The region can claim the world's first factory, Sir Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill. Additionally, the world's oldest working factory can also be found in the area, producing textiles at Lea Bridge, owned by John Smedley. Both sites are part of the region's only World Heritage Site, the Derwent Valley Mills. An opportunist employee of the Derbyshire textile factories, Samuel Slater of Belper saw his chance and (illegally) eloped in 1789 to Rhode Island in the US after memorising the layout of the textile machinery while working at Jedediah Strutt's Milford Mill.

Memoni is the mother tongue of Kathiawar and Sindhi Memons, most of them who are exclusively Muslims. Fearing for his life but clever and greedy, the Professor translates the map to reveal a treasure is on the island of Hispaniola but the Professor insures his safety by destroying the map and memorising the contents.

In the BBC television series Sherlock, which premiered in mid 2010, the title character uses mind palaces to remember various things throughout the show.

Careful measures were taken to shield the party and its supporters from British intelligence, which included the measure of memorising over a thousand names of the subscribers so that no incriminating evidence could fall into the hands of the British government. A graduate in Philosophy and Chinese at the Université Paris VIII - Vincennes, he departed for China in 1973, where he studied Philosophy and Chinese at the Beijing Languages Institute and Peking University from 1973 to 1975. Upon his return to France, he set about building the discipline of the teaching of Chinese language. He is particularly known for his pedagogical innovation of the 1980s when he conceived methods to teach Chinese language in primary education which included colour-coding Chinese characters to assist memorising of the four tones in Standard Mandarin (first tone: blue; second tone: yellow; third tone: black; fourth tone: red). Dorrigo Evans has found fame and public recognition as a war veteran in old age, but inwardly he is plagued by his own shortcomings and considers his numerous accolades to be a “failure of perception on the part of others”. Dorrigo meets Amy by chance in an Adelaide bookstore and he finds that "her body was a poem beyond memorising".

The contestants travel to two different rooms around the castle in search of the ectoplasm, but are placed into games by Lord MacAbre. There are at least three different games per episodes, including a memory game in which the contestants must match sound effects to their origins and then play them in a certain order; and a game where they have to play a bowling game of sorts involving knocking down skeletons using large rubber balls and mops to guide the balls. An example of this would be that students can easily become high achievers in school by memorising concepts and taking notes religiously, yet do not truly understand the underlying reasonings behind each concept, and thus would not understand the usefulness and applications outside the education system. The proposal to change the lyrics was also criticized by former Deputy Prime Minister S. Rajaratnam, who felt that the Malay lyrics of the anthem were so simple that "anyone over the age of five, unless mentally retarded, had no difficulty singing the anthem. In Star Trek: The Next Generation, a Sherlock Holmes mystery was one of the programmes on the Enterprise-D's holodeck. In the episode Elementary, Dear Data, Data, after memorising all of the Sherlock Holmes books, is challenged to use deduction in an original mystery created by Dr. Pulaski. However, the programme goes awry when Geordi La Forge, in response to Pulaski's challenge, asks the computer to create an adversary capable of defeating Data, resulting in the hologram of Professor Moriarty (played by Daniel Davis) gaining full sentience, kidnapping Dr. Pulaski and taking over the ship's computer. In a later episode, Ship in a Bottle, the holodeck Moriarty again takes control of the ship, insisting that a way be found for him to experience life beyond the confines of the holodeck, until the crew manage to trap him in a permanent simulation.

BFC's 500th concert performance, on Good Friday 2015, was a semi-staged "in the round" performance of Bach's St. John Passion at the Brighton Dome, with the Chorus singing the whole work from memory. In 2015, as part of the celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta, BFC commissioned a work from Morgan Pochin on the theme of Liberty. The resulting work "Invictus – Cantata for Liberty" for orchestra, adult choir, youth choir and narrators was premiered at the Brighton Dome in June, and saw BFC join forces with the City of London Sinfonia, Brighton Festival Youth Choir and the Brighton and Hove Community Youth Choir, conducted by James Morgan. In the 2016 Brighton Festival, the Chorus performed Elgar's Dream of Gerontius "off book", memorising the whole piece and performing it without scores.

Plaque on bench memorising general in former barracks of Cavalry Training Center in Grudziądz Józef Smoleński (1894 - 1978) was a soldier of Polish Legions in World War I and General brygady of the Polish Army. He fought in World War I, Polish–Soviet War and World War II, serving in the military forces from 1914 until 1945. Born on September 18, 1894 in the village of Gostkowo, Russian-controlled Congress Poland, Smoleński studied at the University of Liege, Belgium, and at Warsaw University of Life Sciences, where he joined the Riflemen's Association and moved from Congress Poland to Austrian Galicia. On August 6, 1914, Smoleński marched from Kraków towards Russian Poland, as a soldier of 2nd Platoon, First Cadre Company. He then served in 1st Uhlan Regiment of Władysław Belina-Prażmowski. After the Oath crisis, he was interned by the Germans in Szczypiorno, to be released in November 1918.

He had been promoted to vice-admiral of the red on 4 February 1755. In 1756 the Cuban governor extended an official invitation to him to pay a visit to Havana, the strongest naval and military Spanish base in the Caribbean and the Americas. The offer was accepted with pleasure, and he spent much of his time memorising the details of Havana’s defences. Later he had drawn up plans for the capture of “The Havannah” which he submitted to Mr Pitt, probably the same which he laid before the cabinet at the time of his resignation as Prime Minister. By 1761 he had shown his plans to the Duke of Cumberland who championed the idea and wrote to the military commander of the expedition, the earl of Albermarle “..I dread the loss of one single day at present and that not the less for Knowles’ company, who is here croaking every day at dinner. Any bystander would think me the projector and fitter out of the expedition…” On 13 August 1762 Havana formally surrendered.

One of the Moroccan Arabic names for both Atropa baetica and A. belladonna is ḥabb el-fahm meaning 'seed of intelligence/understanding'. One author) maintains this to be due to a confusion (due to a similarity between certain Moroccan names of the plants in question) with Anacardium occidentale L., but this is belied by an ethnobotanical note on A. baetica by the estimable Prof. Font i Quer, who recorded a practice whereby a chicken was fed with Atropa berries until its flesh was judged to be sufficiently saturated with the plant's poisons (or metabolites thereof?) The chicken was then killed and its meat eaten by a person seeking (as the first author has it) to 'sharpen the faculties of the mind'. For some days the eater of the drugged chicken would show signs of belladonna poisoning, but, when they recovered from this intoxication, would find their faculty of memory greatly enhanced in clarity and retentiveness – an effect often sought as an aid to the memorising of passages from the Quran and to cramming (education) for examinations.
