, west and north-east respectively. By road, the station is approximately 2½ miles (4 km) from Chulmleigh via the A377 and the unnamed Chulmleigh–Colleton Mill road, 2½ miles (4 km) from Burrington via the A377 and Twitchen Lane, and 2½ miles (4 km) from King's Nympton via the B3226 and Kingsnympton Road. It is also close to Newnham, Elstone and Cadbury Barton, all of which are in the civil parish of Chulmleigh.

The NLB's opportunity came when the Full-Fashioned Hosiery Workers Union launched an organizing drive in the summer of 1933 in the silk stocking mills around Reading, Pennsylvania. The employers refused to recognize the union, and 10,000 workers went on strike. On August 10, 1933, the NLB mediated a settlement. Known as the "Reading Formula," the settlement consisted of four parts: (1) That the union call off the strike; (2) That all employees be rehired immediately, without retaliation; (3) That the NLB hold elections in which the workers would vote by secret ballot for their own representatives, and that both parties would negotiate a collective bargaining agreement covering wages, hours and working conditions; and (4) That in the event of any disagreement on any matter, the parties would submit the dispute to the NLB for binding arbitration.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Spain was still mostly rural; modern industry existed only in the textile mills around Barcelona in Catalonia and in the metallurgical plants of the Basque provinces. The loss of Cuba and the Philippines benefited the Peninsula by causing capital to return and to be invested in updated domestic industries. But even with the stimulus of World War I, only in Catalonia and in two Basque provinces (Biscay and Guipuscoa) did the value of manufacturing output in 1920 exceed that of agricultural production. Agricultural productivity was generally low compared with that of other West European countries because of a number of deficiencies: backward technology, lack of large irrigation projects, inadequate rural credit facilities, outmoded landtenure practices, as well as the age old problems of difficult terrain, unreliable climate, isolation and difficult transportation in the rugged interior.
