Until 2010, Twitter (launched in July 2006) did not have a policy on handling deceased user accounts, and simply deleted timelines of deceased users. The Keokuk National Cemetery was established as a final resting place for bodies from five local U.S. Army hospitals in Keokuk. It holds over 600 Union soldiers, and 8 Confederate prisoners of war. Following the war, a number of veterans organizations, and in particular the Grand Army of the Republic, played a prominent role in providing social functions, financial support, and memorialization of the former soldiers. The G.A.R. provided the funds and impetus for the construction of the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown and other similar homes and hospitals, as well as orphanages.

In 1967, Major Marcus Reno was re-interred in the cemetery with honors, including an eleven-gun salute. Ellen Call Long (1825-1905) was the daughter of Florida territorial governor Richard Keith Call and a member of the influential Call-Walker political family of Florida. She acquired The Grove from her father in 1851 and held it until 1903. She received distinction after the Civil War for her efforts in historic preservation, history, memorialization, forestry, silkworm cultivation, and the promotion of Florida. She was the author of Florida Breezes, a semi-fictional account of antebellum life primarily set in Middle Florida which is widely regarded as one of the best primary source accounts of the planter class lifestyle in Florida.

The cenotaph was originally constructed in 1968, and dedicated at that time to soldiers who had lost their lives in World War I, World War II and the Korean War. It was designed by Walter Gregory and constructed under the supervision of Carl Taylor, funded by the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and its Ladies' Auxiliary. The exhumations at Patio 29 led to two documentaries: Patio 29: Histories of Silence, and Fernando ha vuelto, which told the story of recovering Fernando Olivares Mori's body from the plot, his burial, and an interview with his wife after the DNA-based doubts were posited. In a review of Patio 29: Tras la Cruz de Fierro, Katrien Klep placed the book alongside an international human rights trend towards "memorialization", Southern Cone writings about "monuments, memorials, and lugares de memoria (memory locales)", and interest in reconciling their divided societies. In keeping with this symbolism, Patio 29 became part of the Bachelet government's "symbolic reparation" program.

Bobbie's demonstration of loyalty is celebrated during Silverton's annual children's pet parade that serves as a reminder of the special place animals and pets have in people's lives. The event was started several years after Bobbie's death and the first parade was led by his son, Pal. A outdoor painting featuring Bobbie's story is part of a series of murals that decorate the walls of businesses in Silverton. Memory jugs are closely related to the broken-china mosaic form known as trencadís that began to appear in the early 20th century. Most of the existing memory jugs date back no further than the early 20th century, and the makers of most are unknown. Scholars disagree about the origins of memory jugs, with some holding that they were intended as personal memorials, some that they were intended as grave markers, and some that they originated as a hobby unconnected with memorialization. Janet Jacobs was awarded the 2017 Outstanding Book Award from the American Sociological Association Section on Peace, War and Social Conflict for her book The Holocaust Across Generations: Trauma and its Inheritance Among Descendants of Survivors. In 2016 Janet Jacobs presented a lecture to the International Conference on Women and War in Yerevan, Armenia entitled "Gender and the Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma: Family Narratives and the Construction of Identity Among Descendants of the Holocaust". Jacobs also presented a lecture entitled "Gender and Holocaust Memorialization" at the Conference in Jewish and Gender Studies in honor of Debra Kaufman at Northeastern University in 2012. In 2011 Jacobs presented the Stanley L. Saxton Address "Gender and Genocide: Collective Memory and Holocaust Memorials" at the University of Dayton.

It was a collaboration with John Stone and Lorene Cary under the auspices of the Fairmont Park Art Association Living in a Spirit House is nine by nine feet, fully furnished room/installation created in 1993. It contains original artifacts from artists home accompanied by reproduced period fabrics and wallpapers, produced at the Fabric Workshop, exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Acknowledgement, Enlightenment, and Memorialization, curated by Mary Jane Jacob, installed as triptych during Spoleto festival. This installation served the Wilmot Frasier Elementary School and succeeded in providing food for the schoolchildren, thereby improving test scores, which helped to keep the school open for a number of years. Garden also functioned as an outdoor classroom utilized for lesions in English science and mathematics.

As new media technologies such as radio and television were created, the obituary adapted to best reflect capabilities available in the new communication media. Authors Brian Carroll and Katie Landry have argued that the appearance of online mourning reflects a logical progress of mourning via social media networks through use of new media. Changes to the obituary as it adapts over media include an exponential increase in information about the deceased, and the content reaching a wider geographic audience. The occurrence of online mourning presents a new paradigm in the memorialization process by providing interactive, sometimes competitive documents for mourners. Studies of Facebook and Myspace indicate that while the majority of living users visit memorialized profile accounts immediately after learning of an individual’s death, visitation often continues long after, albeit less frequently.

The Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO) (Filipino: Tanggapan para sa Kapakanan ng mga Beteranong Pilipino) is the Philippine agency for Filipino war veterans. Under the Department of National Defense, PVAO serves to fulfill a national commitment as embodied in Section 7, Article XVI of the 1987 Philippine Constitution: “The State shall provide immediate and adequate care, benefits and other forms of assistance to war veterans and veterans of military campaigns, their surviving spouses and orphans. Funds shall be provided therefor and due consideration shall be given them in the disposition of agricultural lands of the public domain and, in appropriate cases, in the utilization of natural resources.” PVAO's core functions include the administration of veteran’s pension and benefits, memorialization of veterans’ heroic deeds, and promotion of policies and management of services for veterans’ affairs and welfare.

Ashley Miller said that the University of Washington already had many monuments to "rich, white men"; she claimed to have partial Sioux ancestry.

Araujo's work explores the public memory of slavery in the Atlantic world. She authored many books and articles on history and memory of slavery, including Public Memory of Slavery: Victims and Perpetrators in the Atlantic World (2010), Shadows of the Slave Past: Memory, Slavery, and Heritage (2014) and Reparations for Slavery and the Slave Trade: A Transnational and Comparative History (2017). Public Memory of Slavery, her first book in English studies the historical connections between Bahia in Brazil and the Kingdom of Dahomey in modern Benin, during the era of the Atlantic slave trade and how in these two areas social actors are engaging in remembering and commemorating the slave past to forge particular identities through the construction of monuments, memorials, and museums. In her second book she continued to focus on the processes of memorialization of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade in the Americas, with a particular emphasis on Brazil and the United States.

For the next 30 years from 1890 to 1931, Decoration would be Canada's popular national memorial day, the first remembrance day, commemorated on the weekend nearest to June 2 and acknowledging Canadian dead in the Battle of Ridgeway, the Northwest Rebellion (1885), the South African War (1899–1902), and the Great War (1914–1918). In 1931 the Remembrance Day Act established November 11, Armistice Day, as Canada's national official memorial day. At the same time the Remembrance Day Act expelled the casualties of Ridgeway and the Northwest Rebellion from national memorialization, fixing Remembrance Day to Canadian casualties overseas starting from the South African War. The Battle of Ridgeway was Canada's first modern battle, the first fought exclusively by Canadian troops and led on the battlefield entirely by Canadian officers, the battle in which Canada's current modern military sustained its first nine killed in action, and the last battle fought within the present-day boundaries of Ontario against a foreign invasion.
